  1. What feels bad is that I shared this thing on my facebook with about 200 friends and till now only 1 guy has shared it. Compare this with hundreds of share a typical "1 like/share = 1 pray for child / cancer / animal / tits / any other bullshit" .Most people are just not aware what this thing actually means and how it can affect them. They will get to know it only when they use Viber and find out that all their prepaid money (95% of India uses Prepad SIM) has gone.
  2. The thing is that if in India one data provider starts something, then all the other data proviers start doing that. It has happened that way in the past. I hope it doesn't happen this time.
  3. Guys, the Net Neutrality violations are now spreading to Indian Subcontinent as well. Airtel is introducing charges for apps using VOIP and government is trying to block porn access. There should be a way to stop this. HIghlights : We can’t call your friends and relatives in foreign countries for free. We can’t use Viber and other apps to stay in touch with friends. You need an extra recharge. We will have to pay Rs. 1.8 (3 US Cents) per minute to Rs. 4.5 (7 US Cents) per minute for voice calls on Skype. About $2 for HD Video Calls over IP. This is a gross violation of the principles of Net Neutrality. Possible things in the future : Pay extra for WhatsApp and messaging apps (Airtel wants you to send SMS!) Pay extra for accessing your app store. (After all, lot of data is consumed by app downloads!) More information on http://netneutrality.in
  4. I use Linux. It does not have viruses, so there is no chance of a virus and yes, there is no Antivirus hogging my RAM in the background.
  5. Am I the only one who still buys Wii just for the Mario franchise games. I cannot resist, both the price of Wii and the fun of the Mario games. I am primarily a PC gamer, but some Wii exclusives are the most fun to play.
  6. Most of the malware have been detected and patched at the very kernel level and any malware on Linux is useless unless it has the sudo or root password which only the user has access to. Linux is prone to viruses, but as like any other operating system, it isn't prone to stupid user mistakes.
  7. Use Linux. There is no such thing as Malware on Linux. Linux is completely secure and doesn't even need a fuckin' anti virus. And yes, none of the program that you install tries to install some toolbar or some free bloatware. If you want to be safe and avoid bloatware, then nothing beats Linux. Linux is only behind in gaming. I hope the day will come soon when Linux would end Microsoft's monopoly on gaming. GabeN believes this. So do we!
  8. As long as Gabe Newell is alive I am sure Steam would never screw with it's customers and we all can believe that Gabe would probably leave Steam is hands of someone not stupid enough to ruin it's whole reputation.
  9. Not everyone the f*ck uses Windows. We Linux users wants some good games too. Anyways a new platform yields a lot more money and Linux users actually do buy games at full price many times, so the profit per user is generally more with Linux. I believe they have their resources in the right place.
  10. With valve's aim towards bringing games to Linux, moving to OpenGL would not surprise me. Especially so that AMD, Nvidia and Intel collaborated together to reduce OpenGL overhead. Everyone is tired of Microsoft's monopoly in gaming industry.
  11. On games that run fine, you are looking at like 15-20% overhead because translating instructions from DirectX to OpenGL slows down things a bit.
  12. As long as they make decent phones, then they have all the right to make the profit. They have invested money and they are ought to make profit from it. Samsung was basically an appliance manufacturer but they made profit and now have expanded into virtually anything you could think of. They have expanded so much only and only because of the profits they make. So, they are not being greedy, they are doing business, making profits and growing their company and this is what any company should do and this is what all companies do. This is what every phone manufacturer does. I have a little bias towards Samsung and it is because they provide every basic thing that a phone should have. They have expandable storage across all their devices from the very lower end to the high end, they have removable batteries which is a very nice addition for Android phones as they hog batteries so much. They still have FM Radio in their smartphones which is appreciated by the audience here at India. They have dual sim version of almost every mid range phone for just a little extra which is a big reason why the India crowd prefers Samsung. The reason why they are so successful is because there are no real deal breakers in Samsung smartphones and they provide every sort of freedom one would need with a smartphone. They believe that if a feature phone can have those features, then a high end phone should definitely have it. Now turn back to someone like HTC who are reporting Loss every quarter. They don't have expandable storage on most of their phones which is a deal breaker for almost everyone in a country like India and China where most of the smartphone sales happen because India and China combines make up for 1/4th of the world population. Alarming but true. HTC on the other hand advertises cloud storage but looking at the poor condition of Internet in India with the average Internet speed just 1 Megabit per second, cloud storage or anything cloud based is virtually a no go. They don't have FM which by the way even a $20 phone has. The build quality of HTC is excellent but there are enough deal breakers already to make people especially in India and China to avoid buying their phones. They now seems to have added the SD card but some things still are there as deal breakers (4 Megapixel camera anyone?)
