  1. Well, the new consoles are still relatively new and Unreal Engine 5 hasn't even come out yet. With the pandemic complicating everything, we'll still have to wait another 1-2 years for truly next gen games made for PS5/new Xbox to see the light of day. Not that I expect anything revolutionary on those consoles. Graphics are going to get better and that's it. Steam Deck is obviously a product that's going to have its fans and will be at least moderately successful. Being a handheld it's clearly not intended for everyone, but it's obvious why someone who loves handhelds like Linus would be stoked about it. I myself am very happy because of what Valve is doing for Linux gaming. Would be nice to be able to completely leave Windows behind.
  2. While I'm absolutely in love with the Steam Deck hardware (even though I don't need it and will likely therefore never buy it), the one thing I'm really interested in is the new SteamOS. I can't wait to test that thing out on an actual PC once the ISO becomes available.
  3. To me, that seems like something you could accidentally hit with your hand or elbow, especially during a frantic multiplaermatch. Also, any spilled coffee or tea or w/e could easily spill right off the edge and onto the USB devices you got in that little hub. Also, if you have little kids, it's not a good idea to keep these small, swallow-able USB devices within their reach. The great thing about front IO on computer cases is that it keeps the USB evices easily accessible, but also safe and out of the way.
  4. You can't achieve 100% privacy, and if you could, you wouldn't want to because that would effectively brick whatever device you use to access the internet.
  5. If you can, wait. The current market is no good for GPU drivers. While intel integrated graphics aren't ideal, you can still use streaming services like Nvidia Geforce Now, Playstation Now, and Google Stadia to have a great singleplayer experience. Just about the only games that you can't really play on these platforms are the ones where split second decisions are everything (eg., CSGO, Doom Eternal, etc.).
  6. Front IO every day all the way. There's nothing worse than trying to blindly stick a device in the back IO and/or having to get up from your chair to do so.
  7. INB4 Destiny 3 is a 3rd person, story driven, single player game with tons of quicktime events and slowly walking around while characters run their mouths. Anyhow I don't mind this. More competition is good and it seems both Sony and Microsoft are going to do their best to be as competitive as possible in this console generation.
  8. I haven't read the entire thread, but from what I understood, pop-ups are a problem for you? If so, why not use adblock? Also, if viruses and performance are a concern, you really can't go wrong by installing Linux Mint Mate (or Xfce) or ZorinOS Lite. You'll have the same web browsing functionalities you have on Windows, while also being immune to 99% of malware and viruses out there.
  9. The good lore ended with the end of the Frozen Throne expansion for WarCraft 3. Everything after that was either complete trash that ruined the old stuff, or just plain forgettable. As for whether we're going to have an official end to the WarCraft lore, we won't. It's a huge IP so even if Activision Blizz somehow goes under and completely disappears as a company (not gonna happen in the next 20-30 years), someone will buy the WarCraft IP and start making more games to cash in on old glory. You can expect some form of WarCraft lore to still be around for the rest of our lives, just like Star Wars.
  10. Currently? ZorinOS Core, on my work laptop. I also browse it from Windows 10 (main computer), Linux Mint Mate (personal laptop), and Android (phone).
  11. Certainly not printing money out of thin air. The entire "need to mine crypto instead of simply having a certain amount of it in circulation as you would with real money" is supposed to create security (at least that's what google gives as the reason for it), but to me it just seems like a system for creating artificial scarcity and artificially slowing down crypto inflation. It's just one of the many bizzare things that make the fact crypto managed to take off as well as it did so strange to me.
  12. Even after all these years, I still have no idea what's actually the purpose of cryptocurrency for the average person. Like, why would I ever use a cryptocurrency instead of regular money? It just seems to me like a way for criminals to secretly exchange money. It's also completely baffling to me how any system where people are literally "mining" cash, ie. just pulling money out of their asses, can be sustainable or lead to anything good in the long run. A cryptominer contributes nothing - no service or product that may be beneficial to someone else - yet at the same time expends large amounts of energy by running mining rigs.
  13. Also, I'd like to add that video advertisements are one of the worst ways to make money. Ads waste the viewer's time, eat their bandwith, break the rhythm of the video, can carry viruses or malware, and are just plain annoying. Using an adblocker is therefore a necessity to ensure a comfortable browsing experience. And since adblockers are perfectly legal, they absolutely can't be seen as piracy in any way.
  14. There's no such thing as a life without adblock. You're not pirating anything when you use adblock. Piracy implies that something is unlawfully copied and/or stolen. Adblock has nothing to do with this.
  15. As far as I can tell, Being the owner of a NFT is like having a golddigger wife that gets railed by everyone, and thinking yourself lucky because you have the marriage certificate. Seriously though, I'm pretty sure NFTs are a form money laundering, or just people looking to get some money off of a fad before the sheep wake up. The only thing that surprises me is that huge corporations like Twitter seem to think NFTs are legit. I wonder what their endgame is.
  16. If you hate both Windows 10 and modern consoles, wait for Steam Deck to come out and get that. It's going to be Linux-based so telemetry is probably going to be minimal and you'll be able to use it similarly to the handheld gaming systems of old. You'll even be able to plug it into a monitor or TV and play games that way.
  17. Probably CSGO. All of my friends play it so it would be a good way to socialize + with a 1000 years of practice I may finally be able to get out of faceit rank 1.
  18. I'm guessing your target audience is mostly going to be interested in browsing the web, listening to music on spotify/youtube, watching netflix, etc. In that case, I'd just install Neverware Cloudready on the PCs. This is an open source version of ChromeOS, with all the same limitations and the same simplistic and modern-looking design. You can't find a simpler OS for a beginner than that, and it's really fast too.
  19. I have no idea who this card is for. If you want to play AAA games, you're not going to buy this. If you just need a display output, you're not going to buy this either. If all you play are super resource-efficient esport titles like CSGO, Valorant, LoL, DotA, etc., then you could probably make do with an used older card or even just AMD integrated graphics.
  20. I'm actually glad that Microsoft bought Activision-Blizzard. Now there's at least some hope that Blizzard may get back on track and redeem themselves. At this point, anything is better than just letting them stay a part of Activision. However, since it seems Bobby Kotick is still going to be the CEO, I doubt this is going to happen.
  21. They're different mediums with different storytelling needs. For example, a game like Doom is literally impossible to translate into a decent movie becasue what makes Doom great as a video game simply wouldn't work in a movie without major changes, at which point it would no longer be Doom. Same goes for Hitman, Super Mario, and other games that focus primarily on gameplay. On the other hand, games like Uncharted, Last of Us, Tomb Raider, God of War 4, etc. would all easily translate into a movie because their developers have a hard-on for Hollywood and are basically making an interactive movie anyway. The problem is that most of these games were heavily inspired by classic Hollywood films (eg. Uncharted & Tomb Raider = Indiana Jones) so their stories would make for very cliched films, which is why the directors attempt to change things a lot, which rarely ends well.
  22. AnyDesk works really well for me and is available for all platforms. It's also free for personal use.
  23. My Toshiba Satellite laptop is about 12 years old. Still does what I need it to do. My classic Blackwidow Ultimate is about 10 years old now, I think. A few of the switches are acting up a bit and doing duplicate presses, but aside from that occasional inconvenience it's still perfectly fine. On my secondary computer, I have some hard drives and two VGA 1680x1050 monitors that are at least 15-16 years old. The same computer uses contains some ancient Nvidia card that has one of those small, ancient coolers that were basically just a little piece of metal around a fan. No idea how old that thing is, but it's a lot.
