  1. The XC3 Ultra sips power at 340 watts(366 watts overclocked.) compared to cards like the Strix OC that uses 370 watts stock and 450 watts overclocked. So It can use a less powerful PSU. I would go 850 watts since your next card may use more and good PSUs last a long time. EVGA cards with not turn on if there is not sufficient power. If the power is on the boarder line they will sometimes not turn on or just stop working and leave you with a blank screen. Try your PSU first before buying. My 5800x used 124 watts doing all core renderings. For games it used about 80 watts. My 5900x uses less than 100 watts gaming with 4 more cores. Overclocks are not needed for 4k gaming using R7 & 9 CPUs.
  2. I run Fallout 4 Vsynced to 120fps. Over 60fps a character can't jump as high but that is the only issue. Are you using mods or going past build limits? The game is vram sensitive and the crashes it causes are usually when approaching settlements that are close together like Red Rocket and Sanctuary. Also like Skyrim, NPCs are mostly to blame for crashes. One too many can cause a crash. Other crashes are caused by NPCs doing something the games does not like. I stopped having power armor in settlements since some raiders will jump in it and cause a crash. If a settler, minute man or brotherhood NPC jumps in there is no crash. Windows hates this games. The game will crash or go nuts when Windows is doing it thing. You know the crash is coming when the CPU fans ramp up. As your save gets older it needs more recourses and since the game spikes you need about double the resourced that you would think. Again it is about the amount of NPCs you have in the game. I have about 10x NPCs over vanilla so it takes a lot of resources.
  3. Nothing obvious there. I had lots of issues with Steam and older Bethesda games so I use the GoG version.
  4. I modded Oblivion from 2007 until 2011. I found it on an old HDD and copied it to a WD Passport. I have it install on the 5900x/3090 ti rig. It has 244 plugins installed and is stable. Good luck with Skyrim. My LE version is perfect but my SE version suffered with the Anniversary update so some SKSE plugins are still not working.
  5. Have you patched the executable so it uses 4gbs ram(large address aware)?
  6. To me it is what ever works. I usually run GPUs on a test bench before I put them into a case. I try to get them to not run more than 3c hotter so I put some effort into it. Not really. I usually just bought cases with good reviews. With the 2080 tis I only had to add one fan to my cases to get the same temps as the GTX 1080 tis. It is the 30 series that has been a real pain and have given me an education.
  7. I did test several CPUs and a 3080 ti. Here is Horizon Zero Dawn on ultra. It is GPU bound even at 1080p and it does not care about cores. 1080p 1440p 4k i9 9900k(8 core) 155fps 138fps 88fps i9 10900kf(10 core) 157fps 138fps 87fps 5800x(8 core) 156fps 138fps 89fps 5900x(12 core) 156fps 138fps 88fps Shadow of the Tomb Raider is CPU bound at 1080p and likes cores so the 5900x wins. 1080p 1440p 4k i9 9900k(8 core) 169fps 154fps 96fps i9 10900kf(10 core) 189fps 164fps 97fps 5800x(8 core) 198fps 163fps 96fps 5900x(12 core) 211fps 175fps 105fps If I was building now I would not buy a 12th gen Intel. Too many productivity issues with Win 11. So it is either Ryzen with 8 or more cores or Intel i9s 10th or 11th gen.
  8. The 5000d is now used to record YouTube videos by my Son and if it was noisy he would complain. The Dynamics are almost 10c cooler on the GPU with about the same amount of fans in the case. The 5000d got 3 more fans and still was not as cool as the Dynamics. As for noise, The 5000d is set up to be quit since it is used to record YouTube videos. I even had to replace the fans on it's EVGA AIO to get it usable for that purpose. The Dynamics are setup for performance so much louder. Truth be told, my i9 10900kf setup is relatively quit in the Dynamic and my 5900x is loud. They use the same AIO and fans. I use headphones with the 5900x rig. Here is my fan setup.
  9. My point is that it looks better. I only bench at 1080p and on my 1440p and 4k monitors it dose not look good but on the TVs it looks great even at 55". I am also not far away from the screens. I use 55" OLEDs as gaming monitors on 30" deep tables.
  10. To me 1080p looks soft focus. For 1080p I would go with TV technology. 1080p looks good on my LG OLED and IPS TV. Even my 32" 1440p monitor looks pixilated compeered to the TVs. My OLED scaled this 1080p screen to 4k and I put it beside the native 4k version and this is what I got.

  14. It depends. What works with one case may not work with another. That is why I did not mention your AIO fan setup. I know it works in some cases. The air from the GPU gets pushed out of the sides and down in most of my setups. If it went up the CPU increases by a few degrees(my AIOs are on top). With big cards the air from the front fans hit the GPU and cause an air barrier that does not allow air to escape from under the GPU. That is were the 60mm exhaust works. With smaller GPUs like my EVGA XC3 Ultra 3080 ti the hot air does go up so the 60mm fan has no effect. This video shows the issue.
  15. You will need the 5800x if you upgrade your GPU later on. The high end 30 series cards like them and I am sure the 40 series will as well.

  17. I will find out later today since I have FTW3 Ultra 3090 ti coming. It is going into the 5900x rig that has a 1000 watt PSU in it.
