  1. Many years ago in the first company I worked in IT for, the Netware servers were named after Beer and the Microsoft servers after Spirits, obviously the Unix team had to go one better and named their servers from Star Trek.
  2. Wow, think of all that facial recognition data they will be able to sell onwards, exact time and place for each face seen by the bell, cross reference that against every other entry in their database well that's got to be worth a bit more on top....right? I suppose that nowadays if you want privacy of any kind, toss out everything 'tech' other than the old Tube TV and VCR in the loft and start wearing a burka.
  3. Hard coded phone tracking /nod (Well they really need to track all your movements whether you want them to or not in order to sell the data!) T&C Update - 'After seeing the push notification by continuing to use this device you wholly consent to the soul of your first born to be signed over to Samsung for perpetuity'
  4. 30% off a 250 quid speaker? - Probably better off just going and trading your old one into CEX for a small handful of beer tokens or sell it on one of the online tat bazaars, however if you are thinking of upgrading to a several K sonos system then the 30% off actually starts to make sense, you get a lot more off something new than you would ever get flogging the old one and then you can simply toss it in a black bag, into your bin and leave it in landfill to be found by archaeologist's 2000 years from now. Is Bricking it an ethical way to do things? - Hell no but it saves them on the postage and disposal fees of you sending something back to them!
  5. I don't think it's the upgrading of the monitor that is the real question, it's more a case of 'When will most users have a graphics card capable of running 4k at a useable resolution?' I have been toying with upgrading a 5 year old 24 inch 144hz 1080 monitor but with the exception of Eve I really can't think of any game I play that needs more screen realestate for the HUD. 1440 is workable with my early adopted gtx1080, 4k at a decent refresh rate will not work with the same 1080 so splashing out £500+ on a monitor then having to spend another £grand on a graphics card tells me that 4k as standard will be quite a while away for gamers. Office users however, well even though it only runs at 30Hz off the work laptop, I wouldn't part with the 4k monitor on my desk for anything! (But that's a relatively cheap 4k monitor not a games capable 100Hz+ monster)
  6. I have been running an R5 for a few years now, just rebuilt my system round it as the R6 is not much of an upgrade at all. 2 front 140 intake, one bottom 120 intake, 1 rear 140 exhaust but I only use the furthest back top fan slot as a 140 extract and have had no overheat issues in any way and minimal dust build-up. As for quiet even with a top fan slot open, well it's about 5 feet away from me so it's never an issue (unlike my server that sounds like a hovercraft).
  7. Razer Lachesis mouse, started to die at 22 months, got a new one, lasted over 2 more years - I'd have bought 10 if I knew they were going out of production Mamba TE -dodgy laser sensor, acts odd every now and again in games (just gets you killed 3 or 4 times a week) replaced a couple of weeks ago with the optical sensor model and worked fine. Keyboard - don't get me started, totally crap razer green switches, keycaps regularly snap off a teeny 1,,x2mm bit of plastic so become unstable/fall off if you don't hit them square, had to resort to spamming twitter/FB/ and a threat of Court Action to get a new left shift sent out after every spare keycap I had died in that position - no reinforcement on keys/caps so any off centre pressure just pops a little bit of the keycap 'cross' off and keycap is unusable. Replaced with a Corsair K95 Platinum and I'm happy now.

  9. Been looking at 27 inch WQHD Monitors and had pretty much settled on the Gigabyte Aorus AD27QD-EK - 144 Hz, G-Synch Compatible when along comes Amazon when I'm close to hitting buy and tosses this into the mix Acer Predator XB271HUbmiprz 165 Hz, IPS and native G-synch rather than compatible for about 10% more (around £50) Now i'm torn in 2 and need to bounce the question off those on the forun Which is better? (Oh and use - eve Online, a little TD2, add in some Diablo 3, Rust and a little Lightroom/Photoshop on the side) Ta in advance
  10. Ok, cheers for that, I'll give the 1080 a run for it's money before looking to swap it out. PSU is ok, I have never skimped on that, have a HX750 platinum in the case already, CPU/MB is contentious just now so I'll keep quiet on that front. Ta
  11. SO my 6 year old PC is finally with the <insert deity of choice here> up in the silicon graveyard (Z97 MB finally died after years of OC abuse), New CPU/MB/RAM on order. Graphics wise I picked up a Palit Jetstream GTX1080 when they first came out and to be honest for 1080p gaming it's been great on a 144hz monitor. Looking to upgrade to a Gigabyte Aorus AD27QD monitor, the 1080 will probably not be good enough to drive this at 120+Hz so which card should I be aiming for this time round (excluding anything with the word Titan in it!)?
