Simmytu reacted to TwistedDictator in [GT]AMD claims it will power another gaming device (New Nintendo)
APUs have a lower power consumption and can outperform an Intel chip using its intergated graphics. Console are a gaming platform that require graphic power. If they went for a intel chips they be prepared for shitter graphics unless you add a GPU which will then lead the console to cost higher.

AMD is the only one that can provide powerful GPU+CPU X86 all in a low power packaged in a SOC.

If it bring them business then what wrong with that?

Bloody hell, A lot of people around here who think they know what the outcome should be when we haven't even heard the specifics from any company.  The original article was speculation and hearsay,  not some gold plated facts. Why does everyone get their nickers in a knot over assumption?

If you believe anyone of the above mentioned companies should lose, is being greedy, has no right, or just isn't playing fair then you are a FANBOY.

Well the thing you are missing is AMD current position in the market: a huge part of their revenues - both in the present and in the future - is semi custom designs for third partys.
If AMD is going after their possible customers it would be one of the most stupid things they could ever do. They would just be closing doors - just like what NVIDIA is doing. Apple already closed theirs, Samsung surely doesn't want to use NVIDIA Tegra, and let's see the outcome from ARM, that claimed they will stay beind their Mali IP - and they own the ARM licesing - NVIDIA is just a licensee that can end up with a SoC with no architecture to be legally supported.
So, in my point of view, AMD intervention will be something to secure current and future relationships - something like "we will stay behind you in your GPU IP, and we will get to make semi-custom solutions for some of your product lines". They gurantee security and get to deliver semi-custom solutions.

AMD will never go after any of the big players in the market, specially when they have healthy relationships: Samsung, Apple, etc - because that's where the huge pie slice is, not on a enforced licensing deal.
In the worst possible scenario AMD will take action against NVIDIA, imo.

You can't make a more capable computer for less though. To build something yourself that is equivalent it will cost you £1000 more.

    6 core 3.9GHz Xeon
2 FirePros (each about equivalent to a FirePro W8000)
    16 GB 1833MHz DDR3 RAM
    256GB PCI-E storage

Not to mention the form factor and the level of engineering that went into just cooling the thing. Just on hardware alone, this is a good deal.

If you're making a better deal by choosing things like an i7 4790k, a single Quadro GPU, then that's just saying that this isn't the product for you and that you can build *a* PC for less, not that this is not really good for the price.

I'd rather not get into a "Mac vs PC" fight but I think your methodology is flawed. When comparing two computers like that you shouldn't try to make computer X as similar to computer Y as possible, and then compare how much they cost.
I think it's far more logical to check the price of computer Y, build a computer X that costs the same and then compare the benefits/drawbacks. If a CPU SKU costs 300 dollars more for 0.2GHz increase in clock (everything else being similar) then it's obviously a bad purchase and the money could be better spent elsewhere. In my methodology you would go "wow that's bad value, I should get the cheaper one and then upgrade something else instead" but in your methodology you would go "well I got to match the specs exactly, no matter the cost".

So next time you want to compare the Mac Pro vs a PC, I recommend you completely forget about the specs of the Mac Pro, and then the only thing you should focus on is trying to get the prices to be roughly the same. When you've picked out parts for the PC on PCParkPicker and the prices match, then you compare benefits and drawbacks.

It's the same thing with console comparisons. I don't get why people try to make the PC specs as similar as possible to the consoles when trying to make a "PC vs console" comparison. Who cares if the PC has a quad core if the quad core is better than the octa core?

The only way to get exactly the same specs as a Mac Pro, is to get a Mac Pro, so why bother wasting money to try to get something similar? Instead what you should do is think "is this really worth the price. What can I get for the same price if I build it myself?".

It's all a bit much to swallow really, I wonder if they could re-state their legal claims in the form of a suppository? Much easy to digest that way I think.

No? Nvidia's lawsuit hasn't even mentioned the false benchmarks. Here is the entire timeline of the current Nvidia vs Samsung lawsuit.

