My grandpa always seems to have a doubt on his phone and wants me to help him. I am very happy to help him with it.
But it has turned into a point where he expects me to do all the work on his phone when I'm around him, it gets annoying fast.

What's more annoying? He always asks me the same doubts he had earlier and pretends like he does not know how things work but does the same things when I'm not around him. I don't get the psychology behind it???

Thought it would be fun to make a topic about, all of our experiences with all the people, who doesn't really understand all the tech.
Note: Don't make this too harsh on them. You need to help them, not yell at them.
    I'll go first:
So my mom has a daycare. And one day I am sitting on the floor with my laptop. And one of the kids, with real dirty hands come and put his hand on the screen. Guess he thought it was a touch screen. Still haven't gotten it off, and it was 3 months ago.
My grandmother is scared of getting rid of the computer, because she thinks it will cut the power to her house.

TJ10 reacted to NotTheFirstDaniel in Steve Wozniak calls out former employer Apple for their stance against Right to Repair
    Summary
In a video directed towards Louis Rossmann, Steve Wozniak, a co-founder of Apple, spells out his grievances against Apple specifically about their stance against Right to Repair. Wozniak, a subscriber of Rossmann's, recalls Apple's success in the early days with the Apple II, claiming that Apple wouldn't be as successful as it is today without the openness of the Apple II and it's architecture. Back in the day, Wozniak would go as far as to include a schematic in the box of every Apple II.

He ends the video with the statement "Is it your computer, or is it some company's computer? It's time to start doing the right things."

    My thoughts
I don't know if this belongs in general discussion or if this belongs in tech news. If a mod wants to move it to general discussion, I'll completely understand, but I thought that since this is tech, and technically "news" (A person like this supporting right to repair in the way he called out Apple should be news), I'd post it here.

First of all, the irony. It's just funny how the co-founder of Apple is calling out Apple decades later for not respecting the repair industry. But Woz has always been a quaint man in my opinion. He never saw dollar signs, he saw fun and joy out of his products. That's what, in my opinion, makes him so wholesome. Someone who actually cares about the industry, and isn't in it for the money, fame, or power.

Hopefully this, including with the awaiting directive from the POTUS, puts the Right to Repair movement in the mainstream, enough for people to donate to the cause, and enough to make it a direct ballot initiative. That's what we want. That's the fastest and easiest way to pass something as big as a Right to Repair Act. With big names like the POTUS and the literal inventor of one of the most successful computer lines ever being in support of Right to Repair, maybe millionaire donors will donate to the cause, because from what I hear, direct ballot initiatives cost a lot of money especially when you are dealing with the biggest names in technology, Apple, Google, and Microsoft, who can afford to spend billions lobbying against it.

TJ10 reacted to D13H4RD in Your Ryzen laptop is (probably) throttled quite heavily when on battery - and it's (probably?) not a huge deal
If you've been keeping track of Intel's notoriously petty and face-on-ground marketing, especially for Tiger Lake-based systems (especially when it came to the "Evo" branding), you'd probably see a slide not unlike the one below, where Intel was claiming AMD gets its battery performance claims because it's putting a muzzle on how fast it can go when away from the charger.

This was on a Zen 2-based Renoir APU, and Intel rather cheekily (and quite obviously) left out the fact that its boost behavior does result in higher battery drain during such periods. Now though, with a brand-new lineup of Zen 3-based Cezanne APUs and lots of high-end designs that utilize the best of AMD, one question that some have is whether boosting behavior has been tweaked?

Well, it hasn't, not by much anyway.

Tests by Gordon Ung noted that while the Ryzen 5800U has shown to smoke the Intel Core i7 1185G7 in many tasks, many of which were while the laptop is connected to AC power. When running on battery, the script does flip, sometimes by a little, sometimes by a lot.

The delta isn't massive when in the "Best Performance" preset, with around a 20-25%-ish performance delta between plugged and unplugged, though the delta between plugged and unplugged when on the "Better Battery" preset is quite significant, though perhaps not entirely unexpected.

It's also worth noting that the Intel machine doesn't keep that performance for nothing, as it does chug down quite a lot more watts in bursts in order to maintain that level of performance when off the charger.

Interestingly, Daniel Rubino of Windows Central noted that the SSD is also throttled when on battery, due to a feature called PCIe Speed Power Policy (PCPP).

My thoughts (this is going to be a long one, but you all need to read this!)
The big question that I'm sure many would be asking right now is "Is AMD wrong in doing this?"

And the answer is a big straight-up no. What AMD is doing is effectively not that much different from many older laptops, where off-charger performance is significantly hampered in an effort to conserve energy, particularly as processors of that era have not reached the level of performance-per-watt that current-generation designs have managed to achieve. In fact, some of the bench graphs show that Intel does also throttle performance a bit when off the charger, particularly in lightened workloads.

