  1. the codes for install work fine its activating it once your in the OS thats a pain
  2. yeah its funny watching budget builds on youtube and then try to do that here and your looking at $1000 or more for a low end system sometimes depending where you shop.
  3. Damn i just watched that Verge build guide. That has to be Satire right? Who would release that with a straight face and try to be serious! haha
  4. Craigslist for PC parts here is just ugh... live in Sydney so everything is either junk or 400% the cost it should be in Australian Rupees lol
  5. oh god watching that first video hurt my soul so much those poor poor components lol! pretty funny though. is that in response to a terrible build log or something?
  6. finding a working AGP card that is worth using that hasnt been marked up massively in price is a pain!. there is an Athlon 64 X2 here in the office thats sat un used for at least 3 years now. i should reach out to IT an see if they want to Donate it haha
  7. <3 I would love to build an Athlon 64 System again! havent used that CPU in sooooo long. and it would make finding working software a whole lot easier. not having SSE2 on the Athlon XP is a major pain in the butt to work around!
  8. Yeah what i find the most interesting is that the CPU is Single Core, Single Thread, 32-Bit, No SSE2. etc etc etc. Multi core, Hyperthreading, 64-Bit architecture and new instruction sets are all things that i have come to take for granted and i forgot about them not existing haha! Try finding modern software (Like Browsers) that will work on a Non SSE2 CPU the struggle is real lol!
  9. yeah it makes sense with it being no longer supported but it will make preservation of systems from this era extremely hard without dodgy windows installs if Microsoft DRM will lock systems out after 30 days and they no longer offer any form of activation for the software.
  10. There doesn't seem to be any legitimate way to activate it anymore online or over the phone (tried both). Managed to get a new factory sealed copy of XP with a genuine licence and was pretty sad to find i couldn't activate it. i resorted to ... 'less genuine' means to make this copy genuine
  11. So I have finally finished my retro (early to mid 2000's for me) gaming PC. I use the term finished loosely as i am still looking to swap in a better motherboard that will allow me to chance FSB and multiplier settings (current one is bios locked and i can't find a compatible bios to flash it with). This started out as me buying a shitty Compaq on eBay for about $20 with the goal just to muck around with it and i ended up going deep down the Rabbit hole and spending a whole lot more money (and a huge amount of time) on different components and learning some basic early 2000's modding (Like sleeving my own IDE cables). This turned into a pretty cool little project for me and it was great to build the computer i always dreamed of when i was a teenager Specs are as follows: * AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (thoroughbred Core) * 1GB DDR 3200 * ATi Radeon 9600XT * Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Eddition (with Live Drive) * 2x 160BGB 7200RPM HDD * Wireless LAN * DVDRW / 3.5" FDD * Custom Sleeved IDE cables / Sleeved ATX Power extension * Cooler Master Xdream III CPU Cooler * Swanky Blue Lights pic below for you to peruse

  13. I Only tend to buy retro parts used (think DDR2 Era and below) but ive really never had many issues. i probably purchased 100+ Parts for retro machines used and ive only ever had an issue with a stick of Ram once being faulty. If you stick to reputable places to shop then its pretty safe. if a part is faulty then you have lots of recourse to get your money back. in most cases just let the seller know and they will offer you a refund.
  14. Linus did a pretty comprehensive video on cleaning thermal paste with a whole bunch of different stuff
  15. lol it will shortly be transported into a nicer build that is just waiting for a motherboard to arrive at the moment but i couldnt resist testing it out will likely be plopping a SB Live or Asus Xonar DG back in this one
  16. Looking awesome so far! ive been contemplating doing something similar but i have zero wood working skills.
  17. So i salvaged and restored an old Compaq Presario thought you guys might like to see some pics. https://imgur.com/a/f97IiZn Please note that this is still a work in progress and I'm not finished with the inside of the case or transplanting in hardware yet
  18. about to start a retro early/mid 2000's XP Gaming machine build with the following 300W PSU Gigabyte GA-7VT600 AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (thoroughbred core) 1GB Geil DDR400 (2x512 kit) 2x Seagate 7200RPM 160GB HDD AMD Radeon 9600XT (256MB) Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Fata1ty (with live drive front pannel) DVD RW all jammed into a new case with a "fancy" window and will be doing some custom IDE sleeving and custom cooling for the GPU. also got a nice fancy Cooler master cooler for the socket A cpu (those are damn hard to find now!) If anyone is interested in seeing the Final build let me know im planning to do a video
  19. i spend like 99% of my time playing Blizzard games. used to run Linux back in the early days of Ubuntu and didnt have many issues back then but i just kinda drifted back to windows for reasons i can't remember now lol (probably Nvidia driver woes back in early days). would probs check it out again but would have be be something annoyed me like crazy to make the jump again (I'm just super lazy now)
  20. I mean i definitely can but there's no real point if Win does everything i currently need what would i use a Linux dual boot for
  21. If you are planning on overclocking and stuff i might suggest going with a slighlty higher wattage and gold rated PSU otherwise very awesome build! I hope you get a tonne of enjoyment out of it
  22. Honestly that wendell video almost convinced me to go Linux instead of Win10 haha
  23. Hi Guys/Gals, I'm currently playing around with a Sapphire ATI Radeon 9550 and getting ready to muck around with flashing the bios and overclocking but had a questions about the card that i haven't been able to find an answer to with all my googling. Was hoping there might be a brilliant mind on here who can help me out There is a Jumper on the Board simply labelled JP1. I am currently assuming this is similar to a bios switch on more modern cards allowing me to switch between between 2 Bios versions but want to be 100% sure before i mess with it. Is anyone here sure and able to confirm or deny my suspicions? Please see this Image of the card have circled the jumper i am referring to. https://imgur.com/a/SxcL7r1 Thanks!! - Reth --- EDIT: Hmmm... I may have already figured it out myself. Could possibly be a PAL/NTSC switch for the S Video output. Still not 100% sure though if anyone can confirm or deny lol ---
  24. Thanks mate =D im just waiting for a few modding supplies to arrive and ill be filming the build =D by some miracle of god the manafacturer of my AM37 motherboard (FIC) still has their 20 year old FTP server running with the original bios so i can flash the locked down compaq one away and be able to OC the chip up to 3200 as well
  25. ohh the 6800 was a pretty awesome card though for its time despite the tacky cartoon dude on the cooler haha.
