Some of that is kinda by design, to entice upgrades to the latest phones.

On the other hand Apple also needs to foster developer support for the feature, and that requires a wide user base. (otherwise the feature will be end up being killed, see the Touchbar or 3D Touch)

I think keeping the Dynamic Island exclusive to the Pros for 12 months was fair game, now it’s already on all the latest phones. And on last year’s Pros. (incidentally, Pro iPhones have bigger sales numbers than vanilla iPhones)

Apple still sell the SE, 13 and 14/14+, so the day every iPhone available on the Store will have Dynamic Island is still a couple of years down the line, but it will come. But by then there will be new exclusive features for the latest Pro phones 😄

I just stumbled upon this whole ordeal and frankly, it's a little disappointing. Not the errors itself, but the whole handling of the situation up until the latest video feels less like actual acknowledgement of legitimate criticism and more like a constant attempt to reframe the situation and shift blame (much like what Gamers Nexus said in their second video responding to Linus' post in this thread).

Credit where credit is due, taking a week off from regular work to focus on internal processes is a step in the right direction. But this definitely negatively impacted my opinion of Linus in particular. No doubt it's a hard job and a tough business, but he didn't hold himself up to the same standards he seems to expect of others when it comes to valid criticism. And Steve's point is very valid, a lot of these issues seem to stem from a self-imposed upload schedule that they (at their size) evidently do not have to follow to stay relevant. I hope they actually learn from it and immediately do the right thing next time.

Yeroh reacted to igormp in Is upgrading my Ryzen 3700x to a 5800x3d a worthwhile investment?
Even if the performance increase is meaningful when looking at benchmarks or raw numbers, it may be not worth a damn for you in the end.

Let's say you have a 144hz monitor, your 3700x only nets you 100fps due do a bottleneck, a 5800x3d manages to give you 160fps, and a 13900k gives you 250fps. The first upgrade was nice and gave you performance that meets your needs, but the second one, even though it provides a really nice jump, won't offer any tangible benefit.

Anyhow, if you do indeed feel like you're being bottlenecked after you get your GPU, I'd say to just go for a 5800x3d and way until the entire DDR5 ecossystem is more mature and cheaper.

Yeroh reacted to KnoT in Is upgrading my Ryzen 3700x to a 5800x3d a worthwhile investment?
For Gaming in 1080P if you want MAX fps as an upgrade to your existing platform then yes, as for DDR5 stuff you would need to upgrade whole platform so mobo, ram and ofc CPU but I would hold on until 7XXX x3D CPUs for that.

But if you play on 60HZ monitor then no. (Unless you are Factorio freak) as for 1440p you have to check the benchmarks for your GPU.

Yeroh reacted to igormp in Is upgrading my Ryzen 3700x to a 5800x3d a worthwhile investment?
Is the performance you're getting from your current CPU good enough for your needs? If so, no need to upgrade.

However, if you're noticing that the performance isn't as you expected, and your GPU isn't able to reach 99~100% usage, then it might be a good idea.

Yeroh reacted to Ripred in Is upgrading my Ryzen 3700x to a 5800x3d a worthwhile investment?
I did exactly this upgrade and its been a treat, though in the same vein of what Igormp mentioned the reason I did it was due to some latency and 1% low/frame dropping issues in certain games and programs, I don't even have a GPU as fast as your 6800xt but I can say I definitely got more Avg fps in many of my games though sometimes the improvement is only seen in the 1% lows/frametimes but still a welcomed improvement better to have 55fps 1%Lows than 43fps 1%low, and the Majority of stutters are only a memory
The main reason to get this chip is if your not ready to build a whole new rig but you still want to keep up with the hardware demands of games for the next few generations, which for me was the final deciding point, I have no interest in building with first gen on a new platform and I probably wont have the budget to build a new when the next gen of chips come out... my intention is to skip Am5 and intel equivalent so ill have a solid budget to do a nice build later
It really depends on your wants and needs, are you getting solid performance, no hitching/lagging, latency issues, stutters that ruin the game? if not and everything is good, you can just enjoy what you have until you want/have the means to do a new build, unless your like me and wanting to skip the current platforms all together

Yeroh got a reaction from Bombastinator in G14 2022 (G402) vs M16 2022 as travel powerhouse
I was making the same decision and chose the 2022 G14 for its better portability and battery life. In nearly every review that I watched or read, people mentioned that the M16 cannot cope with the high temperatures and the high power draw of the Intel CPU, leading to mediocre battery life and less performance than the specs would have you expect.

