  1. Nah bruh. I can be pissed off if I want to. Didn't say it's your fault. Pretty dumb thing to say. You didn't even answer most of my questions anyway. With your mindset, wars and injustice and prejudice etc will prosper. United we stand, divided we fall. We all share problems. We are on this vessel that we call earth together. All our problems, experiences etc have a ripple effect. No matter how minor something may seem it has a ripple effect. Hugs and kisses ma homie.
  2. Read my posts. I wrote that in the future the drive may need to be re assigned for a different task. Has already happened with my drives currently. SMR is inferior. There is no point in buying it other then to save money. If for example there is a power outage. you lose more data with an SMR drive then you would a PMR. PMR and SMR are two different methods of writing and reading from drives. SMR is a riskier and slower way to do it. Slower write times.
  3. And NO I want to be sure they don't have SMR NOT PMR. I WANT PMR.
  4. Spent weeks googling all this all day. That PMR info is not available online, or at least from my searches. WD are assholes and refuse to give that info to anyone. I'm not alone. Many people talking about it on forums. How does anyone upload TB's to cloud? It's normal for upload speeds from ISP's to be only 1mbps. So HOW?! No iSP's allow you to increase or choose a package with a fast upload. They don't even have that option at all. I live in the UK BTW.
  5. Don't have any of those. Can't get a safety deposit box. Don't live in the states. Nearest bank that does it is 100 miles away.
  6. Impossible as I said. I have no other second building. Who the hell owns multiple buildings in multiple locations? That's not how it is for the majority of the population.
  7. .... Read my entire post again. My original post. The first post. The long ass post. Read. It. Properly.
  8. You clearly didn't read all I typed properly. I CANNOT upload to cloud. Please re-read. And in general your answers are lacking and show you didn't read all I typed.
  9. What's your channel? And reply to everything else It typed please.
  10. I don't need to share my data with anyone. Aka I don't have a business. I just need to store lots of video recordings (starting a YouTube channel). I DO need to archive, but it is possible in the future I may decide I don't want those videos anymore and so the hard drive needs repurposing. For this reason it makes no sense IMO to buy a SMR hard drive. From what I have read and understood, SMR hard drives are inferior and aren't worth buying. The hard drive market is complex now. Used to be straightforward. 1) What I don't get is wtf is the point of external RAID drive enclosures and why do they cost so much? 2) How is a RAID enclosure different from an external drive enclosure? I am looking at getting the 20TB WD My Book Duo but not sure I should. I don't think RAID is worth the money for me. I think I need a backup more than RAID. I have no backup right now. 3) Do you think RAID is worth it and if so why? Surely offsite backup > redundancy? Now I know backups must be offsite but I have no place offsite to store hard drives. Uploading to something like backblaze is also impossible for me. I have 7TB of videos and only a 0.7mbps upload speed on my internet connection. 3) What can I do for backing up? 4) I notice the Duo can be used as 'two independent drives' it says on WD's website.. but then it says '(JBOD)'. WTF is that shit about. It's either it can be used as two switchable independent drives, or it's bunched together in a fake raid shit called JBOD which makes the drive appear as a single drive with the full 20TB showing up? Th wording on their website makes it confusing as shit. WTF. I want ideally a single huge volume (that's what it's called right, not drive?) such as 20-40TB. Ideally. But not as a JBOD which risks losing all your data should one drive fail. Ideally I want the drives to be external. 5) Another thing I was thinking about is surely it would be safer to have them as individual drives, that way if there was a surge and it killed a drive, the backup drive (if I was storing my backups locally in the same room), would be there to take it's place? I guess the disadvantage of a 'manual' raid is that you have to do just that... manually backup and delete which can be impossible once projects become larger due to the limitations of human memory. idk wtf to do. It's so freaking confusing. I don't know shit about networking and atm don't need my drives to be accessible by anyone else, which is what I thought the point of NAS is. 6) Why the f do external drives only go up to 4TB? Look at WD portable drives for eg. Yes you can get the Seagate backup plus 8TB but it's slow as F from my research as it uses SMR. Pile of utter crap. And those additional front USB ports look like it's begging to be damaged through those additional ports in some way. WD told me 'For the WD extarnal MY passport drives, we are sorry to inform you that We can only guarantee drive capacity. We cannot guarantee a particular internal hard drive model, data interface, rotational speed, or cache size in the external hard drive enclosure.' Because they are total fucktards. The lady even told me over the phone the duo drives are PMR, then she was like wait..... and made me wait and kept confusing me with her messed up answers going back and forth between telling me some it is PMR then 'wait' it's not PMR... wait IT IS PMR etc etc. It became even more confusing because I asked about other drives too and she wasn't giving me answers in a logical fashion, instead she was all over the place. Then later she sent me an email, and part