  1. I am a retired freelance 3D artist/designer. It started as a way to pay for computer hardware way back in the 80s but in the end it paid for everything.
  2. On my i7 6700k I used a Noctua NH-U14s. I was a hot chip but it was tamed by that cooler.
  3. FTW3s are performance cards so they use more power. For example: My EVGA XC 2080 ti used 260 watts stock and the FTW3 Ultra version used 300 watts. My EVGA XC3 Ultra 3080 ti uses 350 watts stock and the FTW3 Ultra version uses 400 watts. Sometimes yes but not usually an issue with a 3060. It depends on your currant cooling solution.
  4. Some cards blow up. Before the 30 series one in ten did for me. All EVGA. My EVGA 970 ACX2 was fine for the 3 years I had it. One of my EVGA 980 ti SC+ did blow up but there was 45 day left on the warranty so it got replaced. GPUs fail. I always keep an older GPU as a spare. The GTX 980 ti that EVGA sent me to replace the one that blow up was used as a spare for the 10 and 20 series. I still have. They left out the pads on them. I had one and it was fine stock but too hot overclocked. They sent me a set of pads. It was named SC and it was replaced by a SC2. The GTX 1080 ti was called SC2 as well.
  5. Buying a 2 to 4 year old car is great as long as you pay cash. If you finance through a dealer it is cheaper to by new. It's the difference in interest. I just lease cars now so it is a new one every 2 to 3 years. I keep phones until they die so I am still on a Samsung Galaxy 6s. I will be getting the Galaxy 22 this year but I will just do what ever deal Verizon has.
  6. Yes. Get the GOG version. I have the Steam version as well but had issues with it. I have Fallout 3 running as well. It is the GOG version.
  7. My 3090 ti has a 1000 watt recommendation and I am using a 1000 watt PSU. I usually buy PSUs to handle 2 cards so 2x 1080 ti = 1000 watts, 2080 ti = 1300 watt PSU. So my next PSU will be 1600 watts. I could be a motherboard issue. My EVGA FTW3 Ultra 2080 ti did not like 850 watt PSUs and sometimes would not turn on. The 2 systems used ASUS Hero X boards and were fine with 1000 watt PSUs. I have another computer with a Gigabyte motherboard and it was fine with 850 watts with a 2080 ti. To test get another PSU. It can be 850 watts and power the 3080 with it and have the 3090ti use the 1200 watt PSU. I was a freelance 3D artist for about 3 decades and I have spare everything so this sort of thing is easy for me to do.
  8. I have really never cared what a GPU looked like but I do know that my Strix 3080 White OC is the nicest looking card I have ever owned. The most unique card this gen is the Gundam version. If one had come up I was willing to pay $200 more.
  9. https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/5fed1c53 https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/a6741ee1 The TUF VG27WQ1B is the newer version. I would go with the VG27WQ since it has a stand that pivots. Both are 8 bit so not a good pick for image editing. I would not buy 8 bit panel but do more than game and unless a VA panel is 4k I am not interested(poor text). I would go with an TUF VG27AQL1A 27" It is IPS and 10 bit. https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/2b331e5c
  10. I mod games or play building games. I started playing computer games in the 80s and back then I wrote them. That evolved into just doing the graphics. I learned how to do 3D and that ended up being what I did for a living. In 1998 I started painting planes in MS Flight Simulator and in 2000 it was MS Train Simulator as well. I even did payware with an indie group. I found it very relaxing. By 2005 I was a full time 3D artist so I stopped doing my own mods and start enjoying other peoples work so I started modding Bethesda's Oblivion, then later Skyrim. Now I am playing Space Engineers. it is building space ships with modded guns, shields and enemies. I still buy AAA games but I am a bit board with them right now so it is the building games until that changes.
  11. I have mine on top as well. All the RGB fans are exhausting out of the case. The 5900x does R20 in the 60s so the setup is not effecting the CPU. I will install the 3rd fan at some point just for looks. It is not needed.
