Geekavenger got a reaction from Ratburger08 in No ship in my hangar?
I believe they changed it so you have to do it in game now.  Walk to where you want it now and there is a little HUD icon on the floor.  Select it, and place your ship.

It is about as user friendly as a wood-chipper full of angry badgers, but it is just their first pass at an in game Hanger Management system.  It will get better over time.

Side note this same system is how you can change load-outs on your ship in the PU on the fly.  So for that it works much better.

Geekavenger reacted to Humbug in Star Citizen Kotaku UK article
there was an old interview with Gabe Newell where he said making half life 1 was much more painful than making half life 2. The reason was that they were building the company (Valve) while trying to build a AAA game. So a lot of things in flux. Lot of things were redone as well. But they took their time and got it sorted in the end.

I think a lot of the issues with RSI are traceable to that same fact that they became a very large company very fast so roles, processes and cultures don't always keep up.

seeing how much they have achieved so far, and all the technical hurdles that they have overcome, and what they have demoed in gameplay I feel confident that they will deliver the game.
I just hope it will be as fun to play as it is technically impressive, that's my only real worry.

I have an SC 1070 and although I lke the design of most of the cooler, I have a white and black build so it fits pretty well.  I do understand peoples disdain, so many cards designs just look so "Xtreem" in the worst sense of the (not) word, and EVGA moving in that direction when in the past they have been one of the few sane looking cards is discouraging.  That said compared to Strix or Gigabyte this cooler is much more reserved IMHO.

Going back to the original question...

...Avoid forming bonds with corporate entities who will nor reimburse you for your loyalty. This applies to cases of all color and/or tint.

But seriously. The whole driver thing, whether it's good drivers or bad drivers ebbs and flows. People get up in arms about it, I for one have not encountered a single hitch since March for my use scenarios. Others complain of issues. You have to remember that we're talking about a multitude of system configurations, it's a lottery.

GFE on the other hand I regard as a tool. I'm sorry, but bloatware or no bloatware, Shadowplay is a serious piece of kit if you want to utilize it. The rest of the feature set, I can't say I care much about. Driver updates are optional, there hasn't been any distracting obtrusiveness on my end.

Overclocking will vary as well according to gen. Yes, NV has traditionally overclocked way better these past couple of generations, but Pascal and GPU boost 3.0 is running so hot (as in high) out of the box, you can barely add anything onto aftermarket versions that'll make a dent in performance. In that respect, I still hand it to Maxwell. Serious gains from factory overclocks + manual overclocks. Not to say Pascal is a slouch.

    TL;DR

    Drivers vary
GFE you can use but customize
OCing is "ok" I guess. The only problem is GPU boost 3.0's versatility/tediousness, depends on what you want out of it. You can always just go for the one stop shop curve.

    Other than that, enjoy.

No worries, I really appreciate hearing the bad experiences.  I work in IT so I get that experiences vary based on a lot of factors.  Going in eyes open, knowing people have had these issues is great.  The plan after this advice is to perform a backup prior to swapping my GPU, which should have been my plan anyway.  Regardless I will still try the GeForce Experience, but I will be prepared for this failure point.

A word of advice form me

-Do not install GeForce Experience. It has corrupted my OS twice. It's also cancerous in terms of forcing updates down your throat at the WORST possible time.
-Expect driver instability. Currently Nvidia drivers are worse. Have been since May 19th 2015
    -Nvidia CP will crash
    -No VRM monitoring
-Turn the NvStreamerAgent process off and disable it. It's autoconfigured to stream to a Shield device even if you have no Shield devices and as a result loads your CPU by 5% or so and may cause lower performance in certain situations.

Geekavenger reacted to Kinda Bottlenecked in Joining the Green Team, any advice?
    - Be sure to adjust your monitor colours
    - Make sure that monitor colour is in "full" not "limited" (This will make sure that the colour profile is loaded)
    - Colour profile is loaded a few seconds after boot, a lil different from how it was at AMD
    - Don't be alarmed if your screen flickers when launching a game(its just a driver issue)
    - Multi monitor won't work if you have no drivers installed, so don't be alarmed if you have more than one screen and it goes dark on first boot
    - Nvidia Control panel may crash if you try to use "Manage 3D settings". Download nvidia inspector as a work around
    - No vrm temp reading
    - No Aux voltage control (not really needed)
    - No free games LOL

This is just fan boys trying to one up each other. Both nvidia and radeon have had good drivers and bad drivers.
Historically ATI had terrible drivers (before they were purchased by amd). They were so bad that the open source drivers preformed better. That's no longer the case and both nvidia and amd have had good driver and bad drivers (which they now fix pretty quickly).

That said, both nvidia and amd cards use the same process to overclock just pick your favorite software (precision x, afterburner, etc) and go to.

This is exactly why I pointed that out - I didn't have a back up and thus spent 2 of 6 days reinstalling OSes rather than studying for my exams. Result was - extra stress.

Geekavenger got a reaction from iamdarkyoshi in coil whine question
I am not a materials scientist but my hypothesis is that, since the coil whine is the wire physically vibrating, by running under conditions that cause the vibration for a long period of time you ware out the stiffness in the wire.  The looser coil will still be vibrating but with less rigidity it will make less noise.  So I would speculate that increased temps help this process but the simple fact that the whine is there tells you enough is happening to "burn in" the card.

I never really got the hate for GeForce Experience.  It's actually solved some problems for me and I was never able to attribute any issues to GFE itself.  It's also never "forced an update down my throat" unless a little exclamation mark over the icon in the system tray is forcing me....   I actually find it rather handy that it lets me know an update is available.