    1) Nvidia demands money from Samsung because Qualcomm, ARM and Imagination are allegedly infringing on their GPU patents.
    2) Samsung tells Nvidia to complain to Qualcomm, ARM and Imagination instead, since they are the ones actually making the GPU.
    3) Nvidia files for a ban on pretty much all the high end Samsung devices.
    4) Samsung fires back by accusing Nvidia to cheat in benchmarks, violate a bunch of Samsung's patents and they are also suing Velocity Micro. This is most likely to scare Nvidia into dropping the things they did in step 3.
    5) This is where we are right now.

I have absolutely no idea how you can assume that AMD has anything to do with this. Even IF Samsung and AMD partnered up to sue Nvidia, this was still started by Nvidia.

Here's what AMD should do: Use this as leverage to tell Nvidia and Samsung to sit down before they hurt themselves. "You really want to start this? Guess what, you're ALL infringing on patents A through Z and I suggest everyone plays nice in the sand box before someone loses a limb." Just saying it would put a swift end to this garbage.

Unless your job is a product salesman and you get commission based off what the internet buys and does, why do you care? Why should anyone care? Let people like and use whatever they want for whatever reasons they want. Its not entirely rocket science.

#1 AMD isn't in a partnership with Samsung, Globalfoundries has licensed the 14 LPE and LPP node from Samsung not AMD.
#2 AMD isn't paying Samsung a single dime, Globalfoundries and ONLY Globalfoundries can manufacture AMD CPUs/APUs courtesy of the WSA (Wafer Supply Agreement) with GLoFo. The only time AMD failed to meet that WSA they had to pay a fine of 300 million dollars.
#3 Take your own advice to heart "You should stop making assumptions based on facts that you do not know."

This has to be the most ridiculous conspiracy theory I've ever seen on this forum. You think AMD is paying Samunsg, a company that literally makes 50 times more revenue per year, to go after Nvidia ? when IN FACT it was Nvidia that began the patent war by pressing charges against Samsung and Qualcomm in the first f***ing place ! Do you realize how ridiculous you sound ?

If you like the Windows 7 glass look, and wish it was available in Windows 10 (obviously adapted to the new look), Microsoft is listening, but they'll only do it if the demand is high enough. So if you want Aero back to Windows 10, now is your chance. Earlier the better, as Microsoft can plan accordingly with the GUI design work being done now, later, it will be too late. So if it doesn't happen, don't complain.

This is just ridiculous, phones are getting too thin now, I prefer a heavier, bulkier phone because then I feel more assured about its robustness and that it won't just slip through my hand. I've already nearly dropped a friends iPhone 6 because of how light and thin it is.

This thread is retarded. People saying AMD cards are not worth it, that they melt cases, people complaining about synthetic benchmark scores, people saying AMD cards are too hot. All this when the thread topic is about something positive which they have done...

They are great for gaming, I switched to AMD 7 months back, has been great even using drivers on the beta channel. And they don't run hot either unless you run a reference cooler on a Hawai chip. They are not even much more power hungry compared to Kepler. My 3770K CPU and factory overclocked R9 290 gfx card runs on a 550 watt seasonic PSU with 5 case fans, 2 hard drives, 1 SSD. I even have further overclock headroom, and my whole setup is quiet... 2014 was a great year of PC gaming for me thanks to my R9 290.

In terms of power consumption efficiency Maxwell was a leap forward. That doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with the 2013 AMD chips... It's not like you need a 750 watt PSU and liquid cooling to run Hawai. Also in my experience both Nvidia and AMD have good solid windows drivers, with occasional bugs.

I'll not argue the stable drivers as I've been using beta drivers for along ass time but c'mon now there's no reason to exaggerate the video card itself would die long before hitting 1370c where it may actually melt your case.....  Yes some of their cards run hotter then their Nvidia counter parts but it's not nearly as insane as you make it out to be. The MSI Gaming R9 270x OC 4gb running 1200mhz core 5820mhz memory in my HTPC has never gotten above 70c even with 40c ambient. Nvidia have also had their share of extremely hot cards over the years. I'm no AMD fanboy in general I prefer Nvidia but I'm not a blind Nvidia fanboy either.
