Anyone got any got concentration tips for when they're programming/coding?

So far I've narrowed it down to
Go to sleep no later than 10:30pm If working on an area you know thoroughly (and don't need to think about), listen to instrumental music If working on a different area you will need more problem solving elements, don't listen to music If people are chatting around you then listening to music may be better however being totally isolated is probably best. Changing up my scenery seems to help. If I'm particularly struggling with a piece of work I'll take my laptop away from my desk to the downstairs main table, it's not got the full tech setup but mentally it helps me. No more than 2 coffees in a 4ish hour period, I may physically be very awake if I have more but I would basically be a zombie mentally after that; I don't know why. If you're really stuck on a problem, try rubber duck debugging where you explain your problem to something, your methodical approach of explaining the problem usually reveals the answer ( I do prefer explaining to real people though) Surround yourself with people who are interested in programming (struggled to program in my spare time when all my friends were artists, guess all I wanted to do was draw! lol ) (If working from home) Have a main area dedicated to working, e.g. If possible don't be gaming in the same room that you do work, have that 'work environment' Don't need that taking up brain space.
There's probably some things I could do in terms of dietary changes but I've not really experimented with it

    Bigger drives are getting cheaper.
For me nas value is efficiency, power usage.
Those nas box is using low powered ARM or Celeron which are good enough for home usage.
A server would draw anywhere from 50-200w. And they are super loud.

Thats a barebones, so you need cpu + ram here for it to boot and those aren't cheap as its current gen.

But for a home nas, get the synology. Much quieter, much lower power, easier to use. And will work at the same speed on a gig network.

I disagree with being completely isolated.
I don't do much programming (mostly with a small Python script for my Raspberry Pi) but when I do I prefer at least hearing people talk.

Rubber duck debugging has come in handy. I use it more for hardware problems (what I mess with most), where I'll be stuck, go out to my mom, explain what I'm trying to do, what's not working, and maybe 3/4 of the way through explaining why it's not working I'll find the problem.

Main area dedicated for working, I can't really. My computers are all in the same spot, though what I do when I need to work is I'll boot into macOS. I'm not signed into Steam on macOS and I don't feel like trying out Minecraft there, but on Windows all of my games are there.
Once I get Linux fully working it'll be my coding OS, but for now I have:
    Windows - recreation
    macOS - school

Curious, what projects are you working on right now?

I would reduce my coffee to a maximum of 1 per 4 hour period. (may take a few days to adjust to the decrease, oy you could step down slowly reduce to 1 1/2 cup) or reduce coffee outside of programing.
Diet, eat well during your meals, when I eat healthier I really do feel more alert both mentally and physically. Try and cook when possible, I find it tends to be overall better and more satisfying. It can also help to have some sort of snack nearby, like popcorn and if calories are a concern try reducing your portion sizes at meals like reducing the amount you eat at the end of the day.
Set aside some time for exercise. This is best done AFTER you finish your work, as it can wear you out but will lead to better rest, increase blood flow and a more positive attitude due to all the good chemicals your brain releases after a workout.

It's in-house project management software for architects, not something I'm particularly interested in lol.

Isolation may just be something for me personally,
    I enjoy being in the office with other people but I personally find it hard to tune out people talking to focus solely on my work;
I do find instrumental music helpful for me with this but it doesn't always work for me so kinda gotta play it by ear.

camjocotem got a reaction from AbydosOne in 10Gb - 40Gb NICs for between $25 - $50 (Not inc delivery)
Disclaimer: All credit goes to my friend Maz0r, he's the one who found out about the project and did the hard work.

So providing I understand everything correctly...

The jist of it is old enterprise HP server 10Gb/40Gb NICs are getting sold on ebay for dirt cheap?

    Why cheap?

Because they have a proprietary connector FlexibleLOM or FlexLOM and so would only fit HP Server boards.
However the 'proprietary' part is a little misleading as it's actually still PCIe technology but the pins are shifted!
    They're also mostly refurbs.

This means that it was possible to develop a FlexLOM-Adapter
On the project page they list particular NICs that they support( I personally got the 561FLR-T):
    FlexibleLOM NIC Model Connectors v1.0 v1.1 331FLR Broadcom BCM5719 Quad RJ45 GbE ❌ ✔ 366FLR intel i350 Quad RJ45 GbE ✔ ✔ CX3 ALOM Mellanox ConnectX-3 Single SFP+ 10GbE ✔ ✔ 530FLR-SFP+ Broadcom BCM57810S Dual SFP+ 10GbE ❌ ✔ 544FLR-QSFP Mellanox ConnectX-3 Dual QSFP+ 40GbE ✔ ✔ 544+FLR-QSFP Mellanox ConnectX-3 Pro Dual QSFP+ 40GbE ✔ ✔ 560FLR-SFP+ intel 82599 Dual SFP+ 10GbE ✔ ✔ 561FLR-T intel X540 Dual RJ45 10GbE ✔ ✔
Now the first card my friend went to install did end up shorting his mobo + GPU (RIP GPU 😢 )
But the following 3 were fine after he added the small tabs around the screws where you would screw it in to hold it in place.
I've attached screenshots of the cards registering fine on windows.
UPDATE: The card is quite tall and wasn't screwed into the case, plugging a cable in was enough pressure to rotate the card within the slot causing the short
If getting one these cards be sure to fasten it to the case and it should be fine (like you would any other PCIe device)

My only uncertainty in this is that my second x16 PCIe slot can only have a max of x4 speeds which should in theory be enough for 10Gb ethernet though the adapter states it wants x8 so I'll be crossing my fingers for that part I guess.
If I end up buying a new mobo that already has 10Gb onboard I'll probably be selling one or two on the cheap or handing them back to friendo.

TLDR; I bought 3 10Gb NICs from my friend for £29 each for the card + adapter, also I paid him a bit extra for his time soldering :]

Edit: Clarification based on question; the adapter has 2 parts that need soldering together, the main adapter card and the FlexLOM connector:

camjocotem reacted to Eigenvektor in B450 Tomahawk Max PCI_E4 x16 physical slot only capable of x4?
Probably so it can physically take a x16 card. In the specs, it says this:
    https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-TOMAHAWK-MAX/Specification

    1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 slot (PCI_E4, supports x4 mode)1
PCI_E4 will run x2 speed when installing devices in PCI_E2/ PCI_E3 slot.

~edit: It may also simply be cheaper to manufacture when using the same type of slot everywhere, regardless of the PCIe connection.

Heat is the enemy of any electronic. It may impair maximum performance and shorten the live of the device itself, especially if the switch is going to be constantly busy.

However, many pieces of network hardware are built to work in extremes of temperature. You’ll have to check the specifications to see if your attic temperature falls in that range on the worst of days. What are the highest and lowest temperatures that you record in the attic?

There are passively cooled and actively cooled switches out there. Obviously, the actively cooled ones with fans will perform slightly better in warmer environments, but if you have a lot of dust in that environment, that might make the situation worse as dust will collect on surfaces and impair heat dissipation.

You can find “industrial” switches which are built into cases that essentially function like a giant heat sink. Ubiquiti makes one, but there are others out there from different vendors. Obviously, they’re not going to be cheap.

I’d be more concerned about heat and the NAS, especially if the NAS has mechanical storage drives.

Just save the spreadsheet and any Windows PC with office will be able to run it...below is just a very simple, stupid example but you should be able to create something more complex that looks a lot better.
