JohnDongus reacted to Nayr438 in What are the drawbacks of disabling memory compression in windows 10
Just higher memory consumption with quicker memory access. It's actually disabled by default on Windows Server 2019.

Alright now you have to spray paint it to finish it off. I have no other input.

I would like to see someone go all out one day and cut out the large bezel and try to fit a slightly larger screen in.
I also did not know that custom bios's were a thing for these laptops.

JohnDongus reacted to wolfsbane3083 in Get a kit?
I recently upgraded to a custom loop and went full EK with 360/280 rad. It ended up being cheaper going for the P360 kit and adding GPU block an extra rad and fittings on afterwards. The parts EK use in their kits are identical to their individual components and in fact the CPU block has better universal support as it has mounting hardware for Intel and AMD included which their individual blocks don't by default.

EKWB and Corsair's watercooling kits seem pretty decent. Either of those will probably be cheaper than doing a completely custom loop.

JohnDongus reacted to Delicieuxz in dual boot windows 10 and win 7
If you're installing these OSes on separate partitions but on the same drive, and if you haven't installed either OS yet, then disable UEFI and install Windows 10 and 7 in legacy / non-UEFI mode. Otherwise, you'll have issues with the Windows 10 boot manager overwriting the Windows 7's one, or something like that. The issue doesn't happen in non-UEFI mode, from my experience.

JohnDongus reacted to 191x7 in Will the i5-5675c fit into a LGA1150
Do not!
The board does not support it.
Here's the CPU support list https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-H81M-D3H-rev-10#support-cpu
Also, even if it could, it's not an upgrade over i5 4460. An upgrade would be a 4 core 8 threads i7 or Xeon.

Apex legends benchmark on my cheap system
CPU: fx 8350 @ 4.6ghz
GPU: HD 7870 2GB @ 1.42V, 1337 Core clock, 1456 Mem Clock
Average FPS was around 75
Apex "Highish" Settings
Im amazed this old hardware is keeping up like this, Got all of the parts used, spent less then $250 on this build that currently serves as a home server.

JohnDongus reacted to BuckGup in PIAs prices are going up, what's a good alternative?
Making your own. It's cheaper, more secure, and is a lot more flexible. You have control of everything so you can install and tweak how you want. Right now I pay $20/year for 1TB/month datacap, 1gigabit/s connection speed, 20Gbs of SSD storage, and it's powerful enough to run a pihole plus VPN on top with 14 concurrent users