  18. Since it looks like the 40 series will need more power I would go 1000 watt. I would also go gen 4 on the SSD. It seems to matter with some productivity apps. I have a Corsair 5000d It was a pain to cool with a 3080/3080 ti in it. With a 2080 ti I had a top mounted AIO with the 3 120mm fans in front. With a Stix 3080 OC it needed side fans. The stock exhaust fan was replaced by a Noctua and a 60mm Noctua fan was added below the GPU. 11 fans in total. For the 30 series I prefer cases that intake below the GPU and have the PSU on the side like the Lian li pc o11 dynamic and the Fractal Design Torrent.
  19. I have done several high end 30 series builds now and found that hot air can get trapped below the GPU. On my cases with the PSU on the bottom like my Corsair 5000d I installed a Noctua 60mm exhaust fan below the GPU. For my 2 gaming computers I now use Lian Li o11 dynamics with the intake fans below the GPU and the top and side as exhaust. They replaced my Corsair 5000d and CM H500 Mesh. The Corsair 5000d worked fine with a EVGA XC3 Ultra 3080 ti(350 watts) and a Strix 3080 OC(370 watts) but failed with FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti(400 watts). The CM H500 Mesh was fine with a EVGA XC3 Ultra 3080 ti(350 watts) but failed with a MSI Gaming X Trio 3080 ti(350 watts). The MSI is a lot larger than the XC3 Ultra so size of the GPU matters. I do have one case that has the AIO as an intake and that is a CM H500M. The AIO is top mounted and the hot air is pulled out of the case by the rear top exhaust fan. I got hotter temps when I flipped the fans.
  20. It depends on your video card and at what resolution. I used a i7 8700k with a GTX 1080 ti and it did about the same frames as my i7 8086k. With a RTX 2080 ti the i7 8086k pulled away. With a 5ghz overclock the i7 8700k could keep up but mine was not stable at that. With the RTX 3080 ti the i7 8086k even with a 5.1ghz overclock could not keep up with my i9 9900k and both were destroyed by my 5800x/5900x at 1080p. It did do better at 4k. I would use one for 4k since with a 5ghz plus overclock it can produce about the same frames as an i9 10900k. The i9 is a lot smoother. It is almost serene compared to an Intel 6 core.
  21. If you do 3D and can afford to get one do it. Why don't you have one now? Were I did consulting most interns that were in school used laptops to do 3D. 3D in games is about getting the most out of less. Since I did 3D for games my meshes were about a 3rd the size of 3D artist I knew that never did 3D for games. Nice. Learn other programs. I mainly used 3D Max. For going out to video/film I used Lightwave. In the real world customers want results the next day so my average rendering time was about 30 seconds(think video games). Interns that took weeks to do projects in school just about went into shock when they were told a project was due at the end of the day. Renderings do fail. That is way I used more than one computer on time sensitive jobs. I still have not gotten out of the habit of having 2 or more computers and one of my 3090s is a spare. The main reason to use a 3090 in 3D is for previewing raytraced lighting. I started doing 3D in 1986 but I only went full time in 2005. It was what I did on the side. I worked with companies that could not afford or did not have enough projects to have an full time artist. I could have gone full time earlier but I wanted to stay freelance and even though I worked with the same company from 2005 to 2018 I was still freelance. At 4k it is about 10 frames in most games. I have a 3080 so I did some game benches. On Friday I will be gamming on a 3090 ti. I was in the market for another 3090 and it was cheaper by about $100. I would use both. While your 3090 rig is doing marathon renderings you can model and do textures with the 3080 rig. My minimum for 3D is 2 computers.
  22. I think the market changed with the 20 series. In 2018 I bought a FTW3 Ultra 2080 ti from EVGA for $1500. In 2021 I bought a FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti for $1450. It was the same with my VGA XC cards. XC 2080 ti $1,200. XC3 Ultra 3080 ti $1,200. The FTW3 Ultra 2080 ti replaced 2x GTX 1080 tis in SLI. So SLI stopped being a thing and the only card that can replace it cost the same as two GTX 1080 tis. Nvidia was not taking a risk with the 2080 ti since there was already a base that payed that kind of money for the performance. Also when I bought 980 tis 1080 ti and 2080 tis they were the top of the gaming line and Titans were considered productivity cards. All the people I knew that did video for a living had Titans. Now the Titans have gone but in name only and they have morphed into RTX 3090 cards. Now people that were happy with the xx80 ti as the top of the line want xx90 tis. If they were called Titan would be less of a market for them.
  23. I would go for a 10th/11th gen Intel with 8 or more cores or a Ryzen 5000 with 8 or more cores. I use i9 10900ks that have 10 cores. I do like the 5900x for productivity but I have not used it enough to recommend it yet. Don't get anything that is not PCIe 4 especially if you plan to us 8k cameras. For a video card the amount of vram is more important than power so I would pick a used 11gb model over a new 8gb model. On the high end vram is everything. A lot of your old build is perfect for the new one so you won't need s CPU cooler or PSU. You may want to keep it. I used a computer for 3D and an older one for 2D. It cuts out a lot of the down time when rendering.
  24. To me it is just another 3090 with improvements that the original 3090 should have had. Vram on one side of the card. It was my biggest worry so instead of buying a top performing card I went for features the address the vram issue. Both of my 3090s are MSI Gaming X Trios. They have heat pipes on the backplate to help keep vram temps under control. Larger cooler. Most 3080 ti/3090s use the same cooler as the 3080s but are hotter cards. Hopefully GN got it right and the card is relatively cool. I bought one. It is the EVGA FTW3 Ultra. I was in the market for another 3090 and it was about $100 cheaper than my last 3090.
