I had a WD 250gb Blue SATA ssd in there when I was trying all this out, and every time I installed a new OS I made sure to wipe all the partitions and essentially start over from scratch (I never zeroed out the drive to be fair). It does not let me delete the other boot options, only deselect them (on my working e6430 board) but on my e6420 the issue persists even with no drive installed (sata, usb, sd card or msata) so the only storage left is the ROM, therefore I can't think of anything else being the issue. Also the computer freezes before it gets to the point of requesting data from a drive. It freezes before I can even enter the BIOS
  2. Hey everyone! Hope you're all doing well Its been years since my last time here but just like back then, I am unable to find an answer anywhere else so I am once again summoning the PC gods using this forum as the catalyst. I've actually been wanting to make this post for a while but I never got the opportunity, so some of the details might be iffy but I will be as clear as I can. So I received a Latitude e6420 2nd-gen i5 a few months back. I then decided to use it as almost like a test bench to try out different OS's and software, particularly Linux as I'd been using Windows PC's my entire life. As I was messing around with different distros trying to get the hang of it I came upon Fedora and ZorinOS (I settled on ZorinOS Lite for my older laptops) and I was going back and forth between the 2, uninstalling and reinstalling each OS as I got new ideas to try out. While I was trying to boot into ZorinOS at one point my BIOS switched itself over to MBR randomly (I thought it not weird considering I have a latitude e6430 i5 breadboard that resets the BIOS every time the power goes off due to the BIOS battery not holding charge(I live in south africa so our power goes off 2 or 3 times a day)) and when I tried to boot it gave me the typical "not supported" screen. So I go into the BIOS and switch from Legacy to UEFI, and suddenly I get 4 different boot options even though I only have 1 boot drive. I was somewhat able to recreate this on my e6430 board (see picture). Unsure of what was going on, I figured that since there is no Fedora, Ubuntu or Windows installed the BIOS would just skip over those, so I applied the settings and rebooted the machine. After that, every time I turn on the computer, with or without a boot drive installed, the machine POST's for a second, and then flashes the Dell logo for a split second then it freezes. Or it freezes on the Dell logo. I tried rebooting endless times, spamming F2 to at least try and get into the BIOS but it freezes every time before I get that far. The machine also sounds like it runs normally and it doesn't turn itself off or force any restart at any point, its almost like it's fully booted into... something. I've never encountered this issue before and my software knowledge is not the best, so my best guess is somehow the USB boot drive created some kind of shell on the BIOS (Windows Boot Manager) and whenever the computer starts it loads into that shell or something. I can't think of anything else but a corrupted BIOS but like I said I don't know as much as a dev. The only solution I can think of is a BIOS flash but that won't help me if the problem doesn't lie there. So I decided to ask the reliable brainiacs on here for their opinion. Any insight will help me. Like I said this happened months ago but I am only posting about it now since I haven't had the opportunity before and I might actually need this machine in the foreseeable future. If I can fix the machine without spending money on a BIOS flash then please, enlighten me! Thank you for reading through my essay by the way. I appreciate it

  4. Well, no. I want to remove the shroud since thats how you remove the heatsink. I found that much info on the internet but no one has done a proper teardown of this card. I would use compressed air but I don't have that. Might consider a vacuum cleaner right about now
  5. Hey guys. So I recently bought a gtx 1070 sc2 and it seems the previous owner never made the effort to clean it. I'm attempting to do so myself but I find it hard to remove the fan shroud, which is necessary to reach the heatsink. I looked everywhere and tried a bunch of different searches but no luck. If someone can possibly explain to me how this is done or maybe link me to a previous thread, article or video that discusses this topic, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't wanna waste my 1070 when I haven't even put it in my system yet.

  7. So after some more digging and restarts it seems that every time I start the pc up it throttles, and when I check Clock Modulation it returns to normal. I tried checking the box and clicking Turn On then restarted. No results. How can I finalise this, and what is actually happening?
  8. It seems to work fine now. Strange cuz all I did was check and uncheck both Clock Modulation and Chipset Modulation and it shot back to 3GHz for some reason. I'm not complaining.
  9. All right I tried to use the Throttlestop method. When I ran the app it said that both Clock Modulation and Chipset Clock Modulation were 100.0%. BD PROCHOT was checked tho so I unchecked it and saved. Screenshots of before and after I saved: I can definitely see the cpu is throttling since its only running at 800MHz
  10. So here's the deal. I have a Dell Latitude E6430 with a i5-3320m and Intel HD4000 and 8GB DDR3 RAM. Last weekend my cousin gave me a nice pc case that I fixed up for him, but its specs were horrendous(AMD Athlon 64 x2, 1GB DDR2 RAM, it didn't even have a proper GPU). What was of noticeable value was that it was sporting 3 fans. So I got the "brilliant" idea of putting my laptop motherboard in this case, since it was suffering from overheating when I was playing games (Soulworker, Tales of Zestiria etc.) and this would undoubtfully help. So I took apart my laptop and found a nice fit for the mobo. The idea was to still use the laptop's display with the mobo in a seperate case since I don't have another display, and this, surprisingly, turned out quite well. I put the laptop chassis back together and it looks exactly like it did before, save for the wifi and LCD cables sticking out of the LAN and mic ports respectively. I connected the psu up to the 3 fans and they all started. Excellent. So I plug the mobo in via the charging cable and turn it on. It tells me the BIOS date and time is out(had to remove the CMOS) so I load the default values and continue. Upon reaching my desktop I notice 2 things: My CPU fan isn't working. It didn't bother me since I have 3 other fans, one of which is blowing directly onto the heatsink. Second thing I notice is that my CPU usage is 100%(I have a Rainmeter floating icon on my desktop that tells me the CPU, RAM and SWAP usage). I googled around and tried everything that I came up to, nothing worked. Task Manager shows my CPU usage as between 0 and 20%, while the floating icon shows my CPU idling at 40%. What's strange is that in Task Manager the disk usage and the floating icon's CPU usage is identical, so I googled how to reduce disk usage, and once again tried everything that I saw necessary. It reduced disk usage, but the floating icon still shows my CPU idling at 40%. I take the floating icon to be the correct indicator since when I tried to play a 1080p BD 10bit HEVC video, the video track lagged. Badly. Whereas the day before I smoothed it over. Even the navigation in Explorer and the desktop lags, similar to a pentium 4 I once had. I'm running the newest build of Windows 10 if someone could help me I would deeply appreciate it, with the CPU usage mainly. I have a theory tho, ridiculous as it may be: I decided that since I'm still gonna use this case when I upgrade to proper pc parts, I'm not gonna make extra holes in it. Instead I opted for cable ties. Could the screws have some sort of grounding function for the CPU? As for the fan, I went into Legacy BIOS and under thermal log it simply said Fan 1 stopped. I hope the right person reads this since I wanna fix this as soon as possible. Thanks and regards.
