  1. Hi! I have recently upgraded my 7950X build to include a 4090 and had to swap out the case to accomodate its size. Since I will be keeping the old stuff for a backup computer, I basically start from scratch in regards to cooling - apart from the CPU, which is cooled by the Noctua NH-D15S (so a single fan only right now!). Which means my current build runs on the following fans: - 3x ASUS 4090 TUF - 1x on the 7950X - 2x on the front, preinstalled from the case (Fractal North Mesh) There are no additional fans at the top, side, or back. The CPU is using a -20 undervolt, so it‘s not generating as much heat. When just browsing, the CPU sits at 40°C. In addition, the new GPU never really reaches hot temps, even when under heavy load. I have chosen the new North Mesh case specifically for air flow, and their new fans are actually really quiet - especially at low workloads. When not in idle - and actually doing work - I do code compilation (virtualization, game dev) as well as 3d modelling and rendering and AI stuff (this tends to put VRAM and CUDA usage at 100%, and the card screams with coil whine). So my questions right now are: - Do I even need to improve my cooling? - If so, I was thinking about adding one more fan to the CPU cooler (1x Noctua NF-A15 HS-PWM chromax.Black.swap) as well as the back (1x Noctua NF-F12 PWM chromax.black.swap). Are these a good idea? Many thanks in advance!
  2. Damn, I only checked the verified memory on the motherboard's side. Thanks! Any last changes or things I've overlooked? Or would this be good to go?
  3. I am actually still perfectly fine with the 1080ti and would rather wait for the 4090 cards to drop in price. The new AV1 codec seems exciting. Sadly, I can't use AMD cards due to the tools I use (they only run on NVIDIA cards) - and buying a 3080+Intel Arc combo seems a bit wasteful right now. My plan is to upgrade in 2023 or 2024 to a new card. Right now, I only play 1440p@60hz (with some games at 4K on my TV, using a long HDMI 2.1 cable, but they run fine as well). I actually get dizzy when the screen refreshes faster than 60hz (I had to disable the 120hz mode on my iPad because I got motion sickness when scrolling around). When I upgrade the GPU, I'll upgrade the case as well, the Meshify C is just too small for the new cards. I'll keep the Pop case in mind! I actually use SideFX houdini for modelling, which is rather CPU and RAM bound (it once ate up all 64gb within seconds). The VRAM hog would be Unity I guess, but 11gb have been fine so far. Based on what I could research yesterday and today, I have decided to drop to 32gb RAM for now. A real 64GB kit at 600mhz either isn't out yet, or I can't seem to buy it anywhere. I'll see how far I can go with 32gb and maybe replace it with 64gb next year. Until then I won't be doing much modelling or simulation work anyway. Due to the RAM clearance troubles I had, I switched out the NH-D15 cooler with the NH-D15S. This should allow all RAM sticks to be installed, regardless of their size. Here's the updated list: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/M62ZH2 Even though the RAM is not on the QVL, would it still work because of the EXPO profile? Thanks in advance!
  4. I have updated the original post with the updated list (https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/spaceemotion/saved/rWbPJx). This already has a new RAM (dual channel instead of 2x 2x16 kits), but I am not sure if it would work. Where would I get a list with verified RAM sticks for this platform?
  5. Thanks for the updated list! I do have a couple questions though: - I went with the Gigabyte board as it has that Dr.Debug display. The ASUS one you selected seems to be missing this? I have had issues in the past that only that through help with that display could resolve - You downgraded to 32gb. I actually am fairly close to 64gb usage (sometimes programs even run out of memory), so that'd be too small for me - The new case seems to be bigger than my Meshify C. I have the case on my standing desk, I would like to keep the current dimensions (although I was thinking about upgrading to the Meshify 2 C instead) - The Video card seems good, but has less VRAM than I have currently. Not sure how this would handle baking lightmaps in larger scenes. - What's the reasoning behind switching to the 7900X? From the benchmarks I saw, there was still a fairly big difference in compute between it and the 7950X (in games not so much)
  6. Also, I just noticed: The Ripjaws only have an XMP profile and no EXPO. Is that something I should look out for? Would they still work as intended? I would have went with F5-6000J3238G32GX2-TZ5N - G.SKILL International Enterprise Co., Ltd. (gskill.com) but they had the height issues with the cooler.
