Side note - if you import all the photos into iPhoto, that has facial recognition. Don't know how good it is though. You can then find out from iPhoto the file name for that particular photo.

My Dad keeps insisting that I get Norton for my gaming PC. Even though I have already explained to him that I have Avast and that it's better even though it's free. Of course, he thinks all free stuff is a virus in itself so eventually I said that it was a free trial and that I now have the paid version (even though I don't). Sigh.

Another one of my favourites is when I built my PC. After explaining that I did a lot of research about it and everything my parents were cool with it. Until Mum came in and saw me picking up the motherboard and freaked out. I don't know why, she just seemed surprised that I 'even had to buy the motherboard'. I don't know what she was thinking though, like I'd get a motherboard for free or something? I think maybe she thought I was buying some sort of barebones PC with motherboard, CPU and stuff already installed and then doing some "gaming modifications" with a graphics card and stuff. Still, it was kinda funny. "You had to buy a motherboard?" is a quote I'll never forget.

I don't think people tend to hate on Apple so much, they hate more on the people who blindly follow Apple and the fact that Apple encourages this behaviour. Well that's how I see it anyway.

To be honest with the Microsoft stuff it's not so bad. I really like Microsoft's software and as long as I can continue to get it free or at low cost (legally - through school and next year Uni) I will continue to use it. However I find it's very easy to switch to other stuff, for example LibreOffice (which I use on my Gaming PC) or Google Docs/Sheets etc (which I use in conjunction with Microsoft Office on my MacBook for when I need to access stuff on multiple devices). Both LibreOffice and Google Apps use Microsoft's style and have similar or the same features, shortcuts etc. (to the point where I think I can safely refer to them collectively as "Microsoft clones" from now on) so I haven't really needed to learn anything. Maybe with some people who don't pick up tech stuff as intuitively it would be a little harder, but certainly far from impossible.

However, when it comes to Apple stuff, it's night and day. We have to use MacBooks for school, so as a result we all have the iWork suite (although we were also given Office for Mac, due to familiarity etc.). Don't get me wrong - iWork's "Microsoft Equivalents" are actually really good too - I have a number of actual "techie" friends who are into Windows, PC Gaming etc. (two custom their PCs, one of them even has their MacBook dual booted with Linux... so you get the drill) who have switched to Pages/Keynote etc. and basically think along the lines of "Apple for my school stuff, Microsoft for my gaming stuff". I actually find my MacBook a lot more pleasant for doing school work too, but man, I tried switching to Pages and it's sooooo different. Keynote isn't so bad, but I decided I was wasting too much time in trying to switch to Pages so I've gone to Microsoft + "clones". But I feel for anyone already on Pages who is forced to switch to Microsoft or a "clone", they won't be able to.

I find this to be really disappointing, and I don't think I really need to explain why. The article title pretty much says it all.

A few key quotes from the article:

Will LTT still be getting an AMD sample? Linus has said a lot of negative things about AMD lately.

I also wonder what this could mean about the Fury X. We've seen some leaked benchmarks that have seen it performing well agaist the 980Ti and Titan X, but if AMD are worried about people who have been making negative comments about AMD receiving a card - could it mean it doesn't actually perform that well? I find that hard to believe, but then again I find the article itself hard to believe.

This article contains a couple of interesting pieces of information. Firstly, there's this:

They then move on to comment on the KitGuru situation, talk about journalistic freedom and so on, and say that while they knew they'd at least not be getting a sample in the first one, it is apparent they probably won't be recieving a Fury X at all.

They reached out to Christine Brown (AMD's Senior Manager of EMEA Communications, as mentioned previously) and recieved the following response:

They also reachded out to Corporate VP and General Manager of EMEA, Darren Grasby, and got a very similar response:

All of this "reducing numbers" is a little worrying for me, it seems like the sign of general cost cutting, which in turn could be the sign of a struggling company.

    VMaxMuffin got a reaction from Speakerator in 29 inch 1440p 21:9 ?
As far as I know, no 29" 21:9 monitors are 1080p. This is because the height of a 29" 21:9 monitor is about the same as a 23" 16:9 monitor. This means that the pixel density of a 1080p 29" 21:9 monitor would be about the same as your current 1080p 23" 16:9 monitor. Since we don't get 1440p screens in 23" or 24" size, it also makes sense that we don't get 1440p screens in the 29" ultrawide size.

Basically, a 29" 1080p ultrawide would still be an upgrade from your current monitor - in terms of more horizontal real estate - however I think you probably would be better served by a 27" 1440p.

I got a solution hold on
    Use fishing line-
You'll need like 6-9 pound clear line, a swivel, and a snap (or just two snaps)
tie a very short length of line to the op of the case, and a put a swivel (or second snap) on that line, just so that it's out of sight.
Tie snap to longer length of line, and run it down to the gpu
Unscrew a screw from the back of the card slightly, loop some fishing line to it, re-tighten it. Make sure to pull the line nice and tight- if you have trouble, maybe attach the short length last then.
This fishing line will hold the card, be detachable via the snap, and be very low key/hard to see.

    ^Swivel snap combo

This can all be accomplished for cheap via a trip down to the local bait and tackle.

I don't know why people are even bringing up the VRAM issues here, even if you considered the 970 to have only 3.5GB of "useful" VRAM, that's still more than a 780...

EDIT: Go with the 970 unless the 780 is significantly cheaper, in which case you can decide if you want more performance (970) or to save money (780)

I used the BIOS Update utility and bios version 2005 (the first that worked with Haswell Refresh) and it's working fine now. Could try updating to 2103 now but I don't really want to risk needing to pull off the heatsink and swap out CPUs again... So I think I'll just leave it.

Definitely give the Asus BIOS updater utility a try.  That is what I did when I personally updated by Z87-A, and it worked just fine.  Very painless, just don't turn anything off, it will reboot a few times, its perfectly normal, just let it do its thing.

Are you positive that the BIOS update went through properly?  Can you check CPU-Z to check that the BIOS number is corresponding with what you updated it to?

You could also try updating the BIOS on your motherboard, and try inserting the i3 to your mobo.  If you still get the error, then it is the i3 that is dead.

When the gtx680 and HD7970 were the strongest graphic cards on the market, AMD's architecture was good enough for gaming. Pair anything better than a gtx 770 (rebranded 680) or R9 280x (rebranded 7970) with a top end AMD cpu, and the cpu won't be pushing enough draw calls per clock to the graphic card to fully utilize the graphic horse power (dx11 bottleneck).

avoid pentiums for gaming. i3 or i5 is bare minimum if you want to use a 290/x/780/ti/970/980. If you want to SLI/CrossfireX then i7 or hyper-threaded E3 xeon.