  12. I run games that came out on disk in the 90s with an i9 10900kf/3090 with no issue using Windows 10. I get them from GOG when they are on sale from 3 to 5 dollars. One of my favorites is X-Com: UFO Defense that came out in 1993. It uses Dosbox and with a little tweaking of the ini I had it working on an ultra wide monitor. They have the old Tomb Raiders as well. I did have a retro rig years ago but with DosBox and GOGs I no longer have the need.
  13. For the best cooling with an air cooled GPUs in a Dynamic, intake should be below the GPU and the top and side should be exhaust. One of my non XL Dynamics has a RTX 3090 it. It is at 68c running Heaven at 4k. The one with a 3090 is at 75c. The one with the 3090 only has one intake fan(Noctua NF-A12X25) and the one with the 3090 ti uses 2 of the same fans. I have bought more fans to populate them but have not installed them yet. I would not be to worried with 77c but you might want to flip some fans to see if there is a difference.
  14. I don't think Future proofing is a thing. I used an i7 2600k from 2011 to 2018 but when I bought it I did not think it would last since I bought new CPUs in 2006, 7, 8, 9 and 2010. It just turned out that way. I thought going from a GTX 1080 ti to a RTX 2080 ti and then a 3080 ti were good upgrades. SOTTR is a good example at 1440p. All with a i7 8086k. 1440p GTX 1080 ti = 84fps RTX 2080 ti = 119fps 35 more frames RTX 3080 ti = 147fps 28 more frames Even better with a modern CPU like the 5900x 5900x RTX 3080 ti = 175fps I think a lot of the advice given is short on practical experience so I file it under opinion. I try to stick with what I have had experience with. So I may comment on a 3080 or 5800x post since I have owned them but have never used a 3060 or 3600x so I usually don't comment. That allows me to avoid foot-in-mouth disease most of the time.
  15. I look for the fraise "retail box" in the descriptions. They are also better for resale.
  16. They(PGA) are not fragile. What will replace them on AMD CPUs is(LGA). I have never had an issue with pins and I have been building PCs for about as long as there as been PCs. I had an eyelash take out a motherboard and CPU on my Q9550 build. So for me it has been 3 LGA to 0 PGA loses.
  17. My point was that even a 980 is weak compared to modern cards and that a 30 series would be a good upgrade for you. The high end 40 series cards will come out first and the overs later on so it may not be until 2023r that you get a card and if it is a repeat of the 30 series, 2024. Right now on the EVGA web site you can get a RTX 3080 10gs for $909. If mining picks up again the opportunity will be gone. Time will tell.
  18. I have a MSI Gaming X Trio 3080 ti and it is a nice cool card that will have no issues in a Dynamic XL. Mine was in a standard Dynamic and it only needed one intake fan below it to keep it cool. I like the 5800x/5900x for the 3080 ti. They make for a balanced system. As for Intel there are still issues with apps like Primer with Windows 11 so I am giving it a pass for now.
  19. These are on my favorites list now. Tech Deals(Byte Size Tech) Pauls Hardware Linus Tech Tips Tech Yes City Gamers Nexus JayzTwoCents KitGuruTech The Tech Chap eTeknix Gear Seekers O!Technology der8auer EN Actually Hardcore Overclocking Some of the channels are about hype to get clicks so I view there opinions with lots of grains of salt.
  20. The last game I bought was Eden Ring and before that it was Total War Warhammer 3. So it is probably the type of games I play. Right now I am playing Space Engineers. I did SLI with the 980 ti and 1080 ti as well but that ended with the 2080 ti. I ran an ultrawide at the same time that used a single card. An average game for me is Horizon Zero Dawn. In the bench the 3090 ti does 98fps on ultra. I am about 110 fames with my setting and I am fine with that. A harder game is Assassin's Creed Valhalla and I do 84fps in the bench with my settings at 4k. On ultra high the 3090 ti does 69fps average. So for me it depends on the needs of future games like Starfield whether I get a 40 series or not. The only series I have skipped so far was the 7th series. With my setups I can't go past 55" and I am not interested in a panels that aren't OLED for gaming so no 8k for me until there are 55" 8k OLEDs under $3500.
