Hi, everyone. I'm looking to have a simple NAS, to use with RAID 1 for redundancy. There will be no fancy use-cases, so I think I'm fine with an entry-level product with 2 bays and no thrills, I plan to use it only for data storage and maybe backups of several computers
That said, Synology kinda has 3 of those (DS220j, DS218play and DS218), with minor differences (mainly RAM and hardware video encoding capabilities). I would go for the cheapest one, but half a gig of ram is putting me off, cause I found a few reviews claiming that it's slow because of that. And having no experience with NAS, I'm not sure how much ram is enough. So, the questions:
1. Which one would you recommend for my simple use-case? Other brands are possible too in the same price range
2. Which drives should I use? Of course NAS-optimised ones are ideal, but regular ones like Seagate Baracuda and WD Blue seem to be cheaper, but use SMR instead of CMR, not sure how much of a concern is that for a NAS application
Thanks a lot
