ZFS doesn't require ECC to work at all, the people who spent thousands of hours of their lives engineering it have said so. In settings that are not mission critical a simple weekly pool scrub will suffice.

Yea sure a cosmic ray flipping a bit bla bla bla data corruption... we know. It happens. ECC and a motherboard certified for it almost doubles the price, and the point of the video was to undercut off the shelf solutions.

Linus just tweeted that unfortunately we lost Tyler. Tyler was an amazing person, according to what most people said. And from what I saw on camera I agree. I'm really sorry for his loss. If there is anything the tech community can do to help his family, Im sure we'll be able to. May he rest in peace.🤍🤍

I recently subbed to UFD Tech and to be quite honest, I skimmed past that video because I'm much too used to videos called "It's Over" being clickbaity non-videos that are not worth my time. Honestly I would have watched if the title was different.

I'm kind of sad. I had just discovered the channel and the news they do are very well presented. Hope they keep on trucking from South Africa

That really sucks. I'm not familiar with the family/channel but I did/do suffer from a very very mild form of epilepsy that was treatable with a medication called dilantin (Phenytoin) I can't imagine having that level of epilepsy.

To help spread the news, posting here in case any of you might end up missing this.

Another devastating blow to UFD Tech surrounding circumstances ranging from national policies to the pandemic just a year after coming to the USA in the hopes of better care for Brett's son.
Sadly, Reece and Catlin will be heading back to South Africa very soon. Brett says they'll be working remotely. The format and future goals of the channel are yet to be figured out.

Let's all show them the love they deserve and spread the word so we can all say goodbye to the UFD crew in style.
Their 'last' live stream (together, I presume. Hopefully not the last stream, period) will be Oct 30 on Twitch. Link in the video description.

I wish you guys all the best and a hopeful future!

Epilepsy can't be cured as yet. Some forms can be treated and sometimes it can decrease or just go away. Brett's son seems to have a rare form where most of the known treatments aren't really helping so far.

As he mentioned in the video, his son can have up to 100 seizures in just a day. =(

Yep, np! If you have any issues, let me know. Only been able to test on my own two devices, Roku Ultra/3, and a friend's TV, so there's bound to be some sort of issue(s) eventually.

That said, I just pushed another update -- can now browse back further than the latest 20 videos.

    This project is unofficial!
A paid Floatplane subscription is required for proper use.

Was looking for a Roku client/channel, and I couldn't find one, so I wrote this small client.

Supports login via Floatplane only (no legacy LTT forum, nor Discord). 2FA login is supported.
I'm currently working on a few bugs/enhancements, though I work full time, so progress is sparse. Pull requests/bug reports are more than welcome!

    Where Can I Get It?
    Roku
The source can be found on Github (https://github.com/bmlzootown/Hydravion), and it is available via the Roku channel store (https://my.roku.com/account/add/TCXTKHH or https://channelstore.roku.com/details/96a633034fff363b2a194509d75cb966/hydravion).

    Android TV
This will have to be side-loaded for the time being. Feel free to submit any issues over on the Github page:
    https://github.com/bmlzootown/Hydravion-AndroidTV

    tvOS/Apple TV
Still a work in progress, should I ever get the time, but it seems to work just fine in the simulator. To run it, you'll have to sideload the app, though, as I have no paid developer license. Feel free to submit any issues over on the github page:
    https://github.com/bmlzootown/Hydravion-tvOS

Jamamp (Jman012) has been working on a tvOS app (Wasserflug) that looks much better, and has far more functionality, that is currently available on the app store (see Discord for more info). The source is available via Github as well: https://github.com/Jman012/Wasserflug-tvOS

Supporting them other than through the usual LTT routes is a good question. Perhaps after a while when they feel their audience has grown enough, some merch would be nice. ?

I'm personally waiting for Carpool Critics popcorn buckets but a t-shirt or hoodie would suffice. ?

    Cheers!

Did you video the Star Wars podcast? I would love to see it. I am one of the weird ones that watches podcasts  You guys are doing great! If you did a separate subscription on FP for your channel I would subscribe. I know you guys are having to pay for your own tickets, do you all have a way for me to donate to that? The reviews are great. Especially loved the roast of Dolittle. I would like a review of The Mandalorian. I know it isn't a movie, but I still would like to hear your thoughts. The Invisible Man trailer looked interesting it come out Feb 28.  The Lodge is a horror movie that is coming out Feb 7, it is supposed to be good.I can't wait to see A quiet Place 2. It comes out late March and my girl Black Widow in May. So, yeah, those movies. Thanks guys! Keep killing it!