My G14 ultimately got refunded since I had issues with it, but when I had it (and when it worked), it was a fantastic little device. Portable enough to compete with my prior MacBook Pro 13" (albeit heavier) and more than powerful enough for all modern games. The one thing I'll say is: Wait for the 2023 model and hope for some internal updates. The 2022 and prior have a terrible MediaTek wifi card that causes issues for many users - you'll easily be able to find complaints online. In my unit that resulted in terrible wifi performance after standby and subpar performance in general (drops to 40Mbit/s when my other devices next to it were able to get 250Mbit/s).

If you want to stay in the apple eco system I'd suggest the M1 Pro because of the better screen, connectivity and power. It will last you much longer and if you ever want to play games on it in the future you will be able to. But only if you can justify spending 2k€ on a laptop.

If you don't mind switching to Windows/Linux take a look at rtings.com it's the best site I've found so far for reviews. They test Laptops in many different categories so you can decide what's most important to you and choose the right system.
There are many much cheaper laptops that would fulfill your needs but there is nothing wrong in treating yourself to something a bit more overkill if it makes you more comfortable and happy with your decision.

I bought the 14" MBP as a long time Windows laptop user. I will say that after experiencing the 120Hz ProMotion and Mini-LED display on it, it'll be hard to look at a 60FPS screen again. I also consume quite a bit of media on it, and it's also pretty fantastic for HDR content. The auto scaling of the screen refresh rate down to 24Hz when watching movies is fantastic and gives me great battery life.

The GPU on it is actually quite powerful and can handle a variety of games, even through Parallels/CrossOver, and you can play a small handful of iOS/iPadOS only games through sideloading.

Having a USB-C port on the right-side of the chassis has helped me quite a few times, just a nice to have.

All that said, these are quite worth the premium over the M2 Air, for sure. The screen alone is worth the >$200 markup in my opinion. Vs the M1 Air is more challenging, if all you do is browse the web and light work. I think you could get away with just 8GB and 256GB, and leverage external storage in some way.

My advice: Apple has a 15-day return period. Go buy a refurbished M1 Air, and see how it lives up to your expectations. (I say refurbished because I kinda feel bad buying a new product just so I can return it later). If it does go ahead and get yourself the M1 Air, if not then yeah wait for the next 14" Pros and re-evaluate then.

MacBook Air. Best battery life on the market, ARM based laptops with chips like Apple's M1/M2 are the future (and the way Apple's entire product stack has gone) so should hold up extremely well.

Man, the pricing is absolutely nuts in Europe.

I get the exchange rate fluctuation, but the 14 Pro Max now starts at 1450€. That's pricing that was previously reserved for bleeding edge technology like the Samsung Fold devices. If you want even just a little bit more storage you're looking at 1500€+ for a Pro iPhone, and the 14 Pro Max goes all the way to 2100€. Even the most basic iPhone 14 with 128 GBs now costs 1000€.

That has to cost them a lot of market share over the mid to long term. Many companies have stricter approval processes for investments starting at 1000€ and for the average consumer, breaking the 1000€ barrier with the bog standard iPhone will also be a reason to reconsider. In the past, the standard models were an easy choice for anyone wanting a modern iPhone without having to spend four figures on a smartphone. And they didn't even lower the pricing of the existing iPhone 13 lineup, that still starts at 800€.

I mean I get it, they want to keep their high margins in the current high inflation environment. But there has to be a point at which the loss in the number of total sales will eclipse the benefit of the higher margins, and I think they're about to find out where that point is.

