  1. Hi CatBoiler, I went with the 24 port to allow for expandability in the future (more drops if needed, surveillance, etc.). Each of those 8 port switches are for separate rooms with only one ethernet drop in them.
  2. Hi all, I am about to revamp my home network, and I'd like to double check myself before making the purchases. To explain my plan better, I attached a network diagram to this post. The products I plan to purchase are as follows: Switch: Ubiquiti UniFi 24 port 250W PoE Switch (x2): Netgear 8 port GS308 (each used for rooms with an ethernet drop) APs (x2): Ubiquiti UniFi AC PRO Patch Panel: Cable Matters 24 port Cat6 Extra: Ubiquiti Cloud Key Based on this and my plan, do you see anything that I may have overlooked, or do you think this setup should work just fine? Thank you for your advice!
  3. What kind of peripherals do you currently have? As small as this may sound I personally love having a nice keyboard, mouse, and mousepad to help with gaming. I find it to help tremendously with my overall comfort. If you're looking for a serious enhancement, then VR would be what you're looking for. The HTC Vive will give you the best immersion experience as of today, given you are able to hand out the hefty $800 price tag and you have a good enough PC.
  4. I can understand why people dislike Apple, but I do want to point out that their customer service is probably one of the best I've seen in a company. For example I hear many stories of Apple employees doing the good deed and upgrading the customer's machine under certain circumstances when they bring it to an Apple Store. Another example I can say from personal experience is when their products has some trouble, I can simply bring it in and Apple will help me out. I've brought in broken chargers (they just stopped working, I did not damage it intentionally), EarPods that had some trouble, my Apple Watch Sport band that had trouble locking into place, and all of those they replaced after simply checking it out. No extra fees or anything.
  5. What IP address are you currently seeing when it is reset?
  6. Sorry for the late reply to both of you. @WhiteManito, I did eventually find the one that you linked and went with it. So far it has been working as intended. The only struggle was to actually get it working. For some reason the keyboard itself would show it is connected to the computer, but none of the keystrokes actually registered. Ultimately, I had to reset the keyboard from the reset button on the bottom. It definitely was a weird solution as I already tried that, but it somehow magically worked this time. @Antony Leung, I needed a wireless keyboard because I was actually searching for one for my mother who I convinced to get a mechanical keyboard eventually (as she works in an office and would really benefit from having a mechanical one), however, she required it to be wireless. I tried to convince her to go wired, and even go as far as showing her cable management techniques that I could do for her to make it seem wireless, but she didn't go for it.
  7. First off, I know you said you reset the router already, but I want you to reset it again. Either find the reset button on the router itself and hold it in for around 30 seconds or so, or log into the router and find the "Reset to factory settings option." Once the router is fully reset and it is back up and running, log into the router from your computer via the Ethernet cable (username and password to log into a default router is typically "admin" and "password"). Once you're logged in to the router, navigate to the Wireless options (or some other named option similar to that). From there you should be able to find the options to change the SSID (WiFi name) and the password. Change both to what you would prefer, and log into the WiFi from another device. If you did all that successfully, then you are good to go!
  8. I am looking for a wireless full length mechanical keyboard using Cherry MX Brown switches. Macros would also be a plus if it exists with these requirements. This would be used in an office environment and typing would be the main purpose, hence the Cherry MX Browns (Browns would the right switch for this purpose, right?). I've been looking, but I can't seem to find a keyboard that matches these requirements because I think the wireless feature limits the selection down so much. Anyway, any help would be appreciated!
  9. I'll for sure keep that in mind. I think I will be running 1x 1080p stream at a time, maybe alongside an audio (music) stream. Thank you for bringing it up too, good to know.
  10. I have a 2009 Mac Pro that I would like to convert into a server using unRaid to act as a NAS and also run other plugin applications they offer (Plex, etc.). Spec wise, I believe the machine will be a great fit for plenty of years to come, hopefully, but correct me if I'm wrong. Now my question is because the Mac Pro is using EFI, and doesn't support a traditional bios, will I run into any issues installing unRaid? I do have a GTX 970 that I can use, however, I am unable to see any of the boot screen process until it loads a OS. If I use the 970 then I will be unable to select the USB to boot from as I will not be able to see any boot screen. I can boot from a USB easily by holding the option key and selecting the USB when it pops up as long as I am using an EFI compatible card, in my case the GT 120.
  11. I honestly didn't look into using unRAID to do all the services I want. Looking more into it though, I think it might be the better option to go with.
  12. After doing some research, I can't seem to find a decent way to make a VM in FreeNAS. Maybe I am missing something? There doesn't seem to be a simple plugin as I thought, so some people are trying to jail VMs, however, the stories I am seeing are either working with limited functionality or they didn't work at all. Good to know. I was assuming all the servers were going to be pretty lightweight, so I'm glad someone else agreed with that. Now I just have to figure out how to be able to make the VM on FreeNAS.
  13. I've never looked into a Linux based OS before, as well as Samba, to be honest.
  14. Good point... I guess the way I was looking at unRAID was to only use it as a VM tool. Would the VirtualBox plugin, as alex75871 mentioned, be a good alternative to run other VMs? I would like to run minecraft, CS GO, and possibily Gmod servers. All of which would only be for private use between a couple friends. I haven't done as much research into this area as it is not my main priority, so please forgive me if there is an easier way, but I definitely would like the capability on the server to do so once the rest is functioning.
  15. It is a very similar build when I looked at it. One thing that stood out to me is that the RAM isn't ECC, and that is definitely something you'd want to take advantage if you plan on running this system 24/7.
