Not that I'm really savvy about the technicality of what you're trying to do, but if I can power up my PWM fan directly by molex using a 4pin to Molex adapter, I don't see why you can't leave the Tach & PWM cable unused.

    edit :
Mind you, the lowest voltage is IIRC around 5-6v, lower than that the fan likely won't spin.
    See @tkitch reply directly below.

Honestly I kinda want to see Linus daily drive a Sony phone. IMO Samsung needs to be taken down a few pegs. I keep seeing "Samsung exclusive" WAY too often for a phone OS platform that's supposed to be "open". Like, who do they think they are? Apple?

I've been using an Xperia 5 II since it came out in the US and I think it's a great phone. For me, I have a few "must haves" and it checks all the boxes for me, a headphone jack and stereo speakers being two of the things Linus mentioned.

They don't have a folding phone yet, which I'm sure Linus will be disappointed about, but besides that, I think Sony phone won't be a bad option.

i appreciate your concern. and also i fully agree with this video. we will not be using the tablet as a babysitter and he will not be on it all day either. he currently gets 1 hour of screen time a day, he decides when he can spend that time, and he usually doesn't use it all in one go. he gets bored after a while and goes back to playing with his toys. he usually watches construction trucks, garbage truck, or train compilations on the TV. games on this tablet will count towards that 1 hour max. the exception will be in June when my family and i will be traveling (flying) to europe. during the 16 hour flight we need to keep him occupied and the tablet will be one tool of many. we will also be bringing other toys, and lots of books. (he loves books) the tablet can also be used for him to listen to music on his bluetooth headphones. something he already does, except we play the music through our (my wife and i) phone.

RDR2 seems to be the newest and hardest to run game so lets go with that. according to the video linked, you will be getting 60-90 FPS with the 3060 at 1080p. the 3060 TI is about 30%-40% faster. so about 80-120fps. thats still below the 144 Hz of your monitor. that being said, that is at maxed out settings. you can easily increase the frames to 144 by turning down a few settings. with the 3060 you will have to turn down more settings than the 3060 ti, but not that much more. the other games on your list should be easier to run and thus dont have to lower the settings much, if at all.

your best bet is to go to youtube and type the name of the game you want to play, the name of the card (3060 or 3060 ti), and 1080p into search. there should be plenty of videos showing what frames they get at maxed out settings. then you can make your own decision to see if the faster 3060 TI is worth the extra cash to you.

sorry i could not give you a more direct answer.

both CPUs will play all the games you mentioned without breaking a sweat. so both the i5 and the ryzen5 are great options. get whatever you can get the cheapest (including the cost of the motherboard). a ryzen 7 5800x is not that much faster for gaming, especially the games you mention. the extra 2 cores will be great for productivity (blender, CAD, adobe products....), but not needed for games. so for you i would say that the ryzen 7 is overkill.
as for laptop vs desktop; unless you need mobility, get a desktop. they last longer and are more powerful than a laptop while being cheaper.

If you're accessing the NAS drives over Samba or NFS, Windows shouldn't need to care which file system you use on the server. I'd try again with a file system that is native to Linux, e.g. ext4.

The guide you used is for Ubuntu 18.04, which is a bit old. Maybe try a more up-to-date one for e.g. Ubuntu 20.04:

cavestory runs perfectly fine on my linux computer. my best guess is Linus's unconventional way of using thunderbolt to connect his monitor to his computer could be the cause. although i also could not get my controller to work with cavestory.

Yeah, but it looks like it's the only thing so fare that has not liked his dock so... And contrarily to the WAN Show where he said he has a "standard" setup, IIRC HiDpi screens are still a pain in the ass on Linux, so maybe this is part of the reason too.

He did search for the issue and bypassing the warning was a solution found on the net, just not to the right problem. Totally realistic situation in the "new user" context.

just get 2 4tb drives and use raid 1, the ssd speed won't really matter.

Normally 10gbe won't help with pictures or documents performance, gigabit should be fine, esp with how small your amount of storage is.

If you want 10gbe, you can do it with just a switch, no need for a router.

vms make it much easier to to backups and restore of things like the minecraft server, and you can set things up with out the worry of affecting the host. I don't see a reason not to here.

I guess I should have been more explicit. One has to look at benchmarks for the various games and applications that will be used. Sites like cpubenchmark.net provide a very rough comparison. If you look at the detail it does provide, https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i7-7820X-vs-Intel-i7-7900X-vs-Intel-i7-8700K/3038vs3056vs3098, you will see that the i7-8700K single thread performance is about 12% better than the i7-7820K. Programs like Photoshop and most games will therefore performs about 12% better on the i7-8700K even though it has the lower passmark score.

Let me boil it down in the most simple terms possible. The is a hidden trait within newer generation of cpu's called ipc (instructions per clock). Basically in lamens terms determines how many instructions cpu can process per cycle. Newer cpu have higher ipc, older cpu have lower ipc. The gigahertz on the cpu does not determine speed entirely. Kind of like getting a new 60hz monitor and having an having and old crt and saying the crt is better because it has over 150 hz. It just isn't that simple.
