  1. long story short, i want to cool something off using 2 140mm PWM fans that i have lying around. i have a 12v power source that i will be using to power the fans. the fan speed will be controlled by a potentiometer. my question is; which wire on the PWM plug to i connect to positive wire, and which one to negative? and can i leave the other 2 wires disconnected? or will i need to do something funky for this to work?
  2. any of the sony xperia 1 line up (although probably the V since its the newest) that phone is designed for the enthusiasts. it has usb 3.0, a 3.5 jack, great quality camera, that can easily be accessed by hitting the power button twice. the camera has actual real camera settings. camera settings like shutter speed and exposure. i had no idea how much i wanted those settings in a phone till i got my sony. and since this phone is meant for the creators, its default screen color settings is not vivid. it even has a white balance setting and you can manually adjust the colors how you see fit. the screen is longer with is great for reading articles, yet skinny so i can easily use one hand when typing. it doesn't have a lot of bloatware (it has some, but not nearly as much as others) its fast and snappy. has 120hz refresh rate screen. security updates is supported for at least 4 years. there is no notch/camera bump on the screen. also it has a very cool feature that if you plug it in to charge at night, it will charge slowly to preserve the battery. and yes you can turn this off. i love my sony phone.
  3. i looked into it. its a beautiful phone and i am in love. but it cost $1000. and one of the reviews i read on reddit just now said that is has an overheating problem. which scares me a little.
  4. i have been using my Samsung s9 for years with no issues. i recently broke it beyond repair and i don't like the newer phones available so i was going to buy another s9. that is when i learned that i am not the only one who really likes this phone. they are going for $350-$450. thats a little much for an old phone. so, are there any phones that has a headphone jack and no stupid screen notch? i also want it to have similar or better specs to the s9. also around the same size (i don't like big phones) i'm willing to buy refurbished.
  5. UPDATE: a friend of mine showed me how to use event viewer and this is what popped up. all those errors roughly lines up with times my computer crashes. they are all the same error. 0xc0000188 i have no idea what this error is complaining about but there seems to be 2 solutions on the internet and i am going to try both.
  6. it crashed again last night i find it weird that every time i try something the computer will be stable for a few days then it starts crashing again couple times a day.
  7. updated the firmware. now the waiting game begins again.
  8. i appreciate your concern. and also i fully agree with this video. we will not be using the tablet as a babysitter and he will not be on it all day either. he currently gets 1 hour of screen time a day, he decides when he can spend that time, and he usually doesn't use it all in one go. he gets bored after a while and goes back to playing with his toys. he usually watches construction trucks, garbage truck, or train compilations on the TV. games on this tablet will count towards that 1 hour max. the exception will be in June when my family and i will be traveling (flying) to europe. during the 16 hour flight we need to keep him occupied and the tablet will be one tool of many. we will also be bringing other toys, and lots of books. (he loves books) the tablet can also be used for him to listen to music on his bluetooth headphones. something he already does, except we play the music through our (my wife and i) phone.
  9. i have a 2.5 year old son who loves solving problems and playing with cars and blocks. we are about to go on a long trip so i decided to get a samsung tablet and load it with fun puzzle games for him to play with during the trip. i downloaded a few to try out and all of them were terrible. they had some of the worst in your face micro transactions, predatory pay-to-unlock, or other in-app purchases i had ever seen. (seriously, the fact that they are doing this to kids this young is bad). so i am asking the community; what are some good tablet games for a 2 year old that does not have in-your-face pay wall. i am willing to pay a few buck up front to get the whole game if the app is worth it, but no in-app purchases. i do not care if there are ads because the tablet will be offline whenever he is playing with it. so no ads.
  10. sabrent rocket 4 plus 1TB NVMe m.2. i use the exact same drive but at 500GB in my linux server which is running 24/7 and had no issues. still its possible.
  11. update time; saturday and sunday my pc has been perfectly stable, but monday and today (tuesday) it has been crashing again. so it looks like expo isn't the cause. i can memtest86 last night, (that bloody test took 5 hours) and it came back with 0 errors. what should i look at next? thank you so much for helping me so far.
  12. i turned Expo off on friday. so far it has been stable but it has only been one day. i downloaded Passmark memtest86 and will run it tomorrow. ill keep you updated. thank you for your help so far.
  13. i did all 3 yesterday, and the computer crashed again today. so unfortunately this wasn't the problem
  14. RDR2 seems to be the newest and hardest to run game so lets go with that. according to the video linked, you will be getting 60-90 FPS with the 3060 at 1080p. the 3060 TI is about 30%-40% faster. so about 80-120fps. thats still below the 144 Hz of your monitor. that being said, that is at maxed out settings. you can easily increase the frames to 144 by turning down a few settings. with the 3060 you will have to turn down more settings than the 3060 ti, but not that much more. the other games on your list should be easier to run and thus dont have to lower the settings much, if at all. your best bet is to go to youtube and type the name of the game you want to play, the name of the card (3060 or 3060 ti), and 1080p into search. there should be plenty of videos showing what frames they get at maxed out settings. then you can make your own decision to see if the faster 3060 TI is worth the extra cash to you. sorry i could not give you a more direct answer.
