dreamcast4599 reacted to RONOTHAN## in why is XMP greyed out on my motherboard bios?
XMP is a memory overclock, and in order to be overclocked there must be something that is a base clock. Those base values are referred to as JEDEC values, as JEDEC is the organization that creates the DDR standards. That memory kit only has programmed onto it those base JEDEC values, in this case 1600 CL10, so that's what it will run at no matter what, whether XMP is enabled or disabled.

That memory kit you're using only has JEDEC values on it, there's no XMP profile the motherboard can detect.

dreamcast4599 reacted to kitnoman in need help choosing a GPU for my i7 4790
If only between the two at almost the same price, get the 480 8gb. that's like the same card with 4gb more vram.
If 6600 or 6600xt or 6650tx are right around $120-180. Then, this is the best choice. RX 400/500 were great mining cards. Not only are they old now, to the point of humors they will lose driver support soon. There's a very high chance that whatever you buy now might have been heavily mined on. Personally, I really don't mind using a card that's been used on mining. But that depends if the original owner knows how to mine the right way.

Edit: more on mined cards. So even if the gpu was well maintained and taken care of. Meaning, it was not push to the extreme to get the highest hashrate, but set up so that it won't go over 50-60c temp and undervolted and even regularly cleaned too. In all likelihood, those cards' silicon/chip could be in a better condition than gpus that were overclocked, not cleaned regularly and on cases that was not well ventilated. Which were a lot during those times, mesh cases weren't really popular or expensive during the 10 series/rx 500 come out. So either those 400/500 cards are old gaming card or a relatively new 480/580/570 that come out during the mining bull run, regardless, you might be looking at gpu fans that are at it's limit. So the actual gpu could be in good condition but the fans are not. So you might need to service and replace them. It's actually easy if you have the tools and know where to get the parts. All you need is a video guide and confidence. What I'm saying is. Given that all these cards might have been used for mining(including the the rx 6000 series), age,  driver support and condition and performance, a 6600 really might be the best. Specially if the rx 400/500 cards are at $70-100, while 6600 are at $100-120. It would be newer,  would have a longer driver support and the most import almost double the gaming performance for the extra $20-40.

dreamcast4599 got a reaction from Why_Me in Rubbish performance on decent spec
only suggestion i have outside of a fresh install of windows would be to hop into settings and one by one uninstall each program one at a time each time you do an un install test performance once performance is how you like it look at the last thing you removed and boom you found your issue

dreamcast4599 reacted to Eigenvektor in Rubbish performance on decent spec
Could also have been an update to the game itself that either increased its requirements or introduced some performance killing issue. Or some unintentional change to its settings.

I added a comparison to similar hardware on 3D Mark: https://www.3dmark.com/compare/spy/44738559/spy/27941536

It looks like your CPU is a fair bit slower, while your GPU is a lot slower, likely because its clocks are a lot lower. So I would expect some form of throttling is going on. If it isn't thermal related, it might be power. Though I dare say it is likely a thermal limit, looking at the temperature difference.

Yours is at 91°C and its average clock speed below 500 MHz, compared to over 2 GHz for the other. Just be aware that the number one spot is likely held by an overclocked system using LN2, so don't necessarily expect to get close to it. Maybe add some lower ranked system to the comparison as well.

It's not great, but then again, this is Haswell and so as long as the board isn't cost cut to the extreme, it's good enough. You almost certainly could've come across something a bit better for the money if you had tried to wait it out, but it's unlikely that would've mattered in the long run.

dreamcast4599 got a reaction from RevGAM in Should my setup should be colder?
i run a 39600x ryzen 9 on a 360mm aio from cooler master and while not as hot as your intel chip she was still hot at full load under an aida 64 stress test what i did since my case has room for it is i added an additional 3 120mm fans to the aio so i run all 6 aio fans in a push/pull config meaning the top 3 fans pull air in and the bottom 3 exhaust it into the case and since the aio is in the top of my case enthoo primo from phanteks the rear 120mm case fan sucks the hot case air out the back i also have two 120mm intakes at the front and two 120mm intakes on the bottom all fans but the rear exhaust are filtered with  dust filters so if your case has room for it consider adding 3 more aio fans see if the temps help another benefit of a push/pull config is the fans dotn have to work as hard to keep the cpu cool

@Somerandomtechyboi usa arizona and prolly ebay as that seems to be the cheapest my budget for a mobo is 50$ us or less the cheaper the better for cpu budget is 30 or less keep in mind my friends last computer was a core 2 duo laptop that died on him so this will be his first desktop only reason i mentioned lga 1366 is because i one had an hp z400 prebuilt with an x5675 in it so im a tad familiar with X58 aka 1366