of it was the above about 'WD extarnal MY passport' - asshole can't even spell correctly' but another part was this: As following to our conversation, information on which of our drives use PMR vs SMR is not something that we typically provide to our customers. What I can tell you as an FYI most products shipping today are Conventional Recording (PMR). We just recently began shipping SMR(Shingled Magnetic Recording) basically at the start of this year (2017). Total fucktard. So I replied with: ''You told me over the phone that my book duo are pmr drives. Why are you now refusing to tell me? Why would you refuse to give anyone information on pmr or smr? I need to know for sure the information I asked you over the phone.'' Oh yeah and we aren't in 2017. It's 2018. WTF is wrong with this woman. So wtf should I do? I don't wanna use internal drives internally, because my living situation may change and I may have to sell my huge PC (Coolermaster CM Storm is a large case). It's also major effort for rewiring the PC to accommodate more drives, and I would have to change the remaining drive bay to face sideways so I would get no airflow going into the case. I could keep it facing inward but then the wires would be visible and it would be a eyesore. The 7TB I have now is as follows: Samsung Spinpoint 1TB x2 (2010 and 2011 models bought new at the time) Samsung Spinpoint 2TB x2 ((2011 models bought new at the time) - mostly kept off (I have a Lian Li HDD individual power switch thingymobob: ). Random old 500GB Hitachi 2006 Random old 250GB Toshiba pulled out from my bros old 2009 Macbook Random old 250GB Western Digital 2007 that I think came out of a cousins old 2nd hand (he bought it used I think) old laptop. It makes clicking noises but not constant. One every about.... few minutes or so. No clicking when the drive is in use. What this means is one bay is fully used by my OS SSD (not included above as it's only for my OS and is only 128GB), and the other 3 slots in the bay are used up by the Samsung drives. 8) Why does the WD Book Pro cost SO MUCH more than the Duo? WTF. It's just hard drives in an enclosure with a circuit board..... wtf.
  11. Metro Bank is one of the only banks to provide these deposit boxes, which it says customers made clear they wanted. There are five different sizes available, which range from £120 to £480 a year, and each box has two keys – one for the customer and one for the bank. More than twice as expensive here in the uk. And only a few banks still offer them. None are anywhere near me. I get 0.7Mbps UPLOAD speed. Don't think backing up online even with 'unlimited' storage on offer will work. Results: Speed: 0.7 mbps Size: 7 TB 25631 Hours, 51 Minutes and 28 Seconds That's 1067.9583 DAYS THATS 3 YEARS OF 24/7 UPLOADING!!!!! Wonder what Casey does for backing up considering he has SO MUCH data. 100's of Terabytes. Do you think I SHOULDN'T use RAID? What should I do for offsite backup as I don't have a place I can store them offsite?
  12. I know exfat. It has a max file size limitation that you can transfer of 4GB. Useless. Think man before you reply. Yes but I have no friends or any other place to put them. I know what offsite backing up is. But what is a safe deposit box? Quick Google search shows me you have to pay for it. Don't have the money for such long term contracts. No I said more than that. Please read all my messages again carefully. That drive is £30 more than the USA Seagate you linked me to. Your answers are all lacking.
  13. Will other people please provide input. Thank you So would I just transfer all clips onto the ssd, edit and export to the ssd, upload and then save the edited version to another drive and delete everything (transferred clips + export) from the ssd? Sounds long. Not really. Just not £1,500 for 20TB. I notice Casey Neistat uses these 20TB £1,500 drives, but he has a lot of money. Why do you think Casey uses redundancy (he never mentions backups, but he does say he uses redundancy) considering they are only archived drives and not in daily use? And why those Thunderbolt drives? Surely he doesn't need such speed considering they are archived drives? I have both a Windows and a Mac. Will decide to stick with one or the other at some point. Trying to use drives between the OS's is a pain the butt. even though I have NTFS software (scared of corrupted data etc as it is apparently not that reliable to use a NTFS drive on a mac with NTFS software). I live in the UK. Those drives aren't available here. I'm also not sure how safe/reliable (might be a fake product for example), ordering PC parts on Amazon is. I have always bought my parts from reputable online stores. Why do people like i-justine buy the G drives that cost so much more? (Look at the top of the pile of drives) : Searching for 8TB external drive here in the UK on Google shows an expensive selection of drives compared to what you linked.... and yes the drive appears to be available, but on a site called newegg which I think is an American only site, and the same drive is more expensive than the one there on the USA Amazon link you gave me. The case on that looks drive is cheap and likely to break if travelling, but I suppose it's fine for archiving: https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/253752721039?chn=ps - See, cheap tacky case. Please explain where I would store the drives 'offsite'? In a bush outside?!! What do you mean store swap them out for backups? Again I appreciate the replies but you aren't being very helpful. Do you mean a SSD 500GB or 1TB? You miss many things I ask such as cloud storage. Re-read all my messages and reply point by point please, with in depth replies.
