kev507 got a reaction from da na in Is C220 a real chipset?
C220 is a series of server chipsets. According to HP your desktop uses the Q85 chipset which was for business grade motherboards, similar to the consumer H87 or H85 chipset-

Yes this was poorly stated in an attempt to shorten the video

    1) we were only counting PCIe 3.0 equivs

    2) we narrowed the DMI spec to its linking lanes to the CPU

Will be more clear next time, sorry.. this was not the best way for us to do this

Most of us (I assume) wouldn't dream of spending as much on an SSD as we would on a top-tier GPU. But if you could get it for $550 instead of the regular $850, would you?

I have the opportunity to do so, and it's tempting to say the least, I'm just not sure if that's still overpaying... My PC is for gaming, VM's and work. I think I'd probably be most happy to have so much high speed storage for games, so I can take more of them off hard drives and to have programs start stupidly fast (I'm looking at you Outlook/Photoshop/Premiere)

kev507 reacted to leadeater in Question on JBOD and Raid10
Storage Spaces is completely new and was designed for server use. The traditional software RAID in Windows is awful and shouldn't be used if you can help it. Manually messing around with what Storage Spaces has done like what was shown in that link isn't generally a good idea. Potential for things to go horribly wrong if you try and modify the Storage Space configuration after doing what was shown.

If the default configuration options in Storage Spaces is considered good enough for server environments then I should imagine they are enough for desktop use.

Using the RAID capabilities of your motherboard is a much better idea than using Windows software RAID.

If anything this is the worst time to buy from Microcenter as their CPU prices have generally been creeping up over the last few weeks it seems.

You clearly have no clue of how an SSD benefits a PC.

Also 13TB of writes is nothing as these drives can easily sustain 1PB of total host writes without any issue (just look at xtremesystems.org ssd endurance test or techreports ssd endurance experiment).

I also have this exact same drive on my system for about 1.5years and it has 71TB total host write and it has absolutely no issues.

Also it doesn't matter if an SSD is SATA 2 3Gb/s as the biggest performance benefit from it is the access time (less than 1ms vs 15ms+ on hdd) and significantly faster read/write for small files (4k).

I have an old 160GB Intel 320 which is a SATA 2 3Gb/s and the load times of windows and games when compared to my other SSD's (m500, mx100, neutron gtx,  samsung 830) is virtually identical.

There are also options out there specifically for handing multiple displays smoothly, like the Nvidia NVS 510 which will run you about $330, but has special drivers for Nvidia Mosaic and can drive four 4K monitors @ 60Hz. You won't be able to do really any gaming at all, but it's technically the best fit for the task, even if it's not the best bang for the buck.

kev507 got a reaction from Adrenalintm in Intel phi
it's useful for the kinds of server applications you'd use a gpu for, like number crunching, ai, deep learning, weather mapping etc. The disadvantage to using gpu's for this kind of work is that you have to write code specifically for offloading and running the task on a gpu (ie: CUDA acceleration) which is obviously not an x86 processor

The Phi does NOT show up as more cores for your pc or server though, it shows up as it's own linux computer on an internal network...so the phi is useful in that we don't have to rewrite everything to run on it, it uses regular x86 instructions. Also, because it runs linux, it can't be used to accelerate windows programs. I can't see any practical use for an individual, and I can virtually guarantee this wont post in a consumer motherboard or even some workstations.

Scam. Factoring in margin for the seller he'd have to be buying them below a board partners cost.
    Didn't happen.
Take it from someone whose job it was to buy graphics cards in bulk and sell them for years.
