Agreed @TempestCatto. Looks like clearcut strips in a logging operation?

Edit: On a second look, it might be an orchard. If that was California, I would say avacado grove.

    Definitely old logging tracks.

Orchards run more linear tracks as they have machines run up and down constantly.

    Asus quality in a nutshell:

Can't stand that company & I agree that I will never buy anything from them again.

Toshiba statistically has the most reliable HDDs. I listed WD because there was a point in time when, for about 5 years, one single WD Green HDD was my only point of storage for about 1.2 TB of personal pics and vids that I took on my phones over the years, and loads of personal documents all the way back to when I was a kid. It got thrown around, dropped, brought across the US and back, and it still held up until I finally got my data storage/redundancy act together. Had it failed, I would've lost a lifetime of data.

My fleet of HDDs is now Toshiba, but I agree, they're loud.

I can vouch for Monoprice reliability as well. I use their cables for analog audio.

I only listed Bose because their stuff has been incredibly reliable for me. I use Beyerdynamic DT1990s + AudioQuest Dragonfly Red DAC/amp for music. I can't say much about their longevity/reliability yet though.

40 actually. It's one of the best cars in the world IMO, but not nearly one of the most expensive.

Nope, I made this thread expecting most people would have better cars than me. My car is a soccer mom car. I think it's really nice and I love it, but it's not like it's a luxury car or anything.

I have no interest in shitting on peoples' cars and I can absolutely respect a car of any price. My first car was quite cheap, and I was damn proud of it, and thrilled just to have a car.

So no I'm not shitting on anyone's car here, I'm shitting on their poor decisions. I expected a smarter crowd of people, especially here on the LTT forums which is generally full of intelligent folks. There's definitely some of that here in this thread, some well thought out rides. Not much of it though. I was surprised and disappointed to see how much of this community is just your run-of-the-mill "ricer kids". The crazy thing is, most of them are probably not even younger than me.

If your budget for a car is 3-5k, that's cool. Mine was too at one point. But if you spend that 3-5k trying to get yourself a race car, yep, I think you're a dumbass and so do 99% of the people who see you on the road. On top of that, zero roads in the US or Canada allow you to legally drive at speeds that are "fun" pretty much anywhere. If that's your budget for a car, I can't imagine what your budget for speeding tickets is.

@B16CXHatch explained himself and it seems this wasn't the case for him, and if I understand correctly, he's keeping it for sentimental value and mods it for fun 13 year after he bought it.

If I saw a 1996 Civic CX hatchback in its original state, I'd say it was a damn good choice for a car. I called his car shitty because I wrongly assumed ^^^^

In theory, yes every modern car SHOULD reach 200k miles...but I've seen plenty of civics, corollas with 200k miles that are in better mechanical shape than chevys, fords, kias with 100k

My daily is a 2015 Honda CB500F. Bough it right as the newer and updated body style was being sold and they wanted it cleared out of their back storage area, so got a good deal. Fast enough, quite fun, gets 57mpg in mixed driving and 70mpg on the highway on regular grade fuel. It's under 600cc so insurance is pretty inexpensive.

    -6 speed manual

    Or

My 2005 Scion (Toyota) hatchback that I bought new, and probably will drive the wheels off of since it's not worth anything. Gets 40mpg and requires almost nothing outside of routine maintenance, which I do on both my vehicles myself. This has basically been relegated to an inclement-weather vehicle, and if I want to go somewhere that I need more cargo space.

@B16CXHatch I honestly never understood why anyone would buy a shitty older car, and then spend 5x what they spent on the car to modify it.

Why wouldn't you just buy a nicer car, not modify it, and have a more pleasant driving experience?

Maybe I'm missing something, but a lot of the posts in this thread are quite confusing to me. What's the mental process that brings about such an order of priorities?
  11. Funny
BecauseICanTBH got a reaction from kirashi in What do you drive?
Fun, sure, assuming the expensive car is actually aimed at performance. I'd say buying an expensive performance-oriented car is just as stupid as paying a bunch to modify a cheaper one.

Of course, if it's extra money you have laying around, then I suppose having a few toys is a "to each his own" thing.

But if it's your only/primary car, I don't see why anyone would prioritize "fun to drive" over "comfortable and pleasant to drive". I mean, how discontent can one be?

I build my PCs because I usually want a very specific config that nobody reputable sells pre-built - not because it's fun (it's a total hassle IMO). Perhaps I'm an anomaly though.