  21. It reminds me of the people I knew bragging about their 401k before the crash or me with my property before 2008. I retired on a good old fashion pension and my property still has not recovered all the way.
  22. I started 4k gaming with a Samsung 28" TN monitor in 2015 with a 980. The 980 was replaced with a 980 ti as soon as it came out. I could play an un modded Fallout 4 at 4k but with Witcher 3 I had to drop the resolution to 1440p. I did have a GTX 680 4gb and that was bought for the vram. My modded Skyrim LE needed it. I think the state of crypto will dictate how long it will take to get a card as well. For the first time ever I don't care. It took me 3 months to get my first 1080 ti at MSRP and only a 1 month to get a 2080 ti. My first 3080 ti at MSRP was at launch thanks to the Newegg Shuffle but it took 8 months for my 3080 and 12 months for the first 3090. I use LG OLEDs so getting 30 series cards was a must for HDMI 2.1(4k 120hz) but not enough to pay more. I was not exactly suffering using 2080 tis.
  23. Since I started 4k gaming early I was not happy with the performance of the 9th, 10th and 20 series GPUs. For the 9th and 10th I used SLI. I am happy with the 30 series performance wise. So for the first time ever I really don't need a better performing card. I never tested my GTX 970 with a modern title but I did test my GTX 980 with Shadow of the tomb Raider at the highest preset before selling it. This is also with different CPUs 1080p GTX 980/i7 8086k 62fps EVGA SC GTX 980 ti/i7 8086k 78fps EVGA SC GTX 1080/i7 8086k 103fps EVGA SC GTX 1080 ti/i7 8086k 123fps EVGA SC2 RTX 2080 ti/i7 8086k 148fps EVGA FTW3 Ultra RTX 2080 ti/5800x 160fps EVGA FTW3 Ultra RTX 3080 ti/5800x 183fps EVGA XC3 Ultra RTX 3080 ti/5800x 198fps EVGA FTW3 Ultra RTX 3080 ti/5900x 211fps EVGA FTW3 Ultra RTX 3090 ti/5900x 214fps EVGA FTW3 Ultra The 3080 ti is the end of the line for the 5900x at 1080p in this game since at higher resolutions the gap is higher. 1980p 1440p 4k RTX 3080 ti/5900x 211fps 175fps 104fps EVGA FTW3 Ultra RTX 3090 ti/5900x 214fps 188fps 116fps EVGA FTW3 Ultra The RTX 3070 to 3080 ti type performance is what your CPU is best at weather you get it form the 30 or 40 series. The only thing that will change is the price.
  24. What I did to get vram temperatures well below 90c in a Lian Li Dynamic was to use Noctua NF a12x25 fans below the GPU. All the rest of the fans in the system are exhaust with ambient at 21.7c For the EVGA FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti, 76c max in Time Spy(2 fans) For the MSI Gaming X Trio 3080 ti, 82c max in Time Spy(1 fan) For the MSI Gaming X Trio 3090, 78c max in Time Spy(1 fan) For the EVGA FTW3 Ultra 3090 ti, 68c max in Time Spy(2 fans)
  25. All my resent GPU issues turned out to be power related. One was a bad 8 pin PCIe cable and the other was a bad 24 pin motherboard cable. Both were on PSUs that were less that a year old and both ran perfectly for about 6 months. When I used GPU to test that had less power draw the issues did not show up. The cards worked fine in other systems(I have 5 in the house) so it was a lot easier to narrow down. What I did was buy a new set of PSU cables and replace all of them. If that was a fix I threw out all the old cables. I am really paranoid about type stuff so the MSI 3090 I have listed below is a spare for one in a dedicated rendering rig.
