    Decided I wanted a new case, a few days later and most of the bits for my first custom loop have arrived too. Been a pretty expensive week ?

    My latest hunk of junk to play with is this heap, an Old Dell Poweredge2900 that I pinched from the scrap pile at work. For under £35 I've chucked in 2 x Xeon x5365's and upped it to 20GB of 667Mhz DDR2 RAM ?.

    It's currently got 5 x 74GB 15k SAS drives in it but I might swap a few of them out and keep two for the OS and then chuck six 2TB SATA drives and use it as a media server or something along those lines. It also has an old DAT72 tape drive, although from looking at the dust inside that drive I don't think it would work even if I wanted it to.

    Managed to get it to run Server 2012 after a bit a faffing around so bought it a little more up to date than it's original 2003 R2 install. I initially went to reinstall 2003 but then realised I'd need a floppy disk for the RAID controller drivers so had to jump ahead a bit to the later versions where Windows can deal with that itself. I can't even remember the last time I had floppy disks.

    Just run Cinebench R15 and on the multicore score I think it did alright and scored 538, the single core was a pitiful 74 though haha. To put that in perspective my OC i5 8600k at 5Ghz got 1185 for the multi-core and my Skylake era dual-core G4400 only got 247. I know with the two CPU's it's running at 8 cores but for a pair of processors that I picked up for peanuts I think that's pretty respectable.

    It's currently running R20 but think it's going to be a while.

    Plus I still love the sound old servers make when you fire them up, my cat shit herself when all the fans kicked in and it sounded like it was gonna take off!

    Annoyingly, I can't find anywhere on it to show it's power consumption although I'm going to guess it's probably in the 300W range even when at idle.

    Doubt it will get anywhere but I've just contacted Maxon to ask for their reasons for only wanting to use the Windows/Apple stores and if they've even realised that this will isolate some of their long-time users, risking a backlash from the tech community who are just waiting for the next issue to throw their opinionated weight behind?

    My Acer monitor annoys me with this, the actual bezel is only about 2mm around the top and sides but then the black 'border' within the screen is another 5mm or so ?

    If you look at the Steam hardware survey it shows the breakdown of OS types used by Steam users;

    Whilst the majority are Win10, there are still plenty of people using other versions. As per the above though, you're better off getting Win10 due to the ongoing support and updates (ignoring the possible complications that come with Win 10 updates haha).

    of course you don't, as long as you've got Win 10 Pro so it allows file sharing etc then you're good to go. Setup the machine, share the drive and map it on any other computers you want to access it from.

    FreeNAS etc use far less system resources etc and will run on a potato but if the computer is capable of running Win 10 as normal then it's fine as a NAS

    Easy;
    1. Turn on mobile hotspot on your phone
    2. Connect laptop to phone network instead of the schools
    3. Game as much as you want
    4. Get huge phone bill for the data you've used

    I've had a couple of x370 boards do this and in the end both got RMA'd and sent back. Similar thing where it would light up for a couple of seconds and then do nothing, no post or anything.

    Have you got any spare parts you can use to rule out any of your parts?

    I definitely had a similar problem, there's far too many variables to say for sure but it does sound similar. If it's all new parts then it doesn't matter which one it is as they'll both be under warranty.

    Thiunk your best bet will be to contact MSI about replacing the mobo, depending on their policy it'll either be a direct return to them or return it to where you bought it from for them to replace.

    Is anyone else finding their scores on R20 are very consistent? I've just got the same 2844 score five times in a row yet on R15 my best score was 1185 but when running it repeatedly it would fluctuate by up to about 100 points or so over the course of a few runs.

    Not sure what's being going on the last day or so, my numbers seem a bit all over the place. Usually my figures are between about 80k and 130k for each 3 hour period but had a couple of very low ones and the one very high one. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could have caused this, all my systems are running constantly and not aware of anything that could have caused quite such a drop. Don't know where the high one came from either, could understand it coming after a low one if the figures hadn't quite registered right but seems weird that it came directly before a very low one.

    On a slightly different note, I was desperately hoping that I could hit a million PPD but think that 992k is the closest I'm gonna get, I've thrown everything I can at it but with only a GTX1070 and a GTX750ti I don't think it matters how many CPUs I throw at it I won't quite get there. This is with 21 CPUs and I really can't manage any more than that. On the upside, I'll slow things down after this as like many others I'm having gaming withdrawal symptoms haha. All the office CPUs that are going and the 750ti will keep going (at least until I get caught at work) but my 1070 and 8600k are desperate for some Assassin's Creed Odyssey, some Forza and maybe even some Fifa (please don't hate me for that last one haha).

    Congrats to @Ben Quigley on getting the 1080 as well. Couldn't think of anyone more deserving after the work you've put in on this side of things.
