Depending on where you live one of these NVMe M.2 drives will work great and likely be within budget.

Each of the following 4 NVMe SSDs bench in the same ballpark as the 970 Evo 250 GB at a !generally!  lower  price point while being capacity peers.

    http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest/480586/ADATA-SX8200NP - outperforms it by around 5%
    http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest/482421/WDS250G2X0C-00L350 - nearly the samehttp://ssd.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest/515464/MKNSSDPL250GB-D8 - ~90%
http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest/211350/BPX - pretty much the same as the Mushkin pilot.

They also all compete relatively close to the 970 Evo at 500GB range.

I am building a PC for my brother to use with FL studio/Ableton Live and light video editing. I know I posted on this build already but I have upgraded It and now want to see If anyone can cut the cost on some parts. The priority is music software (FL studio/Abelton Live)  and the video editing will be light and 1080P. 16GB of ram is needed and a large core count processor. graphics card is not a huge concern because only light video editing will be done.
Here is what I am looking at

Dark Rock Pro 4 has improved memory clearance, it has no issue with tall memory modules like G.Skill Trident Z, so Corsair Vengeance should be no problem.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Core_i7_8700K_Coffee_Lake_Memory_Performance_Benchmark_Analysis/ is an interesting read and presents some decent data measuring relative memory performance. It appears that anything above DDR4-2666 CL14 is going to result in less than 4% performance improvement.

Thing is, DDR4-2666 CL14 is pretty expensive so sometimes faster memory is actually a better value.

Evga G3 psu apparently have some issues and are noisier than some competition. Consider instead a Seasonic Focus Plus Gold or Corsair RMx model.

Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB and ML120/ML140 RGB fans are not compatible with Aura Sync. Corsair iCUE software can be used. Not sure it would be worth getting Vengeance Pro RGB memory modules as the Dark Rock Pro pretty much covers the entire memory area on LGA1151 motherboards.

Lighting Node Pro supports up to 4 compatible LED strips and up to 6 compatible RGB fans. In this context I believe compatible essentially means Corsair.

The Meshify C TG includes two stock fans. Use those in the front. They can be connected directly to the motherboard and controlled through its fan utility. If you want to connect them through the Lighting Node Pro (to control through iCUE), you'll have to check out the documentation at https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/CORSAIR-LINK/CORSAIR-Lighting-Node-PRO/p/CL-9011109-WW.

Cablemod.com is the most widely known 3rd party psu cable provider. It has alternate cable sets for all major brands of psu. Evga and Corsair also offer alternate cable sets for some psu.

Sernefarian reacted to pyrojoe34 in CPU speed gets limited to 0.78GHz
I had an issue with my laptop like this where the trouble was a power limitation because I tried using a 60W brick when it wanted a 90W brick. The problem was that even after using a 90W brick, clearing the CMOS, updating/downgrading/reinstalling the bios, reinstalling windows, changing bios/OS power settings, reapplying thermal paste (even though there are no thermal issues), manually OCing, etc... It still refused to ever go back to the proper clock speed. I ended up being able to fix it by using throttlestop and having the service autostart on boot and I now get the expected speeds.

You should make sure there's not another obvious issue first (go through all the possibilities) but this is a last ditch option if you need to. Be careful with it though and make sure you are constantly monitoring temps since it will no longer autothrottle clock speeds and if you get too hot you can destroy the PC.

Due to the nature of what they do drives the cd/dvd writers are also capable of reading them. The market has gotten to the point where it's usually cheaper to get a drive with both read and write capabilities for it's media formats than strictly read only capabilities.

