  1. @NikolakiH I got Tailscale working and setting up a VLAN for testing. Been able to isolate the remote box, restricting ping in with my local IPs but working with Tailnet IP. Thanks for the info to provide the confidence to make it work. Cheers.
  2. @NikolakiH Oh that's awesome thank you. To be honest I didn't check the documentation on their site because usually it goes above my head but the way you described the tailnet so well I'll give it a go. That makes total sense and was actually I think the key piece of their deal I was missing. If you don't mind me asking one more question...If I set up a VLAN on my Dream Machine and would that mimic the box being off the LAN? I could then throw a couple one or two computer on that VLAN to test is my hope. Thank you so much for your quick reply. It's giving me the confidence to dive in. Much appreciated.
  3. TLDR: Can I use Tailscale to access a remote Unraid NAS to back up my Home Unraid NAS and access the remote LAN's Windows Shared Network through a VM on the Remote Unraid NAS. If so, does anyone have any guides or experience doing this? I have a new Unraid server built that I want to use as an offsite backup. This will be placed at my mother's house. I want to also be able to access her networked computers and devices (with her permission of course). The main reason to access her computer is to help maintain her picture library. She goes nuts taking pictures with her phone, emailing them to herself and then creating an exponential number of folders to "organize" her pictures. This usually occurs because she'll download the zip file from gmail, but then every time she wants to look at the pics she extracts them....every time. So there are nested folders all over the place on her PC. I'm sure you all have dealt with this. After spending a weekend onsite fixing this for her I vowed to never do so again by checking in on her PC every now and then and fixing it, then pointing her to a photo library she can be confident in. Tailscale seems to be a the newest hotness and I'm hoping it can be used in this solution so port forwarding, weird DNS stuff and all that is not required. Would I be able to set up Talescale so that: My Home Unraid server can be connected to Mom's Unraid server for period backups of documents, pictures and other valuable data using rsync. Pretty sure this is possible but I haven't found any guides for doing it on Unraid. In order to access her networked computers file systems with out using remote desktop (I don't like it and will freak her out if I just take over her PC) I was thinking of setting up a Windows VM on the remote Unraid box and using that access her shared network files. Is this doable with Tailscale? If this was set up properly would I be setting up a VPN connect between my Windows PC and the VM? Or would I access the Unraid box through Tailscale then run the VM through the VM Console(VNC). Would I then have access to her network since that VM should be on that local area network? Does that make sense? Am I making this too difficult? I know remote desk top would work but I also want to play around with Tailscale and VPNs to learn more about them. Thanks!
  4. Okay thanks wanted to be sure I wasn't going a little crazy. Appreciate the insight
  5. After watching the recent SC on the Elite Dragonfly G4. I am thoroughly confused. First off I don't see any "Elites" on HPs website. Maybe I didn't look hard enough but either way as this would be a laptop for my kid to take to college I didn't go too deep for the high end one Alex reviewed. I did find what I assume is a non-Elite version that's on sale...here - HP Dragonfly 13.5 inch G4 Notebook PC Wolf Pro Security Edition. I also found the customizable version that includes the WLED that starts at $2548 and other than the display I can't see any real difference. HP Dragonfly Notebook PC G4 - Customizable Can anyone make head or tails of the difference between the two links I provided? Other than the display. Is the non-customizable one a steal or a dud. What's the big difference between these two (assuming they are somewhat comparable) and the Elite G4 that Alex reviewed on SC. The one on sale seems great and I want to jump on it if possible and no miss out but also want to keep looking if its lipstick on a porcine. Thanks!
  6. Nice thanks. Yeah personal experience goes a long way so I appreciate you providing the feed back. I'll add to the list.
  7. Hello brain trust. I'm working on an unraid backup server to place in my mother's house two states away. Got is the "1" in 3-2-1 backups so not looking for anything crazy. I'm pretty sure I want IPMI available so 1) my mom doesn't have to deal with the server at all and 2) cool to learn (homelab like). Also mini-itx so as not to take up too much space (I think this is the right way to go). So, does anyone have any suggestions for a not too expensive Mini-ITX board with IPMI that pairs nicely with an also in expense CPU? The choices and feature list from SuperMicro is overwhelming. Just needs to run unraid and be able to process backups. No media server or other dockers will likely be utilized (other than wireguard or equivalent and anything else needed for backup processing) Have to go to Ebay or Facebook market place is perfectly fine so again of MB is not really a concern just want affordable(ish) and capable. Thanks! PS If you all think I've hamstrung myself with mini-itx please let me know....Thank you thank you.
  8. Oh I didn't catch that. Looks like the skus that have full height and length support (with a riser) are those proprietary ones. The ATX support the low profile. That makes sense. More research to do. Thanks for pointing that out I wouldn't have realized for awhile I'm sure. Thanks again for all the helpful info.
  9. @skimmilk5 I think I want the SuperChassis 826BE1C-R920WB - link. The combo of 12 bays (future expansion), full height and length slots (future transcoding GPU) and low profile (NIC, SAS card, etc) and 920W (all the drive and potential GPU seems to be about right. Think any of it is overkill? Price new seems around $1200 new. Although I'm having trouble finding options for new purchases from known (by me) websites. Have you had experience buying used SuperMicro chassis? Any warning signs or issues there?