I have a nearly fully broken smartphone and decided to wait for what Apple would have this year for sale as the rumours made it sound like a significant upgrade.

As nice as the new iPhone 14 Pro Max (and the smaller one) look like I just checked the pricing in Portugal and I'm at a total loss for words:

Iphone 14 Pro Max 1TB pricing in the USA: 1599$, 1399$ for the 512GB model.

iPhone 14 Pro Max 512GB pricing in Portugal: 1889€, 2149€ for the 1TB model?!!!

This is beyond insane and I cannot see what justification there could possibly be for this - an iPhone 14 Pro Max costing as much or more than the 512GB Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is ludicrous -_-

I really wanted an iPhone (the iPhone 13 Pro Max 512GB was being sold for 1629€ back when it was Apple's latest model in here) but this year it feels like it'd be cheaper for me to go to the US and return home just to buy this thing, something I'll definitely not do.

I always had Android phones until I decided to try the iPhone starting with the 6S Plus and I've not looked back since.

Truthfully, they are more locked down and if you're the type to tinker with your phone, an iPhone probably isn't for you. But if you don't, the reliability and longevity that you can get out of modern iPhones is fantastic. If you're a heavy user, you might want to consider a battery swap after two or three years, but if you do that, you could probably use the phone for at least five to six years without any issue.

And Apple is offering a lot more in terms of customization than they were back in the day. You can even set a wallpaper now!

But jokes aside, I think it's an experience worth trying. If you don't like it, iPhones have fantastic resale value, so there's not a lot of value lost if you end up switching back to an Android device.

Enlightenment happens when you realize that diversity is more than plumbing & tan; and that a white dude from NYC and a white dude from rural Iowa have far less in common than a white dude from NYC and a black woman from NYC.

It all stems from a failure of imagination.  A failure to see the potential value of every age group, every socio-economic bracket, etc.  I'm fairly certain that those who are flippantly described as "tech illiterate" are also some of the same people who would be asking:

That might be important in an age when every tech company wants to remove the last vestiges of personal privacy....

Frankly, I also like the versatility of white, you can still make the room look nice with pictures and decoration and it's easy to match to your furniture. Plus, as others have mentioned, it does make the space feel very bright and spacious.

I'm not vaccinated against Covid-19 either (even though I am vaccinated against other illnesses), and it's mainly out of fear of unforeseen side or long-term effects.

Yes, I know that Covid-19 itself isn't harmless, but let's also be realistic here. Within my age group (20-29) only 85 people have died while having the virus. 592.361 people in the same age group were infected, leaving us at a death risk of 0,00014%, and that is not even considering whether these people had prior illnesses or were under the influence of drugs or other substances - the actual risk might be even lower (all of the data is for Germany, by the way).

Meanwhile, people have literally died as a consequence of taking the AstraZeneca vaccine. A study from April even suggested that, given a low-exposure risk, the potential risk of vaccination even outweighs the benefit in age groups 20-29 and 30-39.

Granted, not everybody necessarily dies from Covid-19, you can still have a bad time regardless, I don't doubt that for a second. However, we don't really have much concrete data on the long-term effects of both the infection and the vaccination yet. Some argue that many illnesses, like the regular flu, can also take a while to fully recover from - others say that it's absolutely worse in the case of Covid. I don't know which of these findings is more credible, but the point is: It's not so clear to me that I need a vaccination to protect myself, especially when the risk that is involved with the vaccine is still partially unknown. And apparently, the vaccinations we have so far won't stop you from spreading it either.

Look, I'm not against vaccination in general, I just want to make a point that not everyone who's hesitant is necessarily someone who is hesitant out of ignorance or malice. I will likely end up getting the vaccine in the next couple of days since our government is essentially forcing us to, but I'm legitimately worried about potential side effects. I don't want to be, and I'm telling myself that it's safe, but cases like the narcolepsy that occurred after the swine flu vaccines do linger in my mind.
