  1. Hi all, As the title implies, I've got an idea for a laptop mod that is somewhat impractical but is just crazy enough to maybe work. In my Alienware 17 R5, I've got an extra 2240 (I think) M.2 M-key slot in my laptop that I am not going to be using for storage for the forseeable future. Additionally, on the same side of the laptop as the port is facing, I've only got one USB-A port and would like some expansion or docking capabilities. What are the odds that some adapter liek the aliexpress link below has, would be able to function? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000706475269.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.eec04e13it2pWx&algo_pvid=3c8ef2f6-19a7-4a6d-bbe6-ca59aa87f021&algo_expid=3c8ef2f6-19a7-4a6d-bbe6-ca59aa87f021-22&btsid=0ab6d67915884801557695820e54e6&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_ Imaging having a PCI(e?) 4x slot in the side of your laptop that you could plug an extension in at your desk/docking station for say usb expansion, HDD connection, or any other PCIe 4x device. Let me know what your thoughts are. Thanks, AJ
  2. Hey, I'm a big fan of the Omen X 17 laptop that came out last year. It's got all the specs I want along with a great bang for your buck. The only thing is, it still has 7th gen processors. For the length of time I'm planning on using this laptop, I need the extra CPU power. I can use and eGPU and upgrade ram and storage, but not so much a CPU. Does anyone have any idea when or if HP is going to release a refresh. I thought it would be release at Gamescom like the original Omen X was but they released the Obelisk so... Thanks in advance
  3. Hey, Does anyone know how long it usually takes for Nvidia to release the laptop or mobile versions of their new GPUs, particularly the RTX 2070? I'm in the market for a gaming laptop and am curious if its gonna be at all possible to wait for those GPUs. Thanks!
  4. Sure, the ones that met my requirements from what I've found are the Alienware 17 R5, MSI GS73 Stealth-016, and potentially the Omen X 17 if it gets a refresh which could be coming at gamescom next week. These all have gtx 1070, 16gb ram and 120hz+ FHD or QHD panels. Also, ideally an i7-8750k or HK. Razer doesmt have 8th gen cups in the Pro yet, and I dont like the selection of Asus ROG 17in laptops. Also, I'm not a fan of acer.
  5. I'm in the US. I'm wanting to spend $2400 tops. Aiming for $2000. I need a pretty powerful laptop that would ideally last me through my next 4 years of college. Battery life isnt huge and a dont mind weight. I much prefer specs to weight. I'm gonna running a bunch of CAD and engineering related programs as well as gaming. I have been previously looking at the Alienware 17 R5 and waiting to see what the Omen X 17 refresh may have because I could really use that 8th gen i7. Thanks for the review link!
  6. Hey, I'm looking into some 17" gaming laptops and came across the MSI GS73 Stealth. It looks very promising with an 8th-Gen i7 CPU, GTX 1070, 120Hz display, as well as a small form factor. However, I can't seem to find many reviews on it. There are quite a few Youtube videos about the GS63 but not the GS73. Does anyone have any experience or reviews on this laptop to help with my decision? Thanks in advance!
  7. Sounds good, I'm gonna go with a VPN. I'll try and integrate a domain over time as it would have better expandability and management for the future.
  8. That's a good idea, in still learning the Server OS but I should be able to do that. And the Remote Desktop Connection would be used for specific users who have a home laptop that they could use to work from their workstations software and resources offsite. Though, for the most part, just being able to access the file share remotely from work laptops would be very beneficial.
  9. I would like to use a domain. Itll have to wait until we get Windows 10 Pro on our current workstations though. We were going to upgrade select PCs for RDP purposes though.
  10. @Prymies I might just have to get a new one. What's weird is that it works perfectly when plugged in to a usb c port with my adapter but not in type a ports. I was able to copy all my data off of it that way. I wonder if it's some mechanical problem, like the contacts happen to fit perfectly in my adapter but not in typical ports anymore. Yet, I couldn't get a connection in a type a ports even with moving it around slightly...
  11. I think my question has really morphed into asking how to configure a VPN through a Windows Server 2016 Standard Edition Machine without a domain as it really isn't a viable option at this time for the company.
  12. How secure is this method, relatively? I do like the idea of using a Cisco router. I'll follow up if I decide to go that route. Thanks!
  13. I'll keep other software in mind. TeamViewer looks like a great alternative option. I have used RDP over the local network which works great. I now need a way to connect to the network remotely to allow for RDP connections from home or on the road as well as access to the file share. So really, a VPN...
  14. Do you have any knowledge on setting up a VPN server on 2016 wihout a domain? I also mistyped, the server is running Standard, not Essentials. Thanks!
