Oh I notice it has Killer software, is that installed?  That often lives up to its name and kills the speed.

It ran fine on any 12gb card and up now it runs fine starting at 8gb sith lowered texture settings.

I'm a bit wary of this, as the fan started to seize on my 12400 stock cooler when running 24/7.  I only noticed because I upgraded it to a 14700K (the none K variant was barely any cheaper so I figured get the potentially better binned part) and kinda got in the habit of spinning the fans with my finger to check how they are holding up and noticed it was no longer freely spinning.

I mean sure it was probably just a fluke, but at least after market coolers you can swap the fans if they fail, and not even need to remove the heatsink.

This sounds premature, if its a cheap ethernet coupler I'd sooner blame that.  I bought a whole batch and they were so cheaply made I would lose the connection entirely if anyone sneezed near them.

Assuming its just being used to make a longer cable, buying a longer cable so you don't need it is the obvious option.

If it still doesn't work then I would wonder if the repeater in fact has no switch and is running those ports over the CPU.

Trial and error.  On Windows I was able to view the voltage curve and see where the voltage starts to really climb, it also shows where on the curve its currently running.

On Linux I just kept tweaking it based on watts vs PPD until it hit somewhere I was happy with.  Of course its best to do this with a higher scoring WU.

The setting is lost between reboots and as it needs to run as root, I didn't automate it.  I should probably get round to adding nvidia-smi to the sudoers file so I can do that.

Alex Atkin UK got a reaction from leadeater in Folder sharing in Windows: holy ****
Only because MacOS isn't sold as a product.

When it comes to file sharing MacOS is orders of magnitude worse, particularly SMB.  It uses their custom version of the protocol that performs like garbage unless the server is also MacOS, as it expects the server to do meta data indexing.  This is made worse by their file browser Finder also being utterly garbage compared to other OS file browsers/requesters.

I spent about a year trying to use a Mac Mini for image work, trying all the SMB tweaks to make it work properly, but I got so sick of it taking minutes to parse a file share directory listing whereas Windows took seconds, I went back to Windows.

Speaking as a primarily Linux user.

Alex Atkin UK reacted to PDifolco in Building a fairly top end PC and I'm stuck on the GPU
You spend too much in Corsairitis (h150i is overpriced, 7800X3D don't need it), a X670E board (B650 is good unless you have a need for the extra PCie lanes), expensive SSD and PSU (but I can understand you want a lasting PSU), and 64GB RAM you don't really need for your use case
Then fall short budget on the main course , the GPU 😛
@TatamiMatt build is pretty good, can suggest this that keeps some of your aesthetics/ "expensive" choices while under 3700AUD

Alex Atkin UK got a reaction from Britishblue in Using a plex / jellyfin server to play my blu rays WITHOUT any ripping
It wont work because jellyfin would need to specifically support that function, which kinda goes against the point of a media "library".  Even if you could spoof it as a file, given it will want to index that file I'd imagine that wouldn't work well.

Besides that, a real Bluray player in my experience gives better picture quality than other devices.  I never bother ripping my Blurays other than to check they don't have manufacturing defects or to AI upscale them (which I mostly only do for DVD).

Alex Atkin UK got a reaction from PraveenMystic in External SSD giving USB 2 speeds
Its possibly a signal integrity issue, storage drives can get very picky about being directly connected and you got lucky that the hub did a good job and boosting the signal, often they make things worse.

The logical thing to do is just get a USB-A to USB-C cable, the less number of adapters, the better the signal integrity.

Alex Atkin UK got a reaction from podkall in Upgrading first gen Ryzen rig with new CPU and GPU
Its just a lot of money to spend for double the performance of what they have now, when the 5800X3D should get them something like 80% of that performance for so much less cost.

Not sure about that board but generally 2x 16GB 3600MT CL18 is about the sweet spot.

Alex Atkin UK got a reaction from Oatplane in Upgrading first gen Ryzen rig with new CPU and GPU
But like he said in the video, better boards aren't much more expensive and that leaves scope for future CPUs if AMD end up pushing the power budget higher.  Though given X3D will likely remain better for gaming, its unlikely on V-Cache chips which I suspect is the rationale they use for half-assing the VRMs on these.

That Gigabyte though, don't most MOSFET shuts down or go pop at around 125C?

Honestly I think that's fine, not worth upgrading the RAM to 3600MT IMO unless you are increasing the capacity too.

Upgrading to AM5 I think would be overkill.

Alex Atkin UK got a reaction from whispous in Were to find to find 4k blueray with no internet?
Bluray players need (needed?  Not sure if they still bother) Internet at least periodically, as they add new encryption codes as hackers break the old ones.

You don't need to keep them connected all the time though, only if a specific title you bought is failing to play so it can update the firmware for the new codes.

I've not had mine online in years now (as BD-LIVE is buggy on The Big Bang Theory, causing it to fail to play if online) and not had any fail to play.

Or do you mean you can't buy from online stores?
