  1. I just did the testing, seems quite odd though For testing i used Cinebench R15, task manager in the foreground, same processes in background with HT disabled i got: 58.9FPS in OpenGL (98% Ref. match) although the GPU wasn't having any trouble and i think it would have been able to pump out at least double FPS (50% utilization on it) 859CB points in multi threaded 82CB in single threaded MP Radio: 10.49 with HT enabled i got: 64.23 FPS for OpenGL (still 98% ref. match) 1104CB points in multi threaded 81CB points in single threaded MP Radio : 13.56 It seems odd, HT makes the OS/programs see one core as 2 cores, that could also mean the performance is halved since one core would execute instructions for 2. Seems like that's all the performance i can milk from these old Xeons though :)) Maybe i should upgrade to a Xeon X5680. According to Dell, it's the best Xeon this motherboard supports. the're a bit expensive for a 10 year old CPU though especially when you want 2 of them
  2. Hello! I recently made a gaming rig from an old Dell PowerEdge T610 server that has 24GB of DDR3 ECC RAM, dual Intel Xeon E5645 2.4GHz 6 core 12 threads CPU and some other stuff, plus a Radeon Rx570 4GB GPU I slapped inside (via a PCIe x8 slot, some of you may know that the T610 doesn't have any x16 slot) Now, my question is, I have 12 physical cores, do I need hyperthreading? I mean 12 cores are enough for games, cad, physics simulations I do and some other stuff, like coding. Would disabling hyperthreading improve my single threaded performance? I do expect losing some points in multi threaded workloads, am I wrong? Going from 24 threads to 12. Like I see it suffer especially in games from poor single threaded performance, since not all games I have are really multi threaded Thank you for any advice on improving performance a bit. P.S. I can't overclock anything.
  3. I agree that it's inefficient, but it works, i'm not a professional gamer or something, to my eyes and brain it seems fine. From what i've tested, the GPU is connected to CPU0 where most games run, so no NUMA node usage for that, i would add more latency if the game runs on a different CPU then what the GPU is connected to, but, most likely it wouldn't be noticeable to me.
  4. Hello! Because of happiness i want to share my experience getting together a gaming rig. I had a Dell PowerEdge T610 server that i had it up for sale, and then it struck me, i had a nVidia Quadro NVS310, i wanted to put it into the server and see if it works, after cutting a random PCIe X8 slot to accept the x16 card, it worked, although i had no video output before getting to the OS Boot stage. 3 days ago, i tried it again, to see if i can get an output, before though i got into bios and randomly turned off it's integrated Matrox GPU, aand eureka! it worked so out of happiness i got out and bought a R9 270X Windforce 2GB card, jerry rigged some Molex to PCIe power adapters and it worked... sort of, i got a respectable 11FPS 1080p ultra in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, i first assumed the CPU's were the problem, but when i checked with task manager, not at all, the card was the bottleneck, it couldn't run even Distance, witch is a very light game, so, i returned the R9 270X and got myself a RX 570 Pulse, 4GB, and just like magic from 11FPS 1080p Ultra in SOTTR, i got 47FPS sustained, up to 60 and down to 35. i am still shocked that a 10 year old platform still holds up today. I kept testing it, and most things i threw at it it handled it with ease, 1080p 60FPS, most intensive games i have take that down to 33, but never below. Full specs: 2x Intel Xeon E5645 2.4GHz (boost up to 2.7GHz) 6-core 12-threads (for a grand total of 12 cores and 24 threads) 24GB DDR3 ECC 1366MHz RAM Sapphire Pulse - AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB VRAM Sound Blaster Audigy 5 Dell PERC H700 RAID card 1x 250GB and 1x 640GB HDD's (had them thrown around the house, after putting all of it's previous HDD's in my new NAS. can't wait to upgrade to a SSD for the boot drive and 1x 570W PSU (80+ Gold), the second one i have i keep it as a spare. I didn't attach any pics since it looks just like a T610 on the outside, and just has some extra cards on the inside. To be honest, i would have loved it to have a sexy case that has silent fans (sounds like a jet engine right now) and a glass panel on the side door, hell, even some RGB, but, i'm already asking too much from my budget. Anyone knows a program that would let me control it's fans? i think it's controlled by the iDRAC card, and speed fan can't change their speed, it works only on the GPU fan. Thanks for reading and for the eventual advices! Have a great day everyone!
  5. I do run a torrent server, forgot to mention it, i use qbittorrent for it's web interface, unfortunally it doesn't have any slot for a GPU although it's a tower server, shares the same motherboard with Dell PE R610 (the 1U rackable server) As for quake, not a fan, i tried setting up a minecraft server, but MC it's not multithread, and my single core performance isn't great
  6. Hello! I bought in march an ASUS GL503VD laptop (i7 7th gen 7700HQ 4 core@ 2.8GHz; 8GB DDR4 memory, 1TB Segate SSHD; 128GB Samsung NVMexpress SSD (not sure the exact model, it's not some kind of EVO and desktop nVidia GTX1050 4GB GPU) It runs like a dream in all games that i throw at it, but there are some strange things going on with it, back in may i discoverd that my SSHD had a couple of bad sectors, still was acceptable but i decided to buy an SSD to make the OS run faster (the laptop didn't came with one) so i got an ADATA 128GB SSD back in july, some kind of XPG 2000 of some sort, i really don;t remember. after 4 months it got nuked by something, and i didn;t run more then the OS and some apps on it, just intended usage. so i got the upwards mentioned Samsung SSD, this one is working fine, although, sometimes when i power the laptop on, it simply lags (yes, lags) at the bootup screen, when those dots run in cirlce, windows 10 style, it has lie 2 FPS and hangs like that for ever, i have to power off and on again, sometimes when i rename stuff it hangs after i press enter for a while, before making the effective file rename. Any ideea why is this happening?
  7. Hello, I own a Dell PowerEdge T610 Server (24GB DDR3 ECC Reg RAM; 2x Intel Xeon E5645 6Core@2.4GHz; PERC H700 storage controller), and i was wondering what can i do with it; at the moment it runs Active Directory handling a few PC's for my business, a file server, torrent server, plex server and a virtual machine running as a NVR for my CCTV, and 2 web servers (1 for my UPS and Genset monitoring and 1 is not used) i do have quite a bit of available resources left, so any ideas what i could use that for? thanks in advance and sorry if i am not in the right topic.
