will unplugging a psu multiple times (the cord from the psu) damage it? i’m asking because my stepdad tends to take my power cords during the week and i need to know if it will damage the psu in any way so i can ask him not to

From my limited knowledge, I'd say it might wear out the pins, not sure tho

Any socket/plug has a limited lifespan, but something as bulky and simple as that I would think would last far more times than anyone would ever be able to discover.  Hell, if something as tiny and delicate as micro USB B can last, what was it, 50k cycles?  I'm sure you will be fine.

yeah... about that @Ryan_Vickers... there's something else

it's the same that happens with the power button, it will clear the capacitors, which reduces the lifespan

    at least iirc

Hm, I'd be interested to hear more about that from someone who deals with this stuff in detail on a regular basis.  My gut reaction would be that there's no way that would matter as capacitors are generally used in situations where they are filling and discharging (even if it's only a small amount) constantly while the device is in use, so one more cycle shouldn't matter, but maybe it does...

again, it could be something else

but i thought it was that

Considering we're talking about high voltage AC I'd be more worried about the erosion of the contacts. This can lead to progressively more and more sparking/arcing and inevitably complete failure (fire). Also if he's not particularly gentile with it he could damage the copper wire inside the cable near the connector leading to again fire.

If he really needs a cable those things cost $2~3/piece. Buy a new one for yourself and give him the old one and tell him to fuck off with it.

okay thanks for all the answers, i will just tell him that it is not supposed to be removed, and if he does i will bend a pin and tell him it was because of him and make him buy me a new (and better) PSU by saying "this is the one you ruined, it is just that they changed how it looks now"

IMO it depends how long its not connected.

If we're talking about many days not connected, it makes sense.

If we talk about a couple of hours, then it doesn't. IMO 8h is the point where it makes sense, the more the more sense it makes...
