    AMD's live event has started!

    Watch it live here:

    Or if you want to follow it in a written format, check out this thread or Anandtech's live blog.

    What to expect:
    New graphics cards based on RDNA2. AMD has already teased some performance numbers, we have had some unconfirmed leaks and we have some details about RDNA2 from the console events.
    My prediction is also that AMD will play to the cheap seats and make jabs at Nvidia's supply and demand struggles, but that remains to be seen.
    We already know that the RX6000 series will support AV1 decoding in hardware, just like Nvidia's 30 series GPUs.

    KeltonDSMer got a reaction from WkdPaul in So what have you bought so far?
    I went to Microcenter and got a new graphics card and monitor. New MSI rx480 4GB for $190 with Civ6 game code included and a Samsung U28E590D 3840x2160 60Hz 28" (40-60Hz Freesync range) for $250 (they price-matched Bestbuy for me on the monitor).

    The rx480 was cheaper than their rx470's and 1060's after MIR and came with a game I would happily pay $30 for, I thought that was a pretty solid deal!

    The monitor was like $700-800 at launch a couple years ago, and that was before they revised it to conform to DP 1.2A spec with freesync. $250 also seemed like a really good deal for that too! It even came with a DP and HDMI 2.0 cable which I thought was really nice.

    As stupid as product numbers are for monitors, I am surprised that Samsung didn't add a letter or something to the product name, freesync (even just 40-60 range) is a pretty big deal IMO and is a huge value adder.

    yeah all miata's are convertibles. If you see one with a solid top it's either custom or one of the OEM/aftermarket hard-top attachments. The car is designed to be a convertible and only weighs 2200-2400 lbs depending on the model

    really i only like lifted trucks when they actually have some decent ground clearance. and i wouldn't take a heavy duty diesel truck offroading, something a bit lighter duty, like a tacoma or even a 4runner (not a truck, but still based off a truck), with a decent 3 inch lift and some 33 inch toyo open country tires. but i agree, trucks that are lifted like crazy, but can't even travel over a boulder are flat out pointless. it's like they're trying to show off their nonexistent balls by lifting their heavy duty trucks to hell and back.

    Nice, good call. Of all the little vacuum hoses to no worry about, that's a crucial one you don't want to leak. Since the FPR raises/lowers fuel pressure to keep the differential pressure equal between it and the manifold pressure constant, even a small leak could cause the fuel pressure to drop enough under boost to lean out your mixture.

    What engine/car is that BTW?

    I'd bring up the fact the internal combustion engines don't have to run on fossil fuels; Brazil for example has had a huge ethanol push since the 80's. IIRC they grow "switchgrass" which takes less water and affects the soil much less than the bullshit corn we grow to be converted. Instead of the US subsidizing farmers to grow corn, I wish we changed it over to something like that and/or soy (or another oily crop) for diesel. Instead we grow corn, turn it into corn syrup, and make shitty food out of it which in turn increases healthcare costs because of people eating/drinking way too much sugar all day. I'm sure I'm a bit off on some stuff but there is a long wiki if you want to read it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol_fuel_in_Brazil

    High performance electric motors and many green energy products on the other hand, do entirely rely on mined materials...elements that are not present in very many places in the world. Neodymium-dysprosium magnets are an obvious one. We (USA)used to mine a significant ratio of the worlds production of these materials, then China undercut everybody and strangled the market shutting down our production and now holds over 90% of the world's exports. Does anyone think China has mining and ore-separation regulations that make this an "environmentally safe" practice? I don't. When someone gives me a shitty look while driving their EV, I always wonder how much diesel was burned to mine the ore, how much coal was burned to produce the energy needed to separate these materials, and how much water was poisoned to do the same. It's not like their 500-1000lb nickle/cadmium/lithium batteries grown on trees either. Again, I might be off on some stuff but there is a wiki if you want to read a little more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rare_earth_element

    This mining data isn't really available (China doesn't release it), but to think driving around an EV is saving the world isn't looking at the entire process from the beginning.

    I'm all for sustainable practices and such, but it bothers me when the people give so much shit towards the early stages of oil production and don't do the same for "green" technologies either.

    Now I am not going to lie, I heard the issue with .NET 3.5 not installing since Windows 8, and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 under Windows 7.

    Now I never experienced this problem, nor on any system I fixed. If you said you never used a system teak tool that modifies system files, or use some crappy registry cleaner, then I am wondering if some software that .NET 3.5 does some crap in trying to install itself, fails, and asks you to install it manually. But by that time, your system screwed up.

    And I am guessing this, because on my side, after installing Windows, and drivers and update the OS fully, this is what I do right after. I install .NET 3.5 before installing any software, as I know that I have a few odd software that needs it.