  12. Sorry for a late reply, issues at work all day. I will be using it for Lightroom/Photoshop and for gaming, at the moment I'm just running a gtx1080 I picked up before the prices spiked and find it's fine for running everything I play with the exception of TD2 at 120/144hz@1080 quite happily. Aria was indeed a goto for prices as it was higher in some (but in stock) and less than others and overall form a couple of other check sources usually came out cheap or competitive and makes life easier to just buy it all from one place with one 'before 10am Sat delivery' to pay for. The ram i mentioned above is 3200Mhz. MB Spec - 8 sata ports, not losing any if I ever get an NvME drive and a decent number of USB ports and decent VRM's is my main concern, I do like to try to OC my money's worth out of something. The d14 can indeed be sent a mount if you send proof of purchase off to Noctua (and I run a fractal R5 case so I'm not bothered what anything looks like as long as it keeps my horde of fans quiet To be honest i'm tempted just to just stick with Intel, but the possibility of further refining of drivers etc for the AMD series 3 CPU and the probable longevity of AM4 socket over the LGA1151 is holding me back a bit, I doubt a fab change from Intel will stay on the same socket (I may be wrong) but AMD will be supporting AM4 for a couple of years yet. Well war and peace ends, the beer garden calls just as soon as this lousy chiller decides to run for more than 20m without tripping out!
  13. Ok my second post in a couple of days and it's a bit of a dilemma having shopped about for parts I noticed a bit of a price trend this side of the pond - Please note prices posted in GBP not USD and yes the importers are having a laugh in the UK with exchange rates here. It's a toss up between Intel and AMD i9-9900k (£475) and a Rog Maximus XI Hero (£238) £713 (I already have a Noctua DH14 on my i74790k so no costs for a cooler to worry about) 3700x (£315) and a Rog Crosshair VIII Hero (£369) £684 (£29 less than the i9 solution above) 3900x (£620) and a Rog Crosshair VIII Hero (£369) £989 (£276 MORE than the i9 solution above) Now comes the RAM question, AMD is a bit more picky there, I can get the usual 32Gb of Corsair Vengance for £156 16-19-19-36 which I know will run fine on intel, but don't know enough about AMD really to say either way. The question is for a 4% saving, would you choose the 3700x over a i9-9900k (or spend 40% more on the 3900x) (I'm not an intel fanboy, I started out on Cyrix, moved to AMD then when Intel started thrashing them moved over with the i7-860 then the i7-4790k - I'd keep that for a while but the MB is dying and I might as well just pull the trigger and upgrade again)
  14. Cheers, cost not a sticking point but I mentally draw the line at the price of a 3900x, that's more than I paid for a gtx1080! 3700x and a mid range x570 it is! Just one last quick query if anyone reads but....... 16Gb or 32Gb RAM for Photo editing (ok yes I'm new to this crap but that's what comes with picking photography as a mid life crisis, gaming specs no probs but work???)
  15. Planning on getting rid of the old i7 4970k that's been plodding along with a good OC (4.8Ghz) for the past half a decade or so, it's starting to become unhappy when I have a lot of images open and running Photoshop and/or Lightroom plus the usual garbage running in the background. My biggest pointer to change is that only 2 of the SATA ports on the ageing Z97 motherboard still work and the cost of picking up a new one there days is just insane, anything mid to top end current is cheaper! Looking to switch to AMD for current obvious reasons, just checking with those who read this - Which Ryzen? - 3600, 3700x or 3900x - I'm leaning towards the 3600 to be honest (Have a nice older 1080 gsynch monitor I really don't want to get rid of for a 2k/4k just yet so my gtx1080 is going into whatever I end up getting and runs all the games I currently paly with ease at 120Hz+ if I want (with the exception of TD2)). O and not too bothered with Overclocking the AMD for the small gains you get other than a simple 'let the software do it' clicky, the I OC was a significant boost that's not viable on the AMD. Please do let me know. Ta
