    Globally, electricity production is getting greener as time passes. Running an EV on coal is about the same as running a diesel in CO2 terms. However once the coal plant gets shuttered the EV magically becomes cleaner. The diesel does not, infact the diesel gets worse with time as its various emissions control systems degrade. Its also far easier to clean up a small number of power stations, than millions of cars. The grid average CO2 figures for most developed countries are already significantly below what you'd achieve running pure coal, which means EV's are already significantly ahead. Varies from country to country ofcourse, some are much better than others.

    I also find it amusingly disingenuous to single out lithium mining, and ignore the environmental damage caused by the oil industry? Existing cars dont run on unicorn farts. The incumbent technology is already horrible.

    It will depend on the specific AIC, however some do exist which take additional power:

    And as a result can supply a wide range of USB-PD outputs.
     
    Delock has a wide variety of cards with various configurations.
     
    100MB/sec transferring to a hard drive is about all you'll get, especially a smaller/older one.

    Zen+ is starting to show its age now, and dropping in a fast GPU will likely result in it being held back by the CPU.
     
    That said 5800x(/3d) and a 6900xt are probably in budget and will make a real nice system.
     
    I doubt its worth the step to AM5 vs just dropping in a 5800.
     
    However given your games etc, it might make more sense to do something a bit half-way, eg a 5600/5700x and a 6600xt or 6700xt would only cost £500ish, and still give a huge upgrade.

    all components will operate at full speed, the only time an issue would occur is if that combined link is saturated, which isnt likely under normal use. And even then, the devices would simply share the bandwidth while it was busy, and then return to normal afterwards.

    yeah, even copying between them, its unlikely either drive can sustain 2GB/sec anyway.

    You basically need to start again.
     
    The CPU/Mobo/RAM is 10 years old and not upgradable in any way. Its also slow enough that swapping in a faster GPU is likely to be wasted.
     
    The storage needs sorted out, but m.2 wont boot on a machine that old. You could buy a SATA SSD, but you'll probably want m.2 in a newer system.
     
    GPU is old, but probably passable.
     
    If it were me, trying to upgrade it on a budget, i'd find myself a cheap B450(or B550 if you find one cheap) motherboard, 16gb of DDR4 and a Ryzen 5600. You can probably get that lot for 200bucks if you shop around on ebay. More like 250 if you go all new. Add in a 512gb or 1TB m.2 SSD and you have a solid starting point. Then sell off your old CPU/Mobo/RAM to recoup maybe 100bucks. At that point you've got a solid base, and you can focus on a GPU upgrade next.
     
    Probably something like a 5700xt/2060super/2070 would be a sensible step up giving about 50% more performance.

    It does feel a little overkill...
     
    A lot of folks are running fairly low power mini-PC's with Gemini Lake or similar "Atom" class CPU's as routers without issue even at gigabit speeds.
     
    I would check out r/pfsense on reddit and get some examples
     
    Is the machine just doing pure NAT? or are you doing a lot of packet shaping/analysis or VPN?
     
    I use a Wyse 5070 for instance (the extended one can take a PCIe NIC) and while i dont have gigabit internet, i've seen a few reports of people using those on gigabit connections no probs. And it ticks along at 6w rather than 25+ you'll likely find a desktop PC will use.

    See my recent post about rebuilding my server to use more modern hardware. I would definitely recommend the 12400/B660 route over X99, especially at the same cost.

    Nothing your doing is particularly CPU hungry and the 12400 with its great single thread will chomp thru Minecraft, whereas those old Xeons might even be slower than your existing CPU due to lower clocks! 
    And ofcourse, if you need more CPU down the line, you can drop in a 12700/13700 etc etc

    For 10m you can just use a "normal" active USB3 extension cable like this:

    They're pretty cheap. Stick a decent powered hub on the end for all your devices and your sorted. Lindy stuff is solid. You reach a limit of around 15m with that approach though AFAIK. Beyond there your into expensive fibreoptic solutions.
     
    For Displayport your in a sort of zone where you might get away with a basic/copper cable, but might need fibreoptics. Basically depends on screen resolution. Personally i'd get a cheaper copper based cable and try it.

    if its a mechanical hard drive and not an SSD, then yep the computer will be a complete slug.
     
    Crucial MX500 is usually a solid option for a reasonable sata ssd.

    Personally, i simply wouldnt bother. Any decent GPU wont fit in the SFF case (low profile cards exist but they tend to be comparatively expensive and slow) and the PSU is not powerful enough and cant easily be upgraded.
     
