  1. Hey all! I've had this hard drive for awhile and I had it installed vertically for about couple of years. Recently (though I don't know exactly when it started) I started hearing noises coming from my HDD. It's not a ticking noise, but rather a scraping noise when the disc is spinning. It doesn't happen all the time and the drive still works but it's still a cause for concern. This had me wondering if having it installed this way mattered at all. I will be replacing it regardless and was planning on placing it vertically again (I think it looks great in the Thermaltake View 31 case, but that's just about the only reason) but wanted to ask if vertical mounting an HDD has any effect on its longevity/lifespan, or the issue was with any other factors.. HDD is installed on a sled/caddy with all four screws and is on a vertical slot on the case that fits the sled. It was purchased on September 2018 through Amazon so it was delivered. As you see in the picture, it is a WD Blue 4TB one, and it was moved from my old case to the current one on January 2020. It is also partitioned to two separate logical drives. For its replacement, I was looking to get a NAS drive as I generally understand them as more reliable, but I had some lingering questions about them. I will not be using this drive in a server/NAS set up so does it matter? I do still want to consider it if it'll still last longer than regular HDD. Also, all of these NAS drives that I found advertise that they are designed for 24/7 operation and with vibration tolerance from other HDD, but I will just be using it on a regular PC that I turn on and off at least once on a daily basis, and without any other HDD in the case. Would doing so have an opposite effect and could actually be worse on these drives? Sorry for the long post and please do let me know if there are any bad practices with what I did. Also if there are any recommendations, I'll take them too! Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
  2. Nah, if anything, it's louder because the two fans I added is running at a high RPM. I've always believed that lower temp is better so instead of having it run at 80-83 all the time, if I can help cool it a bit, I thought it would be worth it. I must say though, honestly thought it was gonna have a bigger impact, but now that I have it set up, didn't want to take it all down because it wasn't as effective as I originally thought. It still does something and I'm okay with that for now.
  3. I'd say I have a pretty decent rig, the one people might say "it's just about all you need" with Ryzen 5 2600X and GTX 1070 Founder's Edition. With the current COVID-19 situation, I started folding@home to lend my computer power, but as you may have noticed, I have a Founder's Edition graphics card. I do really like the look of it, but it doesn't do as well in the cooling department with the single blower style fan. While folding, the temperature hangs out around 80 degrees, but has gone up as high as 83. Which reminded me of the very first LTT video I ever saw (and what got me into this mess): That video was a cringe to watch even when I didn't know anything about computer hardware and what a Titan was. However, that got me thinking. I'm not trying to make my card into a single slot card. Could I just take the cooling component of this video? This is my original rig without any "modifications" that was about to happen. I have 2 additional Riing 14 fans in the front of the case (not shown), 1 in the back, and 2 corsair ML 120 fans up at the top pushing air out. As you may have noticed also, I have 2600X with double fan setup of Noctua NH-U12S (in their best fan color) which is more than enough even under load. Especially since my GPU doesn't pump out hot air into the case, the fans at the top is practically being useless, so I decided to put them to use. For those with allergic reaction to jank, please hit the back button on your browser. This entire "procedure" took about an hour to complete and to "perfect," including the intake fan being held up by a spare SSD. The big question now is, was it worth it? I think so. It doesn't make it run any faster (since I didn't do anything to it to boost clock speed or anything) but it does run 6-7 degrees cooler. There is almost no air leaking so it is definitely pumping cool air into it, and the back fan pumps out warm air nicely. It won't be a permanent solution (or it might be if I get lazy to take it down) but it definitely works and I'll have it up for at least awhile to help my poor GPU even a little bit while it works to make the world a better place. Finally, going back to the title of the post... If LTT has taught me one thing... Thank you for reading this journey.   4. Hello everyone I recently bought two more sticks of ram and popped them into my rig (described below) and started getting BSODs and chrome would crash. This used to never happen when I only had 2 sticks of ram (2x8GB) but it started happening once I made the upgrade. At some point, I disabled DOCP and it has not happened again, but I only did it recently so I'm not sure if it will happen sometime in the future. I was wondering if anyone in the community may know if having 4 sticks of ram and DOCP on has a possibility of crashing and unstability? I am happy to leave DOCP off and run it at 2133 as it doesn't give me a noticeable difference in every day use, but would like to figure out what was causing the issue. Attached are some BSOD screens that I was able to capture.. I have gotten it couple of more times prior to it, but wasn't ready to take a picture or take a note of the code. Computer specs CPU: Ryzen 5 2600X Mobo: Asus Prime B450-Plus GPU: GTX 1070 Founder's Edition Ram: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 32 GB 3000MHZ, 15-17-17-36. (2x8GB originally, now 4x8GB. All 4 ram sticks are exactly the same except for two of them has version 5.22 and the other two has 5.32. Currently running without DOCP) All other settings on the BIOS is auto. Please let me know if I've missed any information that is needed. Thank you for your help.
  5. Thanks for the help! Thought it was Aura sync related, but found out there is a separate led option in bios. It has now been disabled. Unfortunately, I do not play pubg... Sorry I can't be of help with that I could be very biased because I am upgrading from improperly cooled MSI GE62 with i7-4720HQ @ 2.6 GHz and GTX 960M, but i think everything runs very good. I know the higher end PCs are pushing 5GHz+, but I'm still not used to seeing the constant 4GHz+ on all 6 cores (especially since the aforementioned laptop doesn't even hit 3GHz anymore). Now that I've built it, I think I might prefer a smaller case, and the motherboard only has 6 holes for screws (the right side is just few millimeters short of the right ATX standoffs. When plugging in the 24 pin for power and SATA cables, this motherboard has no support on that side). Wraith spire cooler is quieter than I was expecting, and the Samsung EVO 970 is really snappy (I would sometimes miss BIOS setup because it was too fast to boot). I have a few benchmark results that I did when I first built it. Hope this helps!

  7. Hello all I finished my first build a week ago and has been wondering what this orange light on the motherboard is and if I should be concerned. The computer works perfectly fine with all ram, storage and gpu detected. If it is something that can't be helped, I guess it is what it is, but this orange color is somewhat tarnishing the "black-and-white" ish theme I was planning to go with. The computer has: CPU: Ryzen 5 2600X + Wraith Spire cooler Mobo: Asus Prime B450-Plus Ram: Corsair Vengeance DDR4-3000 (2x8GB) white GPU: NVidia Geforce GTX 1070 Founder's Edition Storage: Samsung 970 EVO 240GB (Boot drive) Kingston A400 SSD Seagate Firecuda 1TB HDD Power: Corsair CX650M Case: Deepcool DUKASE 2 Any help would be appreciated.
