can check out video by GN on this topic if you want to get more details but yeah its fine. most hardware doesnt care about the 30-75 C range its all the same except when youre running at the edge of an OC which an SSD is not doing.

all 7th gen Intel CPU's work on all 6th gen mobos, as long as you have an updated BIOS.
8th gen CPU's are not compatible with 6th or 7th gen mobos.

@DoogleGrand  What's your budget for the upgrade? What are you hoping to do with the system? Gaming? If so, what games and what settings.

on most laptops only one M.2 slot is pcie speeds the other is sata so thats something to consider, I looked on the lenovo website for your laptop and i think yours is like that ( https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-x/ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-6th-Gen/p/22TP2TXX16G its under techspecs) so check what speed you current ssd, if its pcie speed I would get a 1tb samsung 860 evo, if its sata speeds get what ever 970evo you can afford

It does not work, the only increase in their boost frequencies you can possible make having in mind they are Locked processors is overclock the BCLK if you have a Z370/390 motherboard keeping original turbo boost multipliers.

That means the best you can do with the i7 8700 is have it go from the stock 4.289 (4.3ghz) to 4.425~4.445 all cores boost with a BCLK of 102.75~102.85 higher base clock than that the new micro-code implemented in Kaby Lake era will not allow it to boot.

This is how it looks like:
    Single Core is of 192~193

I still wouldn't get the msi armor card, get the XFX Gts XXX 580 card its the highest clocking stock card and has amazing thermals, get a 1tb HDD instead and spend the saving on the better card trust me you wont be sorry.
also get dual channel ram instead of the single stick, ryzen likes dual channel a lot more and are basically same price.
and are you going to try overclock past 4Ghz if not don't need to extra cooler.

the Auto on CPU Core/Cache Voltage should have a drop down where you can change it to Manual, once you set Manual you will then get a box where you can type in the voltage you want.

Picklestine reacted to Daniel644 in Overheating?
you should overclock and lower your voltage, or just turn off auto voltage and start manually setting the voltage lower and lower until you get unstable then bump it back up, there are many guides online for overclocking.

since you have an ASUS board, go into the BIOS and go to the Advanced Mode, in the Advanced Mode is a tab called either AI Tewaker or Extreme Tweaker, as you scroll down through there you will find a setting called "CPU Core/Cache Voltage" and it will be set to Auto, switch it to Manual and set it to 1.2v if you are running at stock clocks, save and apply changes and reboot to windows, if it fails to boot go back into the BIOS and bump it up to 1.21v, if it does boot into Windows and is stable running Benchmark tests then you can go back and try dropping lower in 0.005v increments until you find the lowest voltage the computer is stable at, might take a few hours playing with it and running stress tests while monitoring temps, but you should see a fairly massive temp reduction if you don't Overclock. at stock speeds you may be able to get as low as 1.15v, but 1.2v seems to be the high end of the spectrum for stock clocks depending on how good your chip is.

liquid metal is still slighty better like said above but it wont be a 20'c drop like replace intel standard thermal paste.
and yeah thermal grizzly kryonaut should be good i was going to use it till i manned up and went liquid metal haha

enjoy it!, I did after my delid (for a while) tbh, I wouldnt suggest anyone to delid their cpu right away, nor delid if you are using an air cooling (because its so damn hard to find the correct pressure using intels stock cpu retention mechanism), also if anyone plans to delid you dont need to use liquid metal, almost everything performs better than stock intel tim that is 6+ months old.
    /end drunk rant.

Asus, gigabyte, msi, evga are probably the most popular brands. Evga and asus in my opinion make some of the best cards for extreme overclocking atm and they just make great cards in general too
