Apple has never stored or handed the encryption keys over to any government agency in the past. When Apple has complied with requests for data in the past, it was because that data was not encrypted on iCloud. Now that the data can be encrypted, there is nothing to hand over to authorities.

I have always believed that Apple is a leader in consumer data protections. With these new features, even more people will be able to feel safe with their data on Apples Servers. I encourage everyone to opt-in to these features, especially encrypting your photos and backups. I hope Apple continues to push forward with consumer data protection enchantments to further distinguish itself from the "You are the product" buisness models of companies like Google and Microsoft.

To further demonstrate how serious this is, the FBI is worried that Apple is implementing these features. The FBI provided multiple statements on the subject:

I think it was only a proposal, or passed the draft before. Now it is actually official. But yes, we have had news threads about this like three times already. Just in different stages of the passing of the bill.

I think it's good news. Before people freak out about losing MagSafe on their MacBook, please remember that the current MacBook are already compliment. This is not saying "no other standard is allowed". It just says you have to be able to charge the device with USB-C, which you can on MacBooks today. You are allowed to have multiple ways to charge.

And before people scream about how this will get outdated and now we are stuck with USB-C forever, please remember that the legislation can and will be updated if a better standard comes along. It's not like we get new charger standards every other year either.
It took Samsung like 2.5 years to start using it in their phones. Even IF the process of getting a new standard adopted in the legislation, it won't be an issue.
Plus, I am sure the EU will fasttrack the chance if someone like USB-IF asks them.

This is not even a DMA/DSA [digital markets act/digital services act ] lawsuit, and the EU is properly fining google for monopoly abuse within the android Ecosystem
If the EU Had added the DMA/DSA rules on top of this lawsuit/appeal, the fines could have become even higher.

At least its a good sign that the HIGH Fine is still a HIGH Fine, and not just a mere fraction of the original fine, just like with many other court cases like this where a company gets fined for 4 Billion, but it gets reduced to a mere fraction of that fine, being at most 40 Million.

Man, the pricing is absolutely nuts in Europe.

I get the exchange rate fluctuation, but the 14 Pro Max now starts at 1450€. That's pricing that was previously reserved for bleeding edge technology like the Samsung Fold devices. If you want even just a little bit more storage you're looking at 1500€+ for a Pro iPhone, and the 14 Pro Max goes all the way to 2100€. Even the most basic iPhone 14 with 128 GBs now costs 1000€.

That has to cost them a lot of market share over the mid to long term. Many companies have stricter approval processes for investments starting at 1000€ and for the average consumer, breaking the 1000€ barrier with the bog standard iPhone will also be a reason to reconsider. In the past, the standard models were an easy choice for anyone wanting a modern iPhone without having to spend four figures on a smartphone. And they didn't even lower the pricing of the existing iPhone 13 lineup, that still starts at 800€.

I mean I get it, they want to keep their high margins in the current high inflation environment. But there has to be a point at which the loss in the number of total sales will eclipse the benefit of the higher margins, and I think they're about to find out where that point is.

This is some seriously good multi-core performance for the 13900k. It's only 4% slower than a Threadripper 3975WX, and 16% slower than a Threadripper 5975WX; which are both 32c/64t CPUs. Both of those CPUs usually score around 42,300 to 48,400 points in Cinebench R23. It ends up being about 2% faster than a Threadripper 5965WX, a 24c/48t CPU, which scores about 40,200 points. Here the 13900k is scoring 40,616 points. Only downside I see with these results is power consumption, as when it was tested with unlimited power it drew 314W. It also hit 90°C with a 360mm AIO. This was during the AIDA64 stability test.

Honestly I can't think of a reason why I would want a foldable phone. It seems like a huge pain with little upside. I think I much prefer your standard smartphone. Maybe I might change my mind if there is something that can leverage the extra screen space but tbh I find that my phone is plenty big enough for what I use it for.

Yeah, none of this really changes the stakes. The Z Flip 4 (that's the one that costs $999, by the way) and Z Fold 4 are still mainly suited to early adopters who are willing to live with a few quirks to say they have a foldable phone. If I had to buy a Samsung phone right now, I'd pick the S22+ instead.

I do like that the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro offers a titanium case for $449 ($499 with LTE), though. Apple's titanium Series 7 starts at $799; I suspect there's more to the price difference than meets the eye, like material composition, but it still means you can get a light-yet-strong smartwatch for Android that won't break the proverbial bank.

ne0tic reacted to porina in NVIDIA's RTX 4070 will allegedly boost to 2.8GHz offering the same compute power as an RTX 3090 Ti
Random thinking: the 3070 is near enough same gaming perf as 2080 Ti, so there is a kind of precedent for this. 2070 is weaker than a 1080Ti thought. 1070 is about same as 980 Ti. I don't know about older than that. 2 out of 3, not bad, and if this claim is true than that makes it 3 out of 4.

I'm still disappointed I didn't get a 3080 within a year of launch. The claimed 4070 would be good enough for me, not needing 4080 or higher. Let's see what pricing and availability is like.

I have to wonder if the alleged increase in core count is in part due to the silicon surplus nvidia apparently have. Using a bit more to go wider would allow better efficiency per perf.

Pretty much what I expected, provided this is accurate. It's a speed bump that's good for marketing, but not much else. It's somewhat telling that an iPhone 13 from last year should still be faster than the Android phones arriving at the same time as the iPhone 14 line. Or that the iPhone 12 from two years ago is still ahead in some tests.

Qualcomm really needs to step up its game for Gen 2. I know Apple has been outrunning Snapdragons for a while, but it's getting a bit ridiculous. It's as if QC is having an "Intel 14nm+++++++" moment where it's having trouble shipping a meaningful technology upgrade.

    Summary
As part of today’s AMD’s 2022 Financial Analyst Day, the company is offering a short update on their forthcoming Zen 4 CPU architecture. Addressing some post-Computex questions around IPC expectations, AMD is revealing that they expect Zen 4 to offer an 8-10% IPC uplift over Zen 3. AMD is projecting a >25% increase in performance-per-watt with Zen 4 over Zen 3 (based on desktop 16C chips running CineBench). Meanwhile the overall performance improvement stands at >35%, no doubt taking advantage of both the greater performance of the architecture per-thread, and AMD’s previously disclosed higher TDPs. Lastly, Zen 4 V-Cache chips are expected to come in the future too.

I think it's great for AMD to clear the air on the post Computex qualms. While 8-10% increase in IPC sounds underwhelming, greater than 35% overall performance improvement does not, IMO. Combine that with future V-Cache chips and Zen 4 will be a highly competitive product against Intel.