  7. Okay, yeah, I did get the Threadripper fairly close to launch as well. The only troubles I had were memory related but got fixed fairly quickly. I always went with air coolers so far (I don't want to have any water in my system), but an AIO is something I can always get later, right? From what I can tell, the NH-D15 is fairly close in performance (only about 100mhz in difference due to throttling), but that's acceptable for me.
  8. Oh wow, thanks! I updated my parts list again (https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/spaceemotion/saved/rWbPJx). Do you think this config works as intended? If yes, I'd like to purchase it within the next couple days. Cheers!
  9. I was checking the AMD website, but I can't seem to find those speeds recommended anywhere: AMD Ryzen™ 9 7950X | AMD Does the recommended speed change when I am using a quad-channel configuration? Also, would 2x32gb be better, or 4x16gb? Thanks!
  10. Alright, so I updated the parts list: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/spaceemotion/saved/rWbPJx - Changed out the RAM - Changed out the SSD With an NVME drive For some reason the RAM seems to be quite tall, would the cooler still fit? I don't care about flashy RGB (preferably none). Edit: According to the G.Skill FAQ The Modules are 44mm in height. The Noctua website only claims 36mm or 32mm (with the second fan) in space. Are there any smaller modules that are still really good? The only alternative I found was G.Skill Ripjaws S5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory (F5-6000J3040F16GX2-RS5K) - PCPartPicker (33mm in height) Edit 2: Swapped out the RAM with the Ripjaws.
  11. Oh! Right, cause M.2 is only the form factor. I guess I have to replace that as well then. Thanks!
  12. It actually is an M.2 SSD. The model no. for it is MZ-N6E1T0BW (SSD 860 EVO M.2 SATA 1TB Memory & Storage - MZ-N6E1T0BW | Samsung US). The only SATA device I have is the WD HDD.
  13. Budget (including currency): 3,000 EUR Country: Germany Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Software-Development (lots of things through Docker, IDEs, Unity 3D), Audio Design, 3D Modelling, Gaming (plus VR) Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I am currently thinking about upgrading my Threadripper 2950X system I built in September 2018. In comparison to my office Thinkpad laptop with an Intel chip, my system feels quite sluggish (especially when building new docker images, compile times are quite higher, etc.). Things I would like to keep are my GPU (GTX 1080Ti), the case (Fractal Meshify C) as well as my PSU (BitFenix Whisper M 850 W 80+ Gold). Things I would have to replace: CPU + Cooler, Motherboard and RAM. In the future, I would like to upgrade my GPU and PSU when the RTX5xxx series comes out (VR games have begun to become more demanding). Here's a PCPartPicker list with both, my existing hardware and the new stuff: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/spaceemotion/saved/d9s4pg EDIT: Updated list through feedback from this post: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/spaceemotion/saved/rWbPJx The following questions came up: - Why does it say I can't use my 860 EVO? Do I have to change out that drive? - Is this the motherboard I need? I am still confused to which one I should get. - Does 64GB of RAM work at those clock speeds? Or would it get throttled and be overkill for the system? Many thanks in advance!
  14. Is there a way to see if we registered correctly? I am a bit unsure about what I submitted was actually all correct (like the link to my profile) since it was the first time I participated.
  15. Alright, that makes sense. I can see my CPU chugging along, but the GPU is kind of "dead" (only 13% usage, even on "full power" mode). Is there a setting I'm missing? Also, do the Work units stop when I just shut down, or do I need to explicitly hit "stop folding" beforehand?