Your comment does shed some light on this for me.

Noice, one of my ex's parents own a used car lot, so I got to drive their family Toyota Rav4 multiple times whenever they were picking up newly acquired cars from the barge. We'd all drive down, then I'd drive the family Rav 4 back while the other 4 family members drove the new-used cars back to the lot.

I currently drive a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek XV Sport after lots of careful hunting through local for sale by owner listings. These things are hard to come by at a good price in the used market because many people don't like to part with them, and they hold their value like Apple products do. Since acquiring mine about 2 years ago I've enjoyed every minute driving it, including taking it on logging roads, doing some light offroading, throwing the kayaks on the Thule roof racks, and learning how it performs in limp mode. (For anyone wondering, check engine code P000[A/B/C/D] means it's time to play "swap the Oil Control Valves to determine which one(s) need to be replaced" game.)

While I'd love to rush out and buy a WRX version of the Crosstrek, I don't have the disposable income nor has Subaru released such a model, so I'll just continue being happy with what I have. Plus, I've already wired in a front + rear dashcam (around the side curtain airbags, no doubt) and custom-cut & installed my own mudflaps, so I'm kinda attached to the car for the moment. And yes, the first owner was all flustered over the cat pawprints on the hood, offering to pay to have them professionally removed if it made the sale, but I told her they added character and I like cats anyway, so on they stayed.

Some people really enjoy modifying older (or newer) cars as a hobby, or simply because it may be cheaper to buy an older used car and modify it to suit their needs. For example, it's actually cheaper to take an older non-Sport version of vehicles with certain engines, then tune the engines & swap out a few minor parts to achieve the same HP or driveability that you'd otherwise pay a lot more for in a new or higher model car. To these people, buying a cheaper or older car may have been the only thing they could find or afford at the time, or simply a choice they actively made because they love getting their hands onto things to learn how they work.

While I'm not into cars to the point of doing an engine swap, I certainly see the value in performing my own maintenance & minor repairs because it teaches me hands-on lifeskills I'd otherwise have to pay a mechanic a lot of money to perform for me. To be clear, there's nothing wrong with buying a newer more expensive car with the features you want right out of the gate, nor is there anything wrong with paying someone else to maintain your car if it's within your means, but know that there are a ton of different people out there, some of whom really like getting into the mechanics of things.

I've had the old car for 13 years. Saving up to buy something nicer was extremely difficult back then. Now I'm in a better place, and it's a project car. I spend money on it now because I want to. It's fun to tinker with it. And more pleasant driving experience is subjective. My mom's 2014 Subaru Forrester is a "nicer" car but boring as hell to drive. My Civic is light and powerful (for it's weight). It's an absolute hoot to drive, even slow.

Just stop and think about the forum your on. Why build PCs? Why not just buy a pre-built? It's simpler and can provide a subjectively better experience. Why tinker with old computers and electronics? Why play older video games? Because it's fun. You basically asked, why do I have a hobby and spend money on it. There is no logic. I enjoy it.

Also, don't call people's cars shitty. That's kind of a dick move bro.

Bought a 2 year old Volkswagen High Up! to drive to work everyday.

    I don't need a larger/faster car since I'm traveling alone anyways.

Just wish Volkswagen would have put a small turbo in it to boost performance (advertised as 60HP but more like 20/25HP at normal RPMs) and to improve the fuel economy on the highway.
The fuel usage goes up quite dramatically over 90 kph which means I tend to stick behind lorries, which is quite relaxing actually.

Last car was a Nissan Sentra I bought in 2012 and about 3 weeks ago I bought the last 2019 Nissan Sentra on the lot which had all the options I was looking for
I originally has a Pontiac which eventually bit the dust due to an electrical problem which I traded in for the Nissan.

When we get a big snow me and the kids drive around and will spend hours pulling stuck cars out of the snow. a few years ago on the way to work I helped a stuck state trooper out of the snow. He asked if there was anything he could do for me and as a joke i said "well my wife has these driving tickets that are gonna cost me an arm and a leg to pay off" and he legit took care of them. saved me $450 lol.

Otherwise, it has all the awesome features like adaptive cruise, Mark Levinson surround, an outdated navi lol, heated and air conditioned seats both front and rear, messaging and reclining rear seats, air ride, smart entry and start, soft close doors, double pane glass, power adjustable headrests and seatbelts, power rear sunshade, and a bunch of other cool stuff.
