  1. Yeah, sorry. I just got a little annoyed at the threads tone, I didn't mean to make it seem like I thought no one was trying at all, lol. It seems like the Elgato HD60 S might work, but the 4k Pro is PCI-e, and big so I don't think that would fit in a Mac Mini, or any PC I currently have. I think my only options for a Mac Desktop are the Monitor style all-in-one PCs, or the Minis, right? If that's the case I don't think I can modify the all-in-one without doing a lot of stuff. I wish Micro ATX Macs were a thing, so I could get a better system for the same price as a Mini.
  2. I honestly expected better quality posts in this thread. As I'm just seeing people guessing, posting Windows work-arounds, and saying "stick with PC" but I'm failing to see why I should "stick with PC" outside of money reasons, and I don't mind paying for a better experience one bit. As much as tech people would love to think otherwise software, and operating systems cost money to make like anything else, and good ones cost more money, and I'm wondering if any of you say "Stick with bicycles instead of buying a car, they cost less." The fact of the matter is this - if I want a PC that gives me privacy, but is still officially supported by companies and products worth putting the time and money into owning I don't have a choice outside of Mac. So can we stop derailing my topic already?
  3. Hi. I'm kind of in the same boat as you, to be honest. I've reached a point where I'm not okay with every pixel change of my mouse pointer being sent to anyone with $0.000001 to try to sell me the next big thing, but I also don't feel I should need to write my own OS just to get things to work like a PC should in 2018. I'm looking into getting a Mac after I found myself enjoying my new iPhone far more then my old Samsung. If you don't mind my asking - what are your thoughts on Mac? Have you tried it? And does it seem like what you're currently looking for?
  4. Hi, everyone. I've been making posts about trying to find a good tech setup (for web browsing, game-play recording, media creation, and note taking) for a while, and I felt I almost had it with a $250 Mini PC, Monitor, TV, and Console. That was before Windows 10 went live with a new update that seem to make it so people can't change their default apps without attaching a Microsoft Account to their Windows 10 PC even if it is activated already. Now I've pretty much had enough from Windows, but Linux still doesn't have a user experience that I feel is good enough to use (Ubuntu, and Mint mainly, but I did try others and pretty much got the same result) so I thought I was SoL, but I had decided to get a iPhone SE in place of my next Android because I wanted a secure phone that could still use all the apps I want (Nintendo Switch Online, and LINE for example) so I didn't want to shell out $500+ for a okay-ish Samsung that'd still need a installed, and modified custom ROM. My time with my iPhone has been lovely (Having to learn a new UI aside the only thing I dislike about it is the lack of a "back" button which forces me to find a back button on the apps I use.) so I'm almost ready to dive right in, but there are a few more hick-ups I need to figure out. Like how to capture video from game consoles on MacOS - A lot of capture cards are Windows only, but I did find this one which looks good *1 and still works on MacOS, but it requires a lot to capture 1080p60, so I doubt I could get the footage I want from even the latest Mac Mini. I wanted to stay in the $400 range of Mac Mini for my next PC because I don't want to jump in to MacOS in case I hate it, but I don't feel good paying $400 for a PC that can't handle capturing (and recording) , or streaming at 1080p60. It was then I started looking at the iMacs. I don't like the idea of a PC being in my monitor, but the fact I can have a 4k display at 21.5 inches is making me wonder if I can find a way to make this setup work. My current setup that "meets" my needs is a lame 1080p tv, a Mini PC (BeeLink X45 Pro - which I don't like very much) a HP 22cwa monitor, and a Live Gaming Extreme USB capture card. The games I play are mainly fighting games, so I don't want a refresh rate on my display lower then 60fps unless it's caped by the game on the system, and lag can quickly become an issue too. My setup I am scheming is to get a iMac *2 that can handle capturing (and recording / streaming in) 4k, and just full screen the capture app to use as my display. I'm wondering if I really need stuff like an i7, and 16GB DDR4 2400 RAM to capture, and record 4k at 60 (or display at 60, and save/broadcast at 30)? If anyone who has a iMac, and Live Gamer Ultra can you help me figure it out? *1 = https://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-Live-Gamer-ULTRA-GC553/dp/B07DHV47HF/ *2 = https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Retina-Computer-i5-5675R-QuadCore/dp/B07C87C9D9/
  5. Hi. I just got a iPhone SE off eBay, and I'm really liking it so far (though it's still quite tricky since this is my first iPhone), but I've ran into a big problem. I have a collection of .oggs (music) sorted by folders (the folders are basically doubling as play lists. I have many files duplicated :( ) and I was counting on being able to use VLC on iPhone like I could on Android, but the VLC on the app store is more like the Xbox One version of VLC, and I can't seem to add files to it unless I use a browser and my local network, and I can't navigate based on those files/folders at all. I tried using Picard to sort the music I have, but a lot of it is YouTube remixes, and mashups that it gets wrong. What are my options for getting a .ogg music collection onto my iPhone, and being able to play songs, and folders of songs?
