I'm thinking of upgrading from my i5-7600k to i7 8700k.

The 8700k isn't any better in games than the 7700k and that isn't much better than the 7600k and no MB change over, I run a 7490k in my current rig and it's doing fine for rendering and gaming with two old gtx780's.