  14. ... I have filled up about 7TB of drives with mainly videos I told you. I do need lots of space already. I havent edited a single one nor uploaded due to my complex situation. My parents abuse me. It's complicated, so I can't upload and usually lay in bed all day year after year vlogging each day on my phone, rarely going out. Thus over 3 years I have accumulated many videos. Which are really crappy quality, especially as the are mostly indoors under artificial downlights, yet they consume a ton of space. The Galaxy S7 is awful for vlogging but if I use my G7X it has severe battery and heating issues which limits length of filming time etc etc. You're not being very helpful at all. What do you mean SSD for editing? How would a SSD help in editing?
  15. Appreciate the reply but doesn't answer anything really. Thunderbolt is a connection type. You need to explain much more than just 'cus it's thunderbolt'. Assume you are talking to a dumbo. WD Duo IS red. Written on the site. BUT it doesn't specify WHICH. There are PRO versions too and for all I know, these could be custom designed ones just for the duo which could be worse. I didn't list any Seagate external drive. I am starting a YouTube channel. So mainly videos. Already used up 7TB of drives. Need more and currently have no backup nor redundancy. Any ideas for backup? Ideally offsite obviously (live at home). Cloud storage likely won't offer enough space and how safe is it if it's on a server on the internet?! Googling 'Google Cloud Storage' brings up links for business stuff that makes no sense to me. Drives are a bit of a mess. As follows: Samsung Spinpoint 1TB x2 (2010 and 2011 models bought new at the time) Samsung Spinpoint 2TB x2 ((2011 models bought new at the time) - mostly kept off (I have a Lian Li HDD individual power switch thingymobob). 20 seconds or so. No clicking when the drive is in use. Decided to try putting it into the 2.5 inch front dock my CM Storm case has today and for some reason the SATA port or cable isn't working. When i tried sliding it in there it doesn't and didn't go in smoothly. I haven't used that dock ever. Tried it for the 1st time today. It's poorly designed. The drive went in slanted and I was still pushing with some force and eventually it went. Hard to explain. I notice there is a dent on the top of the drive, but it could have been there before. Hot swap is ON. Either way after pulling it out from the front 2.5inch quick dock and putting it into a external hdd caddy that I have laying on my table opened up to allow for quick HDD swaps, Windows told me it needs to run check disk. Tried letting it run multiple times and cancelling because I kept changing my mind. Tried leaving it for about an hour and it had barely made any progress. Well what I discovered is most of the videos DON'T WORK on that drive. The ones in folders do. But the ones that are on the drive NOT in folders don't. WTF. So now I have the drive sitting on the desk. Need to clear some space on one of the 2TB drives to attempt to salvage via transfer what I can from this WD 250GB. REALLY want the videos though. Had some really good videos on there. Hard drive recovery center with a clean room would probably cost £1,000. Used that drive and the 500GB and other 250GB out of desperation as I vlog on my phone which only has a 128GB microSD which gets full after about a month or some weeks of vlogging each day for around 20-40 minutes, so my phone kept getting full. No idea how reliable the drives are considering their ages and sources. Will be moving onto higher quality cameras so much larger file sizes, so more space will be needed. Don't want to delete any original footage, nor edited videos. Thanks for your reply.