Sernefarian reacted to BRiiTASH in My new MATX Custom Waterloop build
Im building my newest pc, downsizing from my last build which was an x99 platform build with 2x1080's in SLI in a Thermaltake Core X9.
Long story short I killed my i7 5960x by Overclocking it, probably too much voltage for too long. I made the decision to downsize from the CORE X9 as my pump didnt have enough pressure for the 3x480mm rads i had in my loop, so I've downsized to an Inwin 8.0.5.5 Cube MATX case which ironically cost me more to buy than the larger case.
Anyway I sold the dead 5960x and my Asus X99 E WS motherboard and downsized to a 5820k and Asrock X99M Fat1lity motherboard (which i got in a bundle for only £200), which cost me less than I sold my Asus X99 E WS motherboard for (£240).
Anyway for the custom waterloop I bought 2x Nemesis Black Ice 240mm rads for £35 each and 1x Nemesis Black Ice 360mm rad new.
Bought a used XSPC Ion reservoir as I needed something compact and solid which provided multiple mounting options.
Anyway my everything else from my old build is basically being reused; Pump, PSU, Hard Drives, SSDs, Soundcard and one of my GTX 1080's which I hadnt sold yet.
Might be a bit of a downgrade but its a cheap system to hold me over till Threadripper 2 and the new model mobo's and hopefully a new X399 MATX motherboard releases.
Heres my progress so far with what Ive managed to assemble in the case.
I'll be updating this post once I have made some progress, ideally when fiiting the piping.

I'd still want to go for a board with 4 VRM phases for the CPU though. Doesn't have to be the Gigabyte board, but it seems to be one of the cheapest options in mATX size.
Yeah you have to go pretty high-end to get more than 4 phases, and often that's only full ATX size (for no reason; mATX has plenty of room).

Asus in particular lately seems really fond of not using VRM heatsinks. I bet they're really making bank with the 30 cents worth of aluminium they save per board...

Find it somewhat frustrating on the VRM side of thigns that manufacturers generally for each board generation really only have between 2 and 4 VRM designs in their product stacks across a multiple hundred dollar price range that sometimes includes as many as a dozen boards. With the chief difference between differing pricepoints of $100.00 or more sometimes being "you now get heatsinks on it"

Wow, thanks everyone! That's some great info. While researching, I decided to look up all the parts and get the actual amount I paid for my computer, which is $290 in 2016 refurbished on eBay. After all my research I discover my CPU is $15 new. The FirePro is $20 new. My motherboard is $30 refurbished only because it's no longer manufactured. The most expensive part is the case, 80 to a hundred bucks (refurbished) most likely just because it's metal. I look all the parts up on eBay used and learn, wow, I could have built this for about a hundred-hundred and fifty bucks! The CPU is literally $3.25 with Fast N' Free shipping... So now I'm kinda salty :P. Of course, back then I had little knowledge of computers, and that was only my second desktop I had ever had. My previous computers had always been two hundred or four hundred dollar laptops, or a cheap garage sale FREE box one that ran windows XP... So all this time I had been thinking I had an entry level or intermediate gaming system, only to learn that my computer was barely qualified as a computer to run Photoshop. It ran Minecraft at 300 FPS, so long as the game was the only thing on the computer... If I added anything it would go to about 60 or below pretty quick. So now that I know a good deal more, I'm thinking I'll go for more of a budget build. If any of you would like to see it, I'm making a post about that. But for now, this thread will be closing.

Altered a few things in the above list. You stated you already have a dual monitor setup, or at least have another available monitor so I included one that should age nicely, and allow you to snag a mid to high tier GPU and see the FPS benefits of it.

Switched storage arrangement to a OS+Favored Game SSD and a mass storage HDD arrangement.
Moved from single stick single channel @ 16GB to a higher bandwidth 2x8 GB arrangement so your motherboard can run the sticks in dual channel also picked a higher clock speed kit.
Moved motherboard choice to a z370 board that will give you more options if you ever decide to dabble in Overclocking.

These changed the costs from the above list slightly with storage costs increasing ~$12, as as well as motherboard cost increasing another ~$15, RAM cost is $0.01 more. Monitor cost has gone up ~$21.00 with the change at the above benefits along with the downside that you'll at least in the short term be using one of your old monitors.

Would suggest once you have the opportunity to throw a discrete GPU in going with an option with roughyl equivalent performance or greater performance than a GTX 1070. Also as a possible future improvement on your system once you have a dedicated GPU is to move up to something like a 2600X or perhaps even a 2700X. In the future you might also want to look into getting an aftermarket CPU cooler.
