It would fix his problem tho... More RAM would probably help and an SSD is always a great way to boost performance. For reapplying thermal paste, a paper towel is fine. Use isopropyl alcohol to wet the paper towel. Also, make sure to take lots of pictures and put your screws in a bowl or something. That will make life easier when putting your laptop back together.

i5 > FX Don't question it. A lot of forum users have gone this route and they all got screwed. Get an i5. It won't bottleneck your 690 while an FX CPU will.

You'll have to be more specific with your problem. Check your display resolution, and if it's not already selected, choose the one that has (native) next to it. What display interface are you using? (HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, etc.) What monitor are you using?

I would upgrade before the free upgrade expires, but there's no rush. It may improve performance slightly, but not by much.

I would say 13" is best for students. I have a 15" laptop and it's just too big for schoolwork, but I'm stuck with it until I graduate high school in 2018

I would LOVE a 1080p display on my laptop. Don't get me wrong. It's just that I wouldn't like a 17" screen. A 1080p 15" screen would be great IMHO. I use my laptop for school too, and (in high school) the desks barely fit a 15" laptop with whatever else you're working on. In college it wouldn't matter. Glad to help

I have a laptop with similar specs except a few generations older. I have an i5-3230m and GT 740M. Games run well on medium settings at 1366 x 768. The laptop you've linked to will probably struggle at 1080p though. Along with that, I personally wouldn't like having a 17" laptop. That's just way too big for me, but your friend may want that. Also, I despise Acer laptops because I got 3 broken ones. The specs aren't bad, but I would go with a smaller laptop and a different brand. However, it's up to you and your friend.