    That is because you have Fast Boot enabled in your UEFI. They are a variety of ways to go into your UEFI:
    Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced Startup (Once you click on "Restart now" button under that section, you can go under Troubleshoot > Advanced, and you have the option to go to your UEFI). Start > Power button > Press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard, and select "Restart".. hold Shift key until a menu will show. On that menu, like above, go under Troubleshooting > Advanced, and you have the option to go to your UEFI. You can do the same on the Ctrl+Alt+Delete screen Power button. Boot from a Windows setup disk or USB, and go under Repair Windows, and you'll have the option inside to get there. (good in the case you really can't boot Windows) Many motherboards have a dedicated button to go your to  your UEFI somewhere And you have the motherboard manufacture that makes a software.

    Look into BSEL mod. I used two slivers of electrical tape to gain 25% clockspeed on a q6600/locked Dell MOBO by tricking it into running a higher FSB. It automatically dropped the RAM divider and the stock voltage was enough for the OC.

    MOD:
    Stock R15
    OC R15

    I am not sure what combination multi/FSB your chip runs, but if the stock FSB isn't too high there are probably a couple pins you can block off to bump it up!

    Quick history of why I have this case and why I decided to put modern HW in it. My father had a long term project in Sydney when I was in 4th Grade ~1999. The family decided to move there for the better part of that year. A coworker of his stayed at our house while we were away, they gave us this PC as a "thank you" when we got back.

    I used this slot1 pentium II equipped workhorse throughout middle/high school. I never have had the heart to trash the parts since it was the first computer I got to keep in my room.

    I honestly didn't know DIY PCs were a thing until 2013, despite having used one for years. It makes me sad, the PC I bought from Dell in '06 for College was such a ripoff...I paid over $1000 for a Pentium D and a base NV GC. I was part of the consumer base that purchased based on MHz numbers and didn't know AMD even existed during their heyday . Had I even been presented with the option for a different CPU architecture, I would have likely learned about the differences and been 10 years ahead of where I am now in my PC DIY experience. I'll always be a bit bitter towards Intel for bribing OEMs and fucking over the whole industry, and screw you Dell for taking the cheap CPUs in trade for not offering AMD chips!

    Anyway, this build is all about stuffing no thrills, bang for the buck HW into an old shitty tank of a case. I've never been to a LAN event, but my thought was to put something together for a LAN party that would have people thinking "wtf is that?".

    Parts (all new from MC):
    -i3 6100 ->$109
    -Asrock Z170m Pro4s ->$45 after MIR/$30 bundle discount at MC
    -bx200 240GB  ->$55
    -crucial ddr4 c16 2400 2x8GB ->$43 (holy shit that was cheap)
    -EVGA B600 -> $37 after MIR (was the cheapest 80+ bronze they had, cheaper than cx450) (I really should have purchased a modular PSU for this, but $$$$$$)
    -R9 270 as a placeholder until I can compare AIB rx480s to AIB 1060s

    There were no surprises putting this together, I just went for it and didn't even test the HW out of the case.

    They don't make 'em like they used to....28lbs lol

    The black 5.25" cover is just there temporarily. The 2nd beige CD drive is too long and interferes with the RAM, so I'll find a beige cover to replace the black. I wanted the two drives because that's what you did 10-15 years ago...read from one while writing to the other!

    I took the time to hook up all the front panel switches and lights, it feels AMAZING pressing that old beast of a switch and seeing all the old school lights start blinking away

    I'm not about to spend $$$ on a cooler for $100 chip, so I OCed it as far as it would go on the stock cooler at a voltage I tested to be safe temperature-wise. Once the BCLK is adjusted, the temps sensors are disabled. To make sure my temps are safe, I kept increasing voltage at stock clocks until I saw mid-70's running R15. This was at about 1.2V. Since temp scales with voltage much more than clockspeed, I figured this is a pretty safe way of finding the thermal limits without being able to see core temps while overclocked.

    Oh, and the bios that was shipped with the board did not allow me to OC without it killing the multiplier. I needed to flash a beta bios off of Asrock's site before I could OC.

    Results are pretty solid in R15, 14% increased performance for a 13% clockspeed increase! I think the CPU has a lame MemController because I had to keep dropping the divider as clocks went up. I know the DIMMS can handle it because I tested up to 2800MHZ @1.25V at stock CPU clocks.

    176CB single thread, that's about what haswell does at 4.7Ghz! 452 multi thread is not too shabby either.

    stock

    OC

    Thanks for checking it out! I'll update with a new picture once I find that beige colored 5.25" bay cover and new graphics card.
