Upgrading to Windows 10 depends on what CPU your laptop is using. For anything less than an i3, not recommend to upgrade to Windows 10.

Windows 7 is fine with just 4GB of RAM but for Windows 10, I would recommend upgrading to at least 8GB via two 4GB DDR3 SODIMM modules.

Ohh, one of those Ilano systems. The gpu portion was certainly no joke for it's time, stomping on the bottom rung dGPUs such as the Radeon 5470, 6450 and GeForce 310M. A pity though that the cpu was, comparatively, kind of a joke, though no more so than Bulldozer.

I'd go with SSD here. If you're already sitting at 4 GB of RAM, that's probably fine for light general use. A clean install onto the SSD is best, though from personal experience, OEM drivers tend to be a stickler, especially if you're moving to Windows 10. Since you're not using one of those hacked together Switchable Graphics laptops from that era (good grief, the driver situation was horrible with those), you can probably get away with using AMD's reference mobile driver.

so you do have a 2.5" bay for an SSD, now it's time to measure the HDD's thickness, 7mm or 9.5mm. Also check the connector, whether it's micro SATA, mSATA or normal SATA (last one also found in desktops).

As for memory, thankfully you're using DDR3 which is still available. However, new DDR3 sticks might not work. If you have spare money after an SSD (which Ill go to after finding out the connector type), get another 4GB stick with the same number of chips on the PCB as your current one. 1333 ones should be fine, you dont have to pick 1066 only since memory sticks can downclock to match the current sticks or the max supported frequency of the CPU

too old to find any data, do you mind taking the back panel off and send us a picture? Tbh I'll only consider SSD upgrade, you can reuse this part for something else when the laptop gets replaced.

Sony Vaio's back in the day had some type of workaround that everything would install to a different partition so there might be a way. None that come to mind

Yes saving to the desktop is C:\Users\%Username%\Desktop. You can reroute where folders go for any and all folders including desktop. Most are through Reg Key Modifications or Local Group Policy (Pro Operating Systems).

A common use of that is Folder Redirection in Windows and Active Directory Domains.

Most programs by nature will assume C:\ , keeping in mind programs installed to your HDD will run from your HDD, so if you need the speed of the SSD say for a game you need to install it to the SSD.

if you open up file explorer to "this pc" it has shortcuts to videos pictures desktop etc. right click on desktop folder and select properties, click on the location tab, then click the move button, set it to a folder on your hdd (typically create a new folder labeled desktop), it'll ask you if you want to move everything already there over as well.

In windows, yeah, saving to the desktop will typically be part of the C drive by default which would be your SSD in this case. But it's easy enough to choose to save the files elsewhere if you want. You could even create a shortcut to those files and put the shortcut on the desktop for ease of access, while they remain saved on your HDD instead of the SSD, thus saving space on your SSD.

Yup it will be saved on SSD unless u change the default storage location.
U can change storage directory in Windows -> Settings -> System -> Storage -> More Storage Option -> Change where new content is saved.

You can reroute where folders are in windows, desktop im not 100% sure about, but I know you can change the location of each of the other folders such as downloads, music, etc.

Night one with new RAM and no reboots. <3 we'll give it a week. Thank you if this works.

I'm using a 7820x, 32gb RAM, 1060 6GB (I've got a 2080 Ti FE on preorder, not sure if I'll regret that), and game intstall on 960 EVO NVMe. I'm getting under 40 FPS @1080 regardless of quality settings.

Would be good to see what other people are getting.

Sounds like it could perhaps be a ram issue if it only happens once you stress the ram with running applications.Especially with Chrome which is known to be quite ram hungry

Yep, I just remembered that. Grab an AMD HD 8570 off of ebay and you should be good to go.

Something like this (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YVHmFt) should be fine for your needs. The operating system will be slightly more difficult, but you can buy an OEM key off of ebay for relatively cheap.