    Sell the 790 as is, and go find yourself a cheap workstation, Dell T3610, HP Z420 etc.
     
    Find one with at least 6 cores (or buy a low end one and pickup a 6 core chip for it)
     
    Then install your GPU.
     
    The workstations come with GPU ready power supplies and are extremely cheap on ebay etc if you shop around for a good deal.
     
    Linus did a video on the Z420 recently, check it out. I've done this route myself with a T3610 too.

    i mean, as numbering systems go, its not toooo bad?
     
    First one or two digits are series, last two are model within that series.
     
    the only hiccup is that they jumped from 10 to 16 to 20 for *reasons*. Outwith that, the numbering looks fairly sane, and generally a new generation shifts the performance down one notch (roughly)
     
    So a 1080 ~= 2070 ~= 3060
     
    You can even go further back: 980ti ~= 1070 ~= 2060 ~= 3050 etc etc.
     
    the 16 series was a fill-in for low end 20 series cards which didnt have raytracing cores, and they essentially slot in below the 2060, so a 1660 could be a "2050" and a 1650 could be a "2040" if you like.

    how is the NAS drive mounted?
     
    over CIFS/SMB?
     
    Some software wont like "drives" mounted via CIFS/SMB as they dont act like real storage devices. It would make sense that something like anti-cheat might act oddly running from a drive that doesnt really exist....
     
    You could try mounting via iSCSI?

    Tether the phone to the TV via hot spot, or employ a "4G/5G Router". Surely a FAR better end result than having to drag a cable out and plug your phone in constantly?!
     
    It seems the "bug" has also broken AirPlay to Apple TV, which suggests its probably not a bug, but an intentional "feature". Ofcourse it could be a bug, but given it effects airplay as well as this shonky HDMI thing, its not small in scope and you would have expected Apple to have sorted it out quickly. If they havent, theres probably a reason for it. I dont know the reason, Apple probably does.
     
    DRM sucks, but if you choose to play in that ecosystem, then you have to deal with its suckyness.

    i just coil them up. Maybe add a tie. But my box of cables got so big that it became multiple boxes, so i went to ikea, got some of the smaller plastic SAMLA boxes, and sorted the cables into type. Now i've got a tray for "display cables" a tray for "USB" a tray for "ethernet" etc etc.
     
    Makes things much easier to find, and they stack neatly together on a shelf.

    yeah, some vaugely googled cinebench figures suggests the 2950x would manage about 1.1k single thread and 18k MT, the 12400 on the other hand managing 1.6k single and 12k MT. The massive 50% boost in ST means that even the MT performance isnt that bad despite dropping from 16 or 6 cores.
     
    However the 2950x was always seriously overkill. I had initially intended to run a "2 gamers 1 cpu" style arrangement, with my personal desktop running as a VM inside the server, hence the W5000 GPU i had popped in there for testing some time ago. I had planned to pin 6 or 8 CPU cores permanently to that VM to ensure maximum performance for that client VM. I had it all working, but I decided after a while not to bother migrating over to it. Mostly because i realised that from time to time i like to tinker with the server, and having my main PC also offline at the same time would be really annoying. Also the required long (expensive!) displayport cables that i was going to require put me off.
     
    The server runs a few different VM's and services. local fileserver being its core role, but there is a VM running Jellyfin, another VM hosting NZBGet and associated parts, a VM running home assistant, a docker running the unifi controller, and a VM for some CCTV NVR software that isnt quite configured yet but is coming soon. Theres also an EmonCMS instance running on there for my local energy logging system.
     
    I suspect the 12400 will have sped things up across the board, especially as the various VM's only have access to a handful of cores. For example unrar and parity checking in NZBGet is now likely faster with more CPU behind it. I havent actually measured ofcourse, but the system was never heavily loaded across all the cores, so the single thread gains will be the biggest impact.
     
    A 12100 will probably have done the job. But i wanted a bit of overhead, and because i needed the iGPU, the cost difference between a 12400 and 12100 wasnt that big, most of the cheap 12100 supply seems to be the F sku without GPU.

    its also flat and not flucutating, so the card certainly isnt responding to that.
     
    Load drops right down, suggesting the GPU isnt being given any work to do.

    the IMC on the 2600x might simply not be up to the job. Try XMP on but clocked at 2933 instead of 3200 and see what happens.

    what exactly are you trying to achieve? These programs are mostly just nonsense scams. Windows can manage its page file by itself.