  6. Thanks, I kinda figured I was SoL for protection options, but thought I'd ask anyway, lol.
  7. Actually, the TV stays in place. Normally it's a cord or something hitting it. Thanks for answering the IPS thing though. I guess I really just meant glare reduction when I said that.
  8. So I have some pretty bad luck with new TVs. Every time I get a new TV I always end up finding a way to scratch it with in a year of owning it. I tried googling hd tv screen protectors to figure out if they're any good, but Google only gave me Amazon, and Ebay links. I'm wondering if hd tv screen protectors are worth the $50-ish they seem to go for, and how good they actually protect the screen. Honestly if I could I'd put some Gorilla Glass on it. I'm planing to get a 4K TV soon, so if 4K screens are any easier or harder to scratch that'd be good to know. Also, is there a way give a screen IPS* with a screen protector? I'm betting know, but i doesn't hurt to ask. *https://www.viewsonic.com/library/photography/what-is-an-ips-monitor-panel
  9. I'm necro-posting a bit, but I forgot about this topic. The reason it matters is simple: I'm not using any 4k media devices, so I want the best 1080p experience I can get. The Nintendo Switch is still maxing out at 1080p, and that's my main system of choice. I have a normal Xbox One, but I don't think that'll do 4k ether. I'd need a Xbox One X. Besides that, I still play my Switch much more often. @Pasi123 is right that a screen with more pixels per inch, or dots per inch will result in a better screen then a screen with higher resolution. I was going to do a "for example" paragraph, but I think everyone should just see for themselves. I've made some images to show off the differences we're disusing. Some notes before we start: 300 ppi is the start of "HiPPI" Displays according to Uber Gizmo | Do you need hidpi displays? 102 ppi is what my current monitor is giving me at 1080p 54.9 ppi is ever so slightly better then what a 79 inch 4K TV offers according to Lifewire | How many pixels is an inch? 1920 x 1080 is 1080p, FHD, or as it's normally called now HD. 3840 x 2160 is UHD 4K, the most common thing people think of when they just think 4K. The last image, which starts with the name 005 is just a copy of image 1 for quick comparison with image 004. These were made in GIMP, and exported as .bmp so there should not be any compression at all. PPI-imgs.zip
  10. Yeah, I was worried that would be my reply. It kinda sucks that companies focus on making the screens bigger, or higher res (UHD, 4K) instead of better (OLED, QLED, IPS). I'd love to just have a good 1080p IPS OLED HDTV.
  11. Hi. So, I am currently using this monitor as my TV https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072M34RQC/ and I love it as a display. It's a nice size, and has IPS so I don't get glare when the sun is behind my window, but it's not perfect. It doesn't send the right info for audio on some of the things I hook up to it, and I have to go into the settings menu to change the volume. I decided to try checking Amazon to see if there are any HDTVs like it, and found very few HDTVs that were less then 24 inches, and only one still selling at 22 inches. Right now I feel like anything above 26 inches is taking up space I don't have or want to give to a TV, and I can't seem to find any HDTVs with IPS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPS_panel So I was wondering if y'all know of any.
  12. Hi, and thanks for the reply. I'm downloading coretemp now, and overheating was pretty high on my "It's probably this" list. I've tried a few drives, and windows installs, but the freezing persists. If it does turn out to be over heating what are my options for cheap and easy ways to fix that? I've managed to take apart and put this thing back together, but I'm not good at soldering, so my options might be more limited then most.
  13. Hi. I've got an alienware laptop that seems to freeze after running for a bit. I was wondering what are some good ways to troubleshoot this? Is there any software I can use to test my hardware and get a log like "The RAM blocks from 6B to 7.5GB didn't respond correctly. Please make sure they are properly inserted" or maybe check whats going on with my CPU and GPU percent and heat wise?
