  1. right: I have a couple of NAS running. Most of my network is up on 2.5gbit and the unraid NAS (being linux based) work fine. The question: finding an affordable & supported 2.5gbit (or 5/10gbit but able to negociate down) NIC for my Truenas Core NAS Anybody got this working? What NIC? thx Jo
  2. For the "human malware" there is no issue... Worst case it remains active for about a day on cardboard. So unless you have some kind of ultra fast ordering you are safe. If the delivery person isn't coughing his lungs out of course... As far as buying on ALI express: same rule as always. if it is too good to be true it usually is.
  3. the local machine is a 3900X with an nividia 2080. (on idle) All the others are mostly backup NAS so no impact in usability for me... Skippy is an i7-5820K with a 1050TI Unraid4: 2700X (only on half the threads) Unraid2: i5-3470 Unraid3: G4900U I still have 2 freenas machines but those are harder to set up & those I have in active use
  4. right so the problem is specific to the PC -You roommate xbox has a wired or wireless connection? Over wireless it is obviously working, but if he is using wired the problem is specific to the PC unless he is using a different switch. -If you haven't tried it: boot into safe mode with networking support and check the speed.. just a thought.
  5. The Ai mesh does allow to do backhaul via ethernet, but it is not alway stable (few meshes are in my experience) and you need asus routers supporting it to make use of it. So using his router as an AP seems like the best solution check this one out... https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-turn-an-old-wi-fi-router-into-an-access-point/ it glances over the fact that you do not want different ssid's though: my guess is set up same ssid + password on the AP but maybe a different channel (not sure about this as I have never tried)
  6. Well... if you are using the same Ssid and password that should be painless. ap so far as i know = in DHCP from ap router + the same ssid and WiFi config.
  7. -I suppose you tried on more than one device and the problem is reproducable on other devices? If it is only one device it might be local (software) I had some "gaming" software instaled that was throtteling my speed. Took me a while to find it.
  8. I have been using asus Aimesh. It has support for ethernet "backhaul". It has to be said: the wifi mesh isn't super stable but the parts of it using ethernet are always working. But can't you configuer this router as an acces point? If you have fixed ethernet anyway those APs will be more stable than a mesh solution.
  9. Thx... goes to show. Just installing out of the box was never good idea but these semi smart programs can well and truly suck when they are just not smart enough.
  10. Everything is ethernet cable: 1Gbit -I swapped out the cable... same deal -both ethernet connections are on the same switch ... does the router even enter into it? -some further testing: the new PC has the same problem with all windows machines... (tried a third machine) -used second ethernet port on the new pc: identical problem >> software issue on the new PC? ... >> here is a hint: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/new-pc-build-slow-internet-speeds.3464857/ ? the new MB came with the asus bloatware / errrr software... gamefirst V. Apparently it spontaneously throttles filetransfer traffic (even if the prio is set to "normal"... 2MB/S is far from normal...) The weird thing is that it doesn't seem to notice when a file transfer from a freenas machines takes the entire bandwidth. Anyway: I'll uninstall it. good riddance.
  11. Right... recently I set up a new PC Unfortunately I am unable to copy data between the old and the new PC at a normal pace. Currently copying data is at about 2 MB per second. Copying data from a NAS to either machine goes at about 100 MB per second. Both PCs are running windows 10. The NAS is freenas. suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? Thx Jo
  12. Looking for some benchmarks on uwhd using the 2080 and 2080ti... Currently i am using a 1080 (not the ti version) and i am trying to figuer out what would be the best upgrade taking my native monitor resolution info accout (3440 x 1440) Thx Jo
  13. not all at once ;-) Guess this optane memory isn't all that popular
  14. No laughing... currently building an unraid nas machine as a backup for my freenas... recycled stuff all the way. Software killing HW is so rare... (never actually saw it happen and I have been building machines for 15 years) You seem to be down to motherboard, memory or cpu... I'd recommend getting them out of your PC and checking if they work one by one... (easy to hard so memory first then the Mobo / cpu combo) Any boot codes on the Mobo?