And it is definitely worth noting that while these charts do indeed show a drastic drop-off especially in the "Better Battery" mode, it is important to note the context, in which these involve ultra-portable low-wattage laptops. It's more likely that a user would be doing tasks like browsing the web or doing document work on such a machine, where the additional responsiveness of Intel's boost behavior may not be as apparent, but battery saving measures, even at the cost of performance, may be more appreciated. Even Gordon makes that case in his article.
Neither AMD and Intel have a straight up "wrong" strategy here, moreso that they are very different. Intel is very clearly focused on responsiveness at the expense of outright efficiency, whilst AMD is perfectly happy to ease off the pedal significantly in order to gain more work-per-watt. Depending on your priorities, you might find one or the other more appealing.

With that said, here is where I get a bit more opiniated and personal. While I perfectly understand each company's reasoning for what they're doing, I am disappointed that there is no real way to fully adjust the way they behave through Windows' power settings. Intel's power consumption spikes are significantly calmer when in "Better Battery", but not usually by a big amount, whilst AMD's performance improves in "Best Performance", there's no real way to fully lift off the muzzle if, for whatever reason, you need all the CPU performance off-the-charger to finish off some work, such as editing photos on Lightroom.

While neither philosophies are straight-up wrong, I'm disappointed that I can't really have the option of straight up gimping performance significantly when I need to conserve my watts, or going full-ham on battery when I need to finish off that landscape photograph on Lightroom.

Starting July 15th any website where more than a third of its hosted content is pornography or any website which hosts pornography and makes money through charging a fee or advertising will be legally obligated to verify the age of anybody trying to access them from the UK.
Failure to comply will result in the offending sites being blocked by ISPs.
Originally the plan was to fine website owners however this would be hard to enforce however ministers have made it clear they will look at fines and other possible measures in the future.
The BBFC will have ultimate responsibility for the the action, they will be able to have sites that don't obey blocked. Ultimately how the age is verified will be left up to the sites but there will also be a "reward" mark made available for sites that offer "robust data protection schemes".
Adults will be able to purchase "porn passes" from registered shops to verify their age face to face.

Honestly i am one of those guys who have got into a sticky situation with pc crash due unstable overclock(not necessarily the reason but that is what i think it was ) during BIOS update. When you update your bios in os it has to reboot, my pc got stuck in windows restarting screen forever. And i did the thing any smart(dumb) person would do in such a situation hard shut down the pc. After which it wont boot, no video output, only the lights on cpu cooler and  on the motherboard bright on, when i thought i had bricked my motherboard. Upon some going through the mobo manual and forums, i found that most Motherboards these days have a solution for cases like these. So 2 solutions:
    1) Remove the CMOS battery for a few seconds after powering off/
    2) Short the jumper (use a screw driver to touch the 2 pins (method might vary from board to boards))
Another method on some boards is the change the bios or switch the cover on jumper

Hope this helps if you fail

On a modern machine, BIOS updates are very safe unless you turn off the system, it loses power, etc. Even then, lots of modern motherboards come with a dual BIOS that you can switch to if your main BIOS corrupts. Back in the days of LGA 775, AM2+, even LGA 1156 and 1155, BIOS updates were a little scary. On LGA 775 boards in particular, it was just a good idea not to ever update your BIOS unless you needed to for CPU compatibility, RAM compatibility, stability problems, etc., because so much as looking at the board funny while it was updating could brick it.

I still use a USB to flash updates on desktops, but the Windows utilities from ASUS, Gigabyte, AsRock and MSI in particular are all solid and specifically designed not to brick your motherboard. On laptops, I just use the manufacturer's utility to handle the job. A modern BIOS update on LGA 1151 or AM4 shouldn't take more than 5-7 minutes to complete.

TJ10 reacted to mariushm in How long for a BIOS update?
It should take around a minute, maybe 2 minutes. I'd say if it takes more than 5 minutes I'd be worried but I wouldn't mess with the computer until I go over the 10 minute mark.
BIOS sizes are these days 16-32 MB and the write speeds are usually 100 KB/s+ so it should take about 10s per MB or less.

This does not stoke me personally as a solid long term build, though it is a solid shorter term one. It should work fine at least till the consoles come out.  I don’t know what nation of origin is so I can’t compare pricing.

    -the motherboard is solid.
-the memory is a bit slow but solid enough.
-The 3500 is imho a slightly weaker chip long term than the 2600 because it lacks multithread.  There is disagreement on this one.  I could be wrong. It does have faster single core than the 2600.  It’s a question of whether the extra thread capacity will turn out to be needed or not. 3500s can’t even be had in the US. It’s an OEM part only here.  It might be really cheap though.
-The 570 is below the lowest projected spec for the upcoming consoles.  There are older used cards that might be better value.