After considering your ram clearance that I think you've answered, according to the specs, you should have about 5mm of space left over with the NH-D15S (160mm) and an H500 (165mm total max) case.

According to various posts on reddit (and here), the Dark Rock Pro 4 (163mm) does actually fit in an H500 (165mm total max) with a bit tighter of a fit at 2mm left to spare. Not sure about ram without searching more. They included pics of it installed in their case: Imgur Photos of Dark Rock Pro 4 in H500 case

Ah I see. I'm actually considering both of these exact coolers for a 3900X system I started buying parts for. For me, whichever I can get for a better price and availability in my area. The NH-D15 chromax black consistently comes in at being more expensive in my area so...

Either will be a good choice.

He said he wasn't actually retiring. He had been thinking about it and has decided to change his mindset about the work and prioritize his family.

He's been going hard for so many years, he's trying to let us know that he'd like to ease off the pedal a little and giving us a heads up before we start to wonder.

He isn't actually leaving as he said in his stream.

Theorica got a reaction from Derkoli in What are the advantages of an Audio Interface over a USB adapter for XLR audio?
Depending on what your motherboard came with, generally, yes, the quality is better. Better DACs, higher bit rates, better control over gain, routing input to external devices and back, phantom power etc. Some come with midi too.

If you plan on just recording your voice (not singing, just spoken) then an external audio interface might be overkill. But if you are recording singing, drums, bass/guitar or anything that requires detailed dynamics then yes, an interface is a good choice. It also offers more flexibility as far as the rest of your equipment goes toward integrating analogue and digital to your computer and DAW or whatever software you plan to use.

I currently use a Steinburg UR-22 as it basically covers all my own needs for my current setup.

    Cheers!

10 million subs is a fairly significant event that is sure to be an emotional ride. I feel privileged that he's shared his feelings. If anything, I think he deserves to do as he wishes without any of us worrying about the business. Him and Yvonne built a damn solid group of individuals who can carry the brand(s)/channels and lighten the load on their shoulders and enter the era of fun instead of stress and long hours.

The work / life balance problem is a very real one and I can totally relate to that.

LTT and friends are some of my few favourite things and will continue to support them.

I'm a single dad of two and when that happened over 10 years ago, Linus and later Luke and everyone else was there and in a very strange way, helped me through some very dark times. What a strange and wonderful thing that is.

My kids both, son and daughter now watch and are finally big enough to wear small sized merch. haha. Guess who's been told he needs to buy some merch again? And that's great!

I don't have to worry about the content in that way because the trust is there and I don't have to worry about the content as far as everything else goes because again, the trust is there. For me, this is pretty special.

So congratulations LTT on 10 million subs! Here's to your love of tech and what you've done with it. I look forward to seeing you, Linus and and the crew at LTX20!

Cheers to him, his family, the LTT team at LMG, Floatplane and the fans! Thanks for all the small and large ways in how you've all been a part of helping me be a better dad. Seriously.

Theorica reacted to RejZoR in Linus on Live Stream (I've been thinking of retiring)
I'd say main reason is that what Linus does with LTT is "industrial" production of videos. It's not like "hey, this graphic card is awesome and I'm gonna make video on it". He (or LTT) is constantly under pressure to provide content on regular basis and that's what always gets you. It goes from hobby that makes you happy and fulfilling to a job that eventually makes you miserable and you start questioning things. It's actually interesting that even though they have so much staff, Linus still appears in like 95% of main channel videos and I bet that's stressful and tiring.

Would certainly understand if he "retires" now and only appears for things he likes and wants to be part of, like something really goofy like watercooling a camera. There are other people who appeared along with Linus and they were pretty cool as presenters of whatever they filmed so I'd be fine with that. They also have personalities just like Linus, some are calm like Anthony and Alex, others are goofy like Riley or James. I'd perfectly understand if he does this and LTT would probably be fine going in the future.

Linus if you're reading this. Just know you've helped so many people. Even though the make wish story was sad, just realize you've impacted so many others when they have been in thier low point in thier life, so never think what you're doing is not important, it is to someone out there who regularly comes back to your channel and just forgot about the problems in thier. That had to be worth it.

It's alright to take a break, but I watch wan show regularly for your commentary, not necessarily for tech news, so if you do take a break, it's your opinion I miss the most, since they've always matched my own, but don't quit, there's not a lot of you in todays age of YouTubers not being truthful to thier audience.

Just remember you'll always be the fact of PC, the one person everyone around links or talks about when talking about tech, you're basically keanu Reeves of PC TECH.

This hits me more because just Sunday I had mentioned about how glad I am LTT had remained constant since the beginning.
