I think this is to force providers to upgrade their network, especially in area's where they only give dial-up internet

At MAX 300$ even something like a minisforum UN100L
    https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-un100l-1
Which cost 180$ is a much billion times of a better deal than that E-waste PC.

{I have the UN100C, which is near identical in specs} and it is quite decent for windows/basic office usage/light gaming.
Though with a TDP of at most 15W under normal use, and max 9W when underclocked, its perfect for a home-assistant server.

Please note for some strange reason the UN100C is discontinued. not sure what the reason is.
Especially with it being smaller and taking up less space than the Un100L. it would be a better bang for the buck system.

Not forgetting they often want you to buy at least 1000+ pieces, and get a expensive service contract as well.
essentially locking out the end-user from ever getting these drives NEW.

Most of these cardridges are also made to be written once or twice, then put in a climate controlled storage room, only accessed when you need the data. which then it is faster to copy everything than to look for that 1 specific 1GB image you created XXX years ago.

One benefit with smart-plugs when using it with 3D printers, is that when you put a Camera on the printer you can remote shut-down the printer in case it goes wrong, and it starts printing in the air/creating a GLOPTOP.

    My thoughts
This is nothing but a scummy move from a company that doesn't like local integrations for devices, and wants users to pay a large monthly fee, to use their devices they legally bought and own.
They want FULL control, and want to milk as much data from their consumers as they can. not forgetting that if you offend them in any way they can remote shut down your devices you legally own

There is a reason why open standards like Matter, threads or Zigbee should exist, and  manufacturers are forced to use them. its to prevent hundreds of walled garden apps for each smarthome device.

Like with homeassistant you have 1 app for all your devices, not 100 because the manufacturer couldn't be bothered to combine it into one app. and that it does not force a always online DRM cloud subscription to use your device trough your smartphone.
