For budget I was thinking something along the lines of £500 including the HDDs but less than that would be great of course. I think that the 3.5" bays is a must but the 2U isn't a huge deal since I would have probably had to get at least a 4U rack for it. 12 bays seems like that would be way more than i need to be honest. If I was going by my current plan I would probably need no more than 8 if I was leaving expansion room. I would also be pretty interested in a Synology if that would do the trick in a smaller form factor.

I am planning on keeping the server in my garage so noise isn't a big deal. Do you think the R710 would do the job I want and give me a little bit of room for future projects? As for something more modern, would you be able to link me to a couple of motherboards/pre built machines that you would consider for this?

Thanks, I looked into PROXMOX and that is exactly what I need. What I am trying to figure out next is what hardware to go for. I was originally thinking of building it from scratch but there also seems to be lots of options on eBay. I was looking into the Dell PowerEdge R710. Below are the specs from the listing: Brand: Dell Model: R710 3.5" 6 Bay CPU: X5650 x 2, 2.66GHz, Six core CPU Memory: 48GB of RAM - PC3 10600R Storage: NO HDD included 6 x 3.5" caddy with screws included Power: 2 x Redundant 870W PSU Perc 6i Raid Card with battery iDrac6 ENT Obviously I would need to buy a rack for mounting also. I can get one of these for £200 and then it would just be a matter of filling it with drives. My current thoughts on that are: Seagate 2TB Ironwolf HDD x3 Western Digital Green 120 GB Internal SSD M.2 SATA x1 - I would need to buy an adaptor card for this to work I believe? Seagate 500GB HDD - I have one of these lying around so may as well use it What do you think of this?

Thanks for the responses - really appreciate it. So what I should be able to do is build a server (I'm still working on a parts list) and then use a hypervisor as the "base OS" and then divide the segments up as I like?

Hi all, I'm trying to get some advice on how to build a home server. My main question is whether I should combine a NAS with a separate home server to get to my ideal solution or whether it would be better to have everything stored in one machine and then use VMs to create each segment. Below are my main requirements: NAS: Storing movies, GOPRO footage, photos etc (Currently thinking 4TB with upgrade potential when needed) Considering the photos and footage, I would like to maintain some level of redundancy to ensure the data won't be lost due to a drive failure Plex Server: Fairly standard requirements for a Plex server SQL Server: I am a SQL developer by trade so would be useful to have a permanent home implementation I am working on a homemade PiNest and want to capture the data to a SQL server to do analysis Future Ideas: Home security I have been looking into a number of videos and blog posts but I can't quite tell what the best solution is. What I would like to ask is whether it would be a good idea to have all of this one one machine and use VMs to separate the different segments or would it be a better idea to build the home sever and get a separate NAS to connect to it? Thanks very much

Hi everyone, I apologize if this question has been asked before but I am having a bit of trouble with my XPS 13. The laptop is fantastic for the most part but the sleep mode seems to cause a really big drain on the battery. Now the only point of reference I have is the Macbook Pro retina that I switched from. When the lid was closed on it I could come back hours later and very little battery had been drained but the XPS battery seems to drain really quickly and I am wondering if there is a simple way to fix it. I did a bit of a Google search and it looks like quite a few people have encountered this but I couldn't find an obvious fix. If anyone has a good idea of how to solve the issue please let me know. Thanks very much. Richard

Thanks for the quick reply! That looks very promising. If I were to do any form of overclocking it would be very slight so I don't think that would be an issue. Is there any of advice you can think of that may be helpful?

Hi all! So I have had my current PC for years now and I have made some upgrades along the way. The problem is I have been using an ATX case which is extremely bulky in the room that it is currently in and to get around this problem I would like to move to a micro ATX case. Originally I wanted to go all out and go mini ITX but as I did a bit of research I didn't easily find a mini ITX motherboard to take my CPU as well as potentially hold two 3.5" HDD. The parts that I currently own and want to move into the new case are as follows... AMD FX-4100 CPU MSI R9 290 GPU 600W PSU 120GB SSD Since my current motherboard is an ATX motherboard I will not be able to include it in the switch to the micro ATX case. My budget for the motherboard and case together is around £100 but I am willing to be a little flexible with the budget if it means I can get much better value. I was looking at the Thermaltake Versa H15 case for this switch. The main reasons I am looking at this case in particular is because it is cheap but it also has a window. The next challenge is the motherboard that I will need to switch to to which can accommodate my current CPU and also fit into the case. This is the part I'm currently struggling with. Unfortunately it has been a while since I have really looked at motherboards and I'm honestly a little lost. I know my FX CPU is AM3+ socket but I have no idea what micro ATX motherboards can support that. It would also be great if the motherboard had SATA 3 instead of SATA 2. Additionally I am thinking I may pick up the Corsair H80i V2 to cool my CPU instead of the bulky Arctic Freezer 13 that is currently in my PC. It would also be great if I could fit my two 3.5" HDD which hold the bulk of my media etc. If anyone would have any good ideas of what motherboard I could pick up that would be really helpful and greatly appreciated. I would also appreciate comments on future upgrades I could make. Thanks very much!!

Razer Blade 2014 vs Razer Blade Stealth
Nettot replied to Nettot's topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Don't suppose there is any news about the Stealths UK release that I am not aware of? I really like the idea of the Stealth but I was seeing the Blade 14 at around £600 which looks like a pretty good deal. -
Hi everyone, So I live in the UK and I am currently waiting on the Razer Blade stealth to be released so that I can invest in it and get rid of my macbook pro. Whilst browsing the net I noticed that there are plenty of people selling their old Razer blade 2014 (I imagine to get the new Blade 2016). So really the question is would I be better buying a used Razer Blade 2014 14" or would it be better to hold out for a new Razer Blade Stealth? I don't do anything other than light gaming (Hearthstone, Football Manager, Rocket League). I know I don't really need the power of the Razer Blade 2014 but I like having the extra horse power just in case. Anyway if anyone could get back to me on this it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I have decided that with my next paycheque I need to upgrade my keyboard. Obviously there is a ridiculous amount of choice which is why I am jumping on here for some help. I have never owned a mechanical keyboard but I have wanted one for quite a while but I just didn't know what type to get plus I didn't want to part with the additional cash for one. First off I am willing to spend around £70-80 max and I want Cherry MX Brown switches because I like the idea of them being a bit more silent and I don't do a huge amount of gaming so I don't feel like I need Cherry MX Red switches. I have also just put a sofa into my bedroom so I would really like the option of the keyboard being wireless so that I can chill out a bit more easily instead of having to stretch wires across my room. Other features that I would like but are not necessarily needed are the following: Backlit keys Number pad Media controls Anyway I think that is quite enough of me rambling on about the features I would like, if anyone has any good suggestions let me know as pay day is quickly approaching!! Thanks

Yea I would want it to have a wifi dongle so that it is able to do it all on its own.

Ha! Thanks, there was me thinking I had a fairly original idea and there it goes. I will look into it but I may still have a bash at creating it on my own for fun. Thanks
