  1. I found a old hard drive on my basement. No idea what it has. How would I be able to plug this on a modern computer? Looks like this: My computer parts are from 2 years ago, the motherboard does not have these type of cables. I remember these old annoying wide cables that were replaced by SATA, and the power cable isn't also the same. Perhaps there are converters. What type of cables would I need? Current MOBO is GB X570. Cheers.
  2. I see, it's quite confusing. Like, why is it number #5 for sda5_crypt an not just #2? and how would one know that the swap and root partitions are inside the sda5_crypt? it's really clearly indicated. Anyway, I will download the iso and try. I assume the installer is smart enough to set the ideal swap and root partition sizes isn't it? last time I checked it depends on your RAM. I just don't to screw around and not encrypt something in the process or something I will just follow the installer. Thanks for input to both above.
  3. Hi, I want to try Debian 12, to quick questions: -If I select this option, will it encrypt the full drive? Im going to use this option because I don't know how to enter stuff manually: This shows up on this tutorial: So what's going on? only sda5_crypt is encrypted? what about the root, swap and boot volumes? I've heard not encrypting them can leak data. -Which iso should I download? I want to use Xfce desktop. -Will this work with an nvidia GPU? I've heard there are other isos, with some non-free firmware stuff, im assuming im going to need that, if I want to boot with an nvidia GPU. Ideally I would want this with as much free stuff as possible, but im not sure which device would boot that has an open source firmware for everything. I don't want to use Mint, POP_Os etc, those are too bloated with stuff I don't need, this one seems nice and basic, I just need to figure out these things. If anyone knows about this please let me know.
  4. I accidentally removed a bunch of pictures. Quickly clicked cancel but it already deleted quite a bit. Could these be recovered? I tried Recuva but it doesn't recognize my phone. I saw some software called "Dr Fone" but I think it needs root. Also im not sure if it's even possible since the SD card is encrypted. Do I just stop wasting time with this and assume the files are gone?
  5. So which is the best way to go about this? what about this software? https://iteroni.com/watch?v=9Fz7Xa-M8BQ or https://iteroni.com/watch?v=e6e5XDLaYRo
  6. If you wanted to for instance download this entire forum, with every thread, post, image etc and be able to browse it online.. how do you do this properly so you get 1:1 copy with all the scripts and so on?
  7. I have never used google, I use startpage. Im doing research on Coreboot.
  8. Im doing research. Also it's not a conspiracy, this is well documented, look it up.
  9. Those are the last laptops without the NSA ware chips installed. I would like to study them. Link contains Intels past 2012, not good.
  10. Can I possible get some sort of list where I can get the best laptops of these eras for research purposes? Also, would using a Pentium 4 laptop pose any risks assuming you use an updated OS? (many good Linux distros that are compatible with old hardware)
  11. I have tried running gsmartcontrol but SMART stuff on the disk is empty. No error logs, no available test, anything. SMART test stuff also greyed out in gnome-disks How do test the health of the SSD then? I was only able to run this command: $ sudo smartctl -d scsi -H /dev/sdb And it said SMART health status OK, as seen here: https://linoxide.com/how-to-test-ssd-hdd-health-in-linux/ Notice that for some reason I had to specify the disk as scsi otherwise nothing else worked. Anyway, all other commands it doesn't work. It runs the self-test but I cannot even print any logs or anything because it says the disk doesn't allow for it. So im not sure what to do to check the health of the disk and discard it's not faulty even if it's brand new. Edit: I installer Samsung Magician which is a tool to check SSD health and clicked on SMART and there I can see the SMART stuff and all rows say OK. So the drive is OK?
  12. https://www.reddit.com/r/pop_os/comments/lmb3b1/io_error_while_writing_superblock/ Im getting the same error. Any ideas? Im gonna run gsmartcontrol and hopefully it has no errors because it's brand new, box sealed.
  13. Hi, I bought a Samsung T7 2TB and installed the PureOS Linux distro. I applied updates, it was running fine then as I was on my desktop (I plugged it into the laptop because for some reason PureOS does not work in my desktop even tho the Live CD worked but no the install, I heard it may be the drivers) it went to a screen with a lot of command line stuff, so looks like a GUI crash. Some I/O errors while writting a superblock or something, and I also remember: irq 19: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option) Then it was stuck with some "watchdog" error. Anyway, I shut the computer down, I try to boot again and im scared because the drive is not showing up anymore on the BIOS on both the desktop and the laptop. I have plugged it on Windows and it seems to be showing up on the disk management, but not on the BIOS... what should I do? The PureOS install was encrypted with luks, so not sure. But nontheless, the drive should show up on boot menu. I don't get it. Any ideas?? Should I try installing another distro? I really liked this one because it's with privacy on mind and had a nice and simple debian setup. Any alternatives? Also how can I check that either my SSD or the laptop may be causing this before I go on testing with another distro? EDIT: I have just tested again and now the drive shows up again, im testing on my laptop.... overheating? who knows. Im worried I permanently damage it now. Perhaps anyone knows where can I find the log from the previous crash so I can post it? Thanks
  14. I bought this one and it's brand new. I plug it and there's nothing showing up. Damn. Not a single USB port works. Case is Fraktal R6. Tried on both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, not working. Im using the included USB cable. I have checked on disk management. The disk is not there. The blue LED is on tho so at least it's not dead. It's just not showing up. Why is that?? Im on Windows 10 btw