I'm also locked into nVidia with my fancy G-sync monitor but that doesn't stop me from using Radeon for family members that don't want to dish out for the premium.  They both have "issues" none of which would be game changers for me.

I've only had 8 nVidia over the past years but I must be lucky because I've never had a corrupted OS just because of a GPU or its related software.  And the only driver instability I encounter is because I try to push the cards too far...

But there is one point that irritates me about my 1070 and the 980ti before it and has persisted for at least 2 years.....  the high core frequency with 144hz monitor while sitting on the desktop with no 3D load.  The 980 ti ran about 980mhz and the 1070 runs at 1500mhz with no load.  The only fix I can find is to turn my monitor refresh down to 120hz. As soon as you hit the "apply" button, the 1070 drops to about 190mhz.   Hotfixes and drivers dont seem to work.

Agreed, sorry I just pulled the quote from you to expand on your reasoning.  And yeah I agree, for some decisions optimizing your costs for a side is just not worth the time.  If he ends up without a computer for 2 weeks so he can net $20 what's the point.  And even then, what if the RX 480 is a dud, to save $20 on something he didn't need is even sillier.

Basically the long and short of it is there is very little benefit to selling the current card now, and much higher risk.

Newbie friendly FPS can be hard to come by.  Battlefield games for sure, the vehicles added to the combat can increase the fun level while learning to aim.  Overwatch is a newer one, again there are classes where you can have fun before your aim gets up to par.  If you want to jump into the deep end then CS:GO for crazy twitch aiming and playing dust2 all the time but the community can be childish and difficult in pubs so find some friends or get aggressive on the mute button.

I only played the Beta solo and had a blast.  That said I also enjoy Pubs in CS:GO (I usually aggressively mute trolls in that case) I didn't have to do any of that in the beta for overwatch.  Most people got the point and played the objective.  I can see how this could be really fun on a well coordinated team but the Beta community was friendly enough and the game is fun even when you are getting rolled by a better organized team (does not happen as often as you would think).

That said, if you are concerned I would wait a few weeks and see how the non-beta community pans out.  It also probably varies region to region and by time of day when talking about pubs though.

The people that complain about bastion haven't played the character at all, turret mode is indeed super powerful but your sitting ducks with no cover doesn't matter where you go to, when you play it often enough Genji is your nemesis, he pops deflection and you ain't careful enough your more that dead, it can even kill every team mate around that isn't a tank, he's also very vulnerable to Junkrat, Roadhog hook and phara. (?) If you play him just camping a corner in turrent mode near the point, your doing wrong and you get picked easily.

What i think is actually OP is Mei, she outplays everyone expect for Tracer, McCree stun and Genji, also her freeze health is bullshit because you can't destroy it even with super high DPS.

I would go one step further and say some games need to be played on their primary input method only.  For Example CS:GO any input method but the M+K is an afterthought.  And in the case of DS anything not a gamepad was an after thought.  I would argue a more traditional M+K RPG Control Scheme would break the game.  One of the key mechanics of the game is that navigating your inventory and menus doesn't pause the game.  The amount of time it takes to scroll through tabs and equip and unequip items is key to the game play.  It makes it inadvisable but not impossible to re-equip mid fight.  More hot keys across the top, or a cursor in the menus changes all of that.

Now the M+K controls are a mess in general for DS but when the developers want you to play with a gamepad why should they put the effort into a control scheme that the rest of the game is not designed around.  If game pad is not for you, period. then I guess Dark Souls is not for you.  But that is on you not the game at that point.

So I guess my point is DS PC Port was a mess, flakey, buggy and a pain in the ass to run.  And FROM deserves all sorts of criticism for that hot mess.  But the game is meant to be played on the game pad if they failed anywhere it was not just explicitly making it a requirement.  Though we all know how much FROM hates explicit instructions ;-)

Believe it or not, some games are better/easier played with a decent game pad controller. I don't know what you have against game pads, but there's nothing wrong with playing a game on a PC using one. I have an Xbox one wireless controller and use it for a few games. (DS series, Witcher series, AC series and maybe a few others (side-scrollers etc.)). For the rest I use M+KB (especially for fps games (K70 and Razer Naga Epic 2014 edition - both not cheap)) and a G27 for racing games.

That's part of the benefit of PC gaming - we can use ANY controller we want.  You don't have to confine yourself to one specific input method.

I didn't buy an expensive M+KB to play on a game pad either. I bought them to play other games and because I wanted quality peripherals (mech KB for typing etc.). I bought the game pad to play certain specific games that work better with a controller, just like I bought the G27 because it works better for racing sims. Plain and simple.

If you didn't like the game, that's fine. But you can't expect all those who do like it to dislike it just because you didn't want to use a game pad. Like several of us have said (and like anyone who is a DS fan will say); the game play/controls for DS are much better using a decent game pad - just like it's better to use a M+KB for an fps game. Confining yourself to only M+KB restricts the overall variety of games you might play/enjoy, IMO.

Play DS1 first to see if you will enjoy the combat.  It is not for everyone, think Monster Hunter but more punishing.  It is all about animation and timing and can be very rewarding.  DS1 can be picked up for next to no money on sale (I think I got it for like $2).

Also be warned the lore is very deep, but very subtle.  You have to play through the first act of the game before getting any coherent direction besides go ring some bells.   While I wouldn't recommend doing a ton of research online about where to go, a little at the start can be very helpful.  My first play through I thought the catacombs was the first area of the game and assumed it was the infamous difficulty of the game, when in fact I had just made a wrong turn.

But as people said it is painful to play on PC due to crummy optimization, get a game pad and blighttown runs at like 5 FPS no matter what.  (also my game pad would not work with my HOTAS Plugged in which was weird and easy to resolve once diagnosed but be aware it can be finicky).