  15. both CPUs will play all the games you mentioned without breaking a sweat. so both the i5 and the ryzen5 are great options. get whatever you can get the cheapest (including the cost of the motherboard). a ryzen 7 5800x is not that much faster for gaming, especially the games you mention. the extra 2 cores will be great for productivity (blender, CAD, adobe products....), but not needed for games. so for you i would say that the ryzen 7 is overkill. as for laptop vs desktop; unless you need mobility, get a desktop. they last longer and are more powerful than a laptop while being cheaper.
  16. that 2070 is probably fried. also, who replaces RAM sticks while the computer is on?
  17. i just built a brand new computer with a clean install of windows 10 pro that sometimes freezes when i do light tasks, like browsing the web, or if it is idle. When it happens; first there will be a delay with commands i give the computer. then i cant interact with a program but i can still open/close programs. then i cant do anything other than moving the mouse around. then the screen goes black, but the computer never turns off. i am forced to hold the power button until it does a force shut down. this all happens in about 20-30 sec. at first i thought that it was a memory leak, so i kept task manager running in the background. the memory stays at about 6GB (out of 32) the time i checked and it still crashed. now here is the weird thing; this only happens when i do light tasks. never when i play games. it also happens about once or twice a day, so not supper often. but still annoying. (my computer is on most of the day) idk if this is relevant, but there was one day where the computer would not post. the ASUS motherboard gave me an error code 42. asus support told me to reseat the RAM stick which allowed the computer to turn on again. weirdly after that it didnt crash for a week. and now it is crashing again. could be a coincidence. Everything in my computer is new except for the GPU. so i dont know where to begin. is there a way for me to see what happened in the background during the crash after i reboot the computer? like a log? what can be the cause? here are my specs AMD ryzen 7 7700x GTX 1080TI Asus b650e motherboard (with the newest bios update as of February) 32GB (2x16) of 6000mhz corsair vengeance rgb pro 1tb of m.2 SSD with a clean install of windows10 pro
  18. ok, i guess i need a motherboard with good onboard wifi currently i need 11. i have way to many usb devices plugged in and the number is slowly increasing. my current motherboard only has 8 ports in the rear so i had to get an expansion card with 6 more USB. getting a motherboard with 13 in the rear will be great for now (didnt know i could get that many) but inevitably i will be needing more in the future. i will probually be using this computer for at least 10 years, maybe longer depending on how long AMD will support AM5. my current computer is 10 years old. i have slowly upgraded things over time but my motherboard, Powersupply, and case has been the same. when i bought that motherboard i decided to save money and not get one with m.2 thinking that SADA SSD is plenty fast enough. i have been regretting that decision for the last 5 years. so i know that it will be a while before i need gen5, but i dont want to buy a gen4 motherboard and then regret it 5 years later when i need gen5 for something.
  19. i am building a new gaming pc and need help picking a motherboard frankly because there are to many options. i would like an overclockable AM5 motherboard that supports PCIe gen5 with these slots. 2 PCIe 16x slots (one will be used by my video card, the other i want available if i add something) 2+ PCIe 1x slots (1 will be used for an USB expansion card, the other will be used for a PCIe wifi card) 2-3 M.2 nvme for high speed storage (i would prefer 3, but i will take 2) idk if it is important but i will be using the ryzen 7 7700x with 32 GB of 5600mhz ram i would like to stay below $300, but i am willing to spend more if it is the pest option for my needs. while i am at it, what PCIe wifi do you guys recommend? wired is not an option for where i live. i do not want a motherboard with built-in wifi unless one exist that has the same range as a PCIe wifi card. no usb wifi.
  20. thats my current solution, but i have a few minor complaints main complaint is space. my NAS is currently on my desk as i have nowhere else to put it and it want it gone. i have a linux computer that runs my plex, minecraft server, and stores my security cameras data. there is room inside for 4 more SSD and so if i move them there i can remove the NAS from my desk. (no there is no room around my linux server to place my NAS). i also like the idea of having a computer that does everything in one place.
  21. i tried this exact method, idk why but im having issues from day one. problem #1 is that every time i reboot the computer the path to the raid drive has changed, making it very hard to network my folders. and problem #2 is sometimes the software raid refuses to startup, leaving me unable to access the files on my 4 hard drives. i rebuild the raid 3 times, 3rd time a savvy linux user was with me and im still having the exact same issues. im just done dealing with it as i need it to be reliable and just work. its the whole reason why i am using raid to begin with as these 4 hard drives will be storing important files. (yes i am following the 3-2-1 rule for backing up my important files)
  22. i reposted this thread under storage devices since i realized that that is the better place for this question. please go there if you want to give me feedback.
  23. i made this post elsewhere but realized its better here. i have 4 identical 1TB SATA SSD i want to put in a raid5 on my linux machine. i at first used software raid but i could not get it to work right. after a while i gave up and decided to just go the hardware rout. im hopeful i could get one without having to break the bank. which one should i get? i dont care to much about speed, as long as it is faster than SATA speeds. i was thinking of this one but i heard that they are not exactly easy to set up. what i do care about is reliability and ease of use. which card would you guys recommend for me?
