I built a mini ITX setup: - ASRock Fatal1ty B450 Gaming-ITX/ac - AMD Ryzen 2700x w/ stock cooler - Zotac GTX 1070 mini - Fractal Core 500 case And then I had bought this Corsair LPX 32GB DRAM 3000MHz C15 Memory Kit (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B014UYPEXE) which was $320. After, i found this Ballistix Sport LT 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR4 3000 MT/s (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07HPBV5RT) on for $199, which I absolutely had to buy on impulse. I originally bought the vengeance because I was told "they work with everything", and indeed my system is running fine. But $120 difference on the RAM would be nice to put that money towards something else! I don't see the latency timings for the ballistix, but I also don't really understand them either. They are both 3000Mhz and I would hope/assume the ballistix would also run at that speed. Is there anything I should be considering between these two options? Is it a no brainer to save $120 and return my corsair vengeance, or stick with what I already have and instead just return the ballistix (hasn't been delivered yet...) **Edit** looks like the ballistix is: - Specs: DDR4 PC4-24000 • 16-18-18 And the Vengeance is: - Tested Latency 15-17-17-35
  2. Just got in 2x Noctua NF-A14 fans and installed them at the top of my Core 500 as intake fans. It did seem to drop the temps a degree or two but when rendering a video, it dropped my CPU temp more like 5-8c, which is much nicer to see (not pictured). I still find it super weird about the idle fluctuations, though. It's causing a constant spin-up and slow-down of the fans which is just so damn noticeable and annoying. I altered the AMD Ryzen power plan to alter the min processor state to 50% - I think it might have be 80% by default... Nothing I can do about it? This is the 2700x?
  3. Pretty fresh install of windows 10, this is off a fresh boot (initial temps as things get started up). Then I killed some services and background apps and waited. Then the next jump was me just moving around the windows, even before eventually opening photoshop (who know flipping tabs in resource monitor or whatever could be so intensive!) But the big part is that stretch of idle time where it just constantly jumps up and down in temps. Doesn't seem right?   4. I liked the idea of a small case, but it's something to consider. I've also heard that the smaller cases, when you add the air cooling, can actually be more efficient because the amount of air to circulate is less so i.e. it takes less time to replace all air in the case with fresh air?
  5. Ah, doh.. that makes sense for the cooler, haha. I ended up placing an order for 2x Noctua NF-A14's. I'll see how things change with them installed before I consider swapping out the cooler...
  6. How would that work - especially the rear fan - as intake when the CPU right below it is acting as exhaust blowing straight up?
  7. Just the standard "Silent Series R3 140mm fan". I've heard mixed messaging about adding 1 or even 2 fans to the top. One of the main things I wonder right now is how much air is being sucked in - and from where... PSU I believe sucks+blows out so that's sort of a clsoed system. Top should be exhausting air, so only other place is beside the GPU which either the GPU will spit out the air, or if they aren't running, then ambient outside air MIGHT get sucked in?
  8. Stock rear chassis fan - so I believe it's 140mm exhaust? Stock cooler fan blowing up through top of case (it's very close to rear fan, not sure whether most of the CPU exhaust is out back or top) PSU intake on bottom, exaust on that side port Zotac GTX 1070 dual fans with the grill in front of it but the fans are least active so far.

I've got a new build with Fractal Core 500 case ASrock B450 Gaming ITX motherboard Ryzen 2700x CPU w/ stock cooler I was investigating the sort of obnoxious fan noise from the CPU which would constantly spike up RPM and then drop it after a few seconds, which is annoying since it's not gradual or more constant/long-lived. Anyway - I removed the case piece (so open sides+top) and had the computer sitting on my desk. On idle the CPU temp was about 31c. Rendering a video in Davinci Resolve spiked the CPU to 74.25. I **THINK** this is totally fine/reasonable? When I put the case back on, I couldn't get idle temps to drop below 38c and rendering same video gave me just under 80c - so basically +7 (or more) degrees across the board. I do a bunch of work in Lightroom, Photoshop, and DaVinci Resolve. So I will have a range of short lived intensive tasks (merging, applying complex adjustments, etc.) but also long-lived ones (exporting bulk files, rendering video, etc.) Anything I can do to improve cooling/airflow that ISN'T watercooling? I thought this slightly-larger Core 500 case with good reviews would have good airflow cooling support for me...
  10. So I just did a test. - Fresh boot (but stuff loaded/opened and whatnot), waited for a bit of idle where the CPU temp was reported as 30-31c. - Then I rendered my video clip in davinci resolve. Took just shy of 6 minutes. - Looks like the Tdie maxed at 74.25c whereas the Tctl was 84.25 (what's the difference?) - Case was open, so open airflow on sides+top - I believe I had also changed BIOS for CPU fan to Standard (was on quiet before) - Task manager was showing consistent 95-100% CPU usage at just shy of 4Ghz (it's not overclocked, but can't it go up to 4.5 on stock or something?) Would really appreciate clarification that these temps are fine - I think they are? Indicates the CPU+cooler is indeed working acceptably. Fan is definitely noisy - maybe just a trait of the stock cooler? I'm not against a better/quieter cooler though if I can delay that purchase and deal with it later... would probably prefer that If above is indeed fine, and I put case back on and run into temp problems, then it's likely a case problem which I'd need to improve on or consider replacing? It does have space for 1 or 2 (120mm i think?) fans up top. I'm not really interested in watercooling... **EDIT:** So I just turned off computer, put case back on and booted up. I can't really get the temp to drop below 38c. It'll get down there, then shoot back up to about 44 on a bit of an endless loop. 7+ degrees idle difference by having the case attached? eek I did do the same video render and it peaked at about 79.5, so basically that same 7+ degree gap...
  11. Hmm would throw noctua be much different than the stock wraith cooler? I thought I read somewhere that the CPU shouldn't go above 80c or something? I realize I'm doing rather intensive tasks but I'm starting to wonder if there is still a potential problem with the paste or cooler or something. It is an itx case but I tried to maximize airflow with open top grill (should I consider putting fan or fans there?) And case it elevated off ground. First AMD and ITX build but my old xps 8500 with an i7-3770 and gtx 1060 gb noise profile didn't even come close to comparing yo this... The core 500 has CPU cooler height support of 170mm