  16. Why do drives like this (https://www.lacie.com/gb/en/products/big/5big-thunderbolt-2/) (choose option 20TB) cost £1,500? I could get 4 of these for £1020: https://www.ebuyer.com/791740-seagate-barracuda-pro-8tb-desktop-hard-drive-3-5-sata-iii-6gb-s-7200rpm-st8000dm0004 and I would have 12TB more space. Or I could get this for £560 (choose 20TB): https://www.wdc.com/en-gb/products/external-storage/my-book-duo.html#WDBFBE0200JBK-EESN I think the above uses 5400rpm drives (correct me if I'm wrong). OR I could get 2 of these: https://www.ebuyer.com/791852-wd-red-nas-10-tb-internal-hdd-3-5-wd100efax-wd100efax?mkwid=s_dc&pcrid=51482414339&pkw=&pmt=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0If3nO6n3QIVz7ztCh2IUgq9EAQYASABEgJjDfD_BwE for £600 which is the same price as the duo external drive. WHY?! Why is it in this case cheaper to get the external drive? Or for slightly cheaper I could get 2 of these: https://www.ebuyer.com/752932-seagate-ironwolf-10tb-3-5-nas-hard-drive-st10000vn0004 How does the lacie do 1000mbps+? What's the exact model of drive in the wd duo? I won't have my PC on 24/7. I also ideally want external drives as I'm not sure if I will stay with my PC or go laptop only (living situation may force change). My current PC is huge. I built it using a Coolermaster CM storm so it's too big should my living situation change. Thank you PS: Just checked the cost of some hard drives I bought back in 2011 (I store all invoices) to see how prices have changed. A 2TB Samsung F4 Spinpoint 5400rpm was £57 including VAT back in 2011. PRICES ARE STILL THE SAME 7 YEARS LATER: https://www.ebuyer.com/store/Storage/cat/Hard-Drive---Internal/2TB WHYYYY?
  17. ATM not sure if I will keep the PC or use a laptop only (Would still often be using the monitor hooked up via HDMI to the laptop). So upgrading the PC is a no go for now and I am done with building a PC myself. Always multiple things that don't work properly like my Bitfenix fan controller which randomly and often decides to set my fans all to max and changes from Manual mode to Auto when it does. Or Gigabyte's software that controls my CPU Zalman's heatsink's fan which often just shuts itself down without me noticing until the fan noise bugs me (the fan increases in speed once the software turns off). Or USB issues and so on and so forth. Custom building is a pain in the butt to do because making it neat isn't easy and requires many tools which have to be bought and for all the issues that come with it. Internal wires are too long or too short which makes neat building impossible. I HATE building a PC.
  18. I have a Samsung P2450H 24-inch. I built my PC in 2012. So parts are all 6 years old now. It still plays modern games, just not at max settings. I'm thinking of either getting a new display for my PC or buying a PS4 Pro and a 60 inch UHD Samsung TV (QLED is wayyyy too expensive). Combined those two would cost around £1,200 not including games and possibly an additional controller. OR I could buy the 60 inch and keep it in my bedroom attached to the PC and use the old PS3 controller to play games. But not comfortable. No couch in my bedroom. In the living room there is a 45.5 inch Samsung TV from around 2010. It's heavy and looks pretty rubbish compared to the TV my parents have in their room which is a new (2 or 3 years old now) Samsung Smart LED TV. Are new computer displays significantly better than what I have right now? What displays would you recommend? Should I go bigger than 24 inches (I would like to but I am afraid my PC won't be able to handle gaming at higher resolutions). What do you think I should do and why?
  19. Thank you for your reply but you haven't really answered my questions. Anyone else who replies please answer all of my questions one by one. Thank you.
  20. Please note my questions are numbered. Please try to answer all of them in your reply. Thank you. My audio setup is as follows: Asus Xonar D2X -> 3 x 3.5mm cables, male on both ends -> One side of the cables go into the Xonar D2X the other into the Logitech 5.1 Z5500 So for years I have had it so that it works using the 3.5mm analogue cables. I discovered today that my soundcard has SPDIF. Until today I didn't know what it was. I assumed that the Xonar D2X didn't have optical digital out and never knew what SPDIF was and thought only RCA style cables go into it (I still don't know if any other cable other then a SPDIF adapter (supplied with the sound card) can go into it. A quick check on guru3d's 2008 review on the card shows: '' S/PDIF input and output, both with optical and coaxial connections' So there is something called coaxial. 1) What is this coaxial and does it work using light, like optical digital TOSLINK? I tried connecting my PC to my Z5500 using the adapter. The cable supplied looks like a toy. it is plastic. I was like What the..., this must be a joke. It worked. 2) I wonder if the quality of this cable affects the sound? I assume as it's digital it makes no difference? I switched between Analogue and Digital using both the Z5500 and the Xonar D2X Control Centre. The control centre has only these options for the SPDIF out: > PCM > Dolby Digital Live > DTS Interactive > S/PDIF In Loopback 3) What are all these options and why and when do I use each one? 4) When I put it on PCM I get no sound and my Z5500 shows 'No digital data'. Why? After trying it out I noticed that Optical sounds a tiny bit worse and is quieter. I have read that by using digital you bypass all the good high quality audio processing of the sound card and pass that job onto the receiver (in this case the Z5500 speakers). So it is said that analogue output is better quality. 5) Is that true and if so can you please explain how? I am renovating my room soon, so it would be nice to be able to get rid of the 3 cables and use this short digital cable instead. Sound quality takes priority thought of course, so if digital output is worse please tell me.