  13. If you don't like the phone, then you don't have to buy it. As simple as that. Only buy the phone that you want to. Let the companies do their work. The Galaxy S5 still costs the same as the S4 did at launch, so after a year, I would not mind a better hardware and a better display and some more things for the same price. That being said, again if you don't like it then you can just simply ignore it. Maybe it has no meaning for you, but maybe someone would find that device worth the price and he would go and buy it.
  14. He is right when he says that "The need for the terminal has been virtually eliminated.", but that being said, some tasks are still a lot more specific and faster when done from the Terminal. But even without Terminal, the average task is faster on Linux when compared to Windows, especially with awesome distros like Ubuntu and Linux Mint. I believe that you should give Ubuntu a try, you will then know how easy it actually is. People need to remove their misconception about Linux being made for Terminal only which is of course not the case at all.
  15. S4 launched for about $600 unlocked, now it is selling for $400-$450. They are just cutting on their profit margins because they want to empty the stock of S4 because after a year, no one would buy it anyways because it would be outdated by the time. Do you guys really think that if Samsung did not had some profit margins then they would still be as big of a company as it is today. Assets of Samsung are already more than some countries. They have to make profit to keep their company alive and growing. And this is not called greed as other people are calling, it is called running a business and the main two things of running a business is to 1. Make Profits and 2. Expand Business and I can see that Samsung is doing that exceptionally well.
  16. Nice, I was there one day too, using Linux distros in virtual machines when I had no idea that what Linux even was. Then I installed Ubuntu via Wubi as a dual boot and then one day when tinkering with some linux distro, maybe Puppy Linux, I accidently deleted my Windows Partition. Since that day, I haven't got back to Windows because Linux does my stuff for me better than Windows did. Aah.. the good ol' days. Yes, you are right for servers we need just some packages which are common in both Ubuntu and Debian but I am saying that someone who runs Ubuntu might have thought that Ubuntu has more community support. But even though there are less members in Debian community than the Ubuntu community, but one member of Debian community is equal to three of Ubuntu. Debian community is so much more mature than any other community, save for RedHat/Fedora/CentOS . And yes, I would still prefer Debian Wheezy over Ubuntu Server anyday.
  17. LOL! First guy who games on his Granny's rig. Can you share the specs of her rig? LOL! Actually, it's development started in 2003. And while I agree that 60 bucks is a lot for the game, but game is not about the looks, it is about the fun. Super Mario Bros is still worth $50 a copy in my opinion because it is so much fun to play, but the graphics are shit.
  18. WasteLand 2 which reached it's goal within 43 hours on Kickstarter gets an official Linux release via Valve's game distribution platform Steam. This comes in as a good news after many other great games like Star Citizen, Civilization : Beyond Earth, Metro Last Light and many other great games making their way to Linux. Though Wasteland 2 is not a AAA game, but it still has a lot of backing from many fellow gamers as it is the sequel to the original Wasteland from 1988 which was of course a big hit. Let's hope if it fills in the shoes of the original hit. You can get Wasteland 2 from Steam for $59.99 now and it is available for Windows, Mac and Linux including SteamOS of course. http://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/wasteland-2-rpg-finally-offers-a-linux-version-as-promised.3514 http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTY2Njk
  19. You don't need to know terminal to run Ubuntu. Anyone who can run Windows should be able to run Ubuntu. It is just click and follow the instructions. And best of all, it has all the great online guides and support from the community who encourage helping beginners.
  20. Because there are more packages on Ubuntu. Maybe that's why, but yes, I would also prefer Debian Stable over Ubuntu for servers. They are very much similar in terms of almost everything.
  21. You should always search the WinqHQ database where people submit their tests for Windows applications and many times, you can find patches from there which might help run the game. Of course it is not as easy as installing games via Steam, but after a little bit of work the time invested finally pays off. Also in a few years Wine has developed a lot. I mean seriously a lot. It is one of the most active projects and patches are done within a few days and added to the beta release within one or two weeks. Wine shows us all the strength of how active an Open Source project is.
  22. It surely matters as the Linux gaming library is currently building up and it is building great and games like these make the gaming library great and this would surely help to achieve the goal to make Linux as a viable gaming platform. The best thing about Ubuntu is that it is free, so if there are good games on Linux then you could just skip spending 100 dollars on buying Windows and spend that money populating your Steam library instead.
  23. Philiphs who? The light bulb manufacturer?!
  24. 20M is not much of a loss. Looks like the cryptocurrency stuff helped getting AMD back on track.