I've got a new computer build and the core components are: - Ryzen 2700x w/ stock cooler - ASRock B450 Gaming-ITX/ac motherboard - Fractal design core 500 case Everything seems to run fine, I've tried different fan modes in the bios, but it just seems nothing really has an affect on the noise constantly spinning up when doing ANYTHING intensive. For example, I'll load a photo into photoshop and select an area, do a content-aware fill. IMMEDIATELY the fan will speed up and get super loud. But this only happens for a few seconds, then it goes lower RPM and quieter again. So this happens over and over any time I perform some CPU operation. It becomes super noticeable and annoying as it's constantly ramping up and down. Here is attached graph where at the end, I was content-aware filling a space. Waiting for fans to quiet again, wait approx 5 seconds, and do it again. I did it 4 times with the last time CPU jumping up to 77. Is it normal for the CPU to spike like this? The fan? I also more recently tested rendering a video i had in Davinci Resolve and the CPU was hitting 93-94c... and of course the fan was louddd Something wrong with fan setting? Sensor? CPU cooler? CPU paste? Help please!
  13. Doh, here I was thinking I was being smart sticking to just the core components before adding more. Put in video card and got to the BIOS screen. Will plug in keyboard+mouse and begin installing windows. Thanks!

I just completed a new build: - Fractal Core 500 case - AMD 2700x with stock cooler - Asrock B450 Gaming-ITX motherboard - EVGA Supernova 650W G3 - Corsair LPX 32GB DRAM 3000MHz C15 Memory Kit - Have not installed my 1070 video card yet I installed all components, but no keyboard or mouse attached yet. Power supply has the mobo connector and the 4+4 CPU connector. No drives installed yet. When I hit the power button, it turns white, the case fan starts spinning, as does the CPU (along with lighting up). I don't believe the case/mobo has any built-in speaker to indicate an issue? Either way, it's silent... just keeps spinning but nothing showing on display. I tried HDMI and displayport. Connecting the HDMI cable to my laptop, I get display just fine. I would expect the screen to flash on for the BIOS, then eventually get no drive error or no keyboard/mouse error, but instead I'm getting absolutely nothing. No idea where to even begin with the troubleshooting. Help greatly appreciated!
  15. Yeah I do keep seeing the complaints about the side/top panel but I expect this to be a 1-2 time job... not planning to open and work with the computer regularly. Also not planning to transport it regularly, but do want it to be "small enough" that if I have to bring it with me i.e. during a move its not this huge tower. Hence ITX Any experience with it vs the node 304? I'm not completely clear why the node is much more expensive
  16. Looking for an ITX case, I seem to keep coming back to fractal design. Yes, I want small but I don't want the absolute smallest footprint that will give me issues with component capability. The core 500 SEEMS like a newer version, but how do I even go about picking one over the other? I was originally leaning towards the node 304 just because it's not cube and is slightly smaller, but it's more expensive and harder for me to buy here in Canada. The core 500 seems like a compelling alternative. Any reason to NOT pick the core 500 over the node 304?

Which brings me back to my initial concern... a) I'd like to have the faster speed ram b) I certainly don't want to pay a premium for faster ram that won't run at the speed

  19. Is this basically the exact same then, or more different than just the 3000 vs 3200? I'm about to buy this: ASRock - B450 GAMING-ITX/AC Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard and looking for 2x16GB (32GB) RAM for it, but having quite the difficult time trying to find RAM that will be compatible. The ASRock QVL list is small and even smaller for the larger sticks. I check something like gskill and their QVL is almost exclusively intel boards. I've been told to look for 3000+ ram for a ryzen 2700x, but I have absolutely no clue if the RAM I get will run at that speed or something far lower (or not even run at all...). Trying to find youtube and other reviews for their setups, but not having much luck in terms of coverage of which ram to go with.
  22. I've got an almost-complete build on PC Part Picker but at least my thinking was to not buy everything all at the exact time, and maybe spread over the next week(s) given the sales. Some parts already have (and had - expired) MIRs, but they also sometimes have short windows for mailing in. I worry about having to cut out UPC code to mail in and negating any ability to do a store refund/exchange if there are any problems. Since I don't have all components, I wouldn't exactly be able to hook everything up to make sure it's all working. Also, I can't even remember the last time I had to deal with a MIR. I know in the past, they were pretty much hit or miss if you'd even get the money. Is that still the case? Should I just suck it up and try to order everything at once? Should I ignore any MIR discounts?
  23. I'm still trying to understand what the difference is between them all. Is it just down to quality of the fans/components? Going to be doing zero gaming, but will be doing photo + video editing