  10. @skimmilk5 I've been digging in deeper into all the suggestions you made, chassis, board and cables and whoa is it a rabbit hole...but I love rabbit holes, fits my compulsions well. My wife thanks you (kappa) for what I'm about to do to our unfinished basement. Thanks again for all the details, you've nailed my needs and wants exactly. Happy New Year!
  11. LOL you are 100% correct. I'll leave it though for the luls. Thank you so much for the insight and suggestions I sounds like its right on the road I'm looking for. I'll research it for sure. My only issue with this solution would be the size. I'll potentially have to find another location for the server and/or various ways to mount it to wall or in a closet. Thanks again. I'll take any more suggestions though if anyone has another. Granted skimmilk5 nailed pretty much all my asks though.
  12. Okay here's the situation that I need a bunch of tech nerds (like myself but smarter and more experienced) to help me with if you are so inclined. I currently run UNRAID mostly as a plex server, but also PC backups, network storage and sandbox for whatever comes to mind. My current set up is built in this case with an i7-8700K on a PRIME Z370-A and 16GB of DDR4. I have 1x 500GB SSD cache (5 years old) and after some drive swapping will have an 1x 8GB Parity, 1x 8GB Data, and 4x 4GB Data. The 8GB are new the 4GB are between 3-5 years old. I'd say I hit the drive with a moderate amount of reads and writes. Nothing too crazy. My user count is high but only a few consistently use Plex. Maybe 10 hours per day is consumed around 50% of the time. I had to add a SATA expansion card as the above totals 7x SATA drives. I had installed a hot swap enclosure but it started having problems after a couple of years so I moved all the drives into mounting locations with in the case above. This has been fine except There's no more room for drives unless I pull the hot swap enclosure out and I don't think I have the hardware anymore to allow more drives to be installed in its place. I could figure it out but the issue I've run up against, or I believe I have run up against is power. I'm currently out of 15 pin power connectors and the ones I am using are all using each connector in the daisy chain. While everything is running perfectly fine, it has been running like that for over 5 years and I think I want to either upgrade or at least set myself up to be able to expand a bit. So....anyone have any suggestions how where I may go. Some thoughts I've had are Use some 1 or 2U drive enclosure solution that will provide more options for drives with power budgets and connectors taken into account in the design. If something like this is used how is it connect to the head unit, what would be required, is the configuration work a nightmare. Is there a way to do this with out create a jet engine server closet? Is my current case just fine and maybe I upgrade my power supply? If so are there ones with extra 15 pin SATA connectors Maybe it behooves me to shift to new tech and add M.2 clearing up some SATA connectors and power (and allow for dual cache). Anyone have mind blowing experiences upgrading in this way? Any suggestions that come to mind with my above set up that would be better a half decade after I built it. Thank you so much for your time. GB = TB. Thanks Skimmilk5
  13. Saw this in the Facebook wild. Seems suss. https://www.voltacharger.com/
  14. @Falcon1986 ISP Cable Model -> Cat-5E -> Netgear WNDR3400v3 "Router" (wifi disabled) Router -> Cat-5E -> TP Link TL-SG1024 "Switch" Router -> Cat-5E -> Unraid Server Router -> Cat-5E -> Wall Jack -> Cat-5E -> Netgear Nighthawk R7800 "Wifi" Router -> Cat-5E -> TP Link TL-SG105 "Switch2" Switch2 -> Cat-5E -> PC Switch2 -> Cat-5E -> Laptop Switch -> Cat-5E -> Wall Jack -> Cat-5E -> TP Link TL-SG1024 "Switch3" Switch3 -> Cat-5E -> PC Switch3 -> Cat-5E -> Xbox Switch3 -> Cat-5E -> PS4 Switch -> Cat-5E -> Wall Jack -> Cat-5E -> TP Link TL-SG1024 "Switch4" Switch4 -> Cat-5E -> PC Switch4 -> Cat-5E -> Xbox Switch4 -> Cat-5E -> PS4 Wifi -> 9 Fire/Roku Stick/TV Wifi -> 6 Amazon Echo/Dots/Shows (+ 2 additional for speakers when having parties) Wifi -> 4 iPhones/3 iPads Wifi -> 4 Ring Cameras/Doorbells (soon to be 5) Wifi -> 4 smart plugs right now 10+ additional around Christmas Wifi -> 2 Laptops + 1 Chromebook I think i'm going to be sick. Except for the wall jacks indicated all other cat-5es are pre-made Monoprice cables of varying lengths. 2 feet to 30 feet. I had this same set up at my old house and never had an issue. Which certainly leads me to believe its the ISP but again still figure I'm pushing the boundary on a Walmart routers.
  15. I don't know for certain if its the router. The one I posted is only being used for its wifi....I have another router connected to the modem and then to a switch. The Nightharwk is running out of the switch to provide the wife for the house. Modem, router, switch and server are together in a closet and the Nighthawk is central on the second floor to cover the house. I'll try to take find the modem UI, good idea. Asking for a good router to kill two birds....I already wanted to upgrade to a good quality one with a firewall and that can handle well over 45 connection (future proof). And if it so happens ot solve my drop problem all the better. The ISP has checked all the lines, replaced some hardware at the street and given me a new modem. I want to be sure its not my hardware before escalating with them.
