I'm going to apologize for the rudeness of some of the posters here. They were unnecessarily aggressive towards you. LTT Forums is about inclusiveness and generating a positive community atmosphere.

With that in mind, you did break the news guidelines. I know it can be daunting when making your first news post, but the general idea is fairly simple. Link to the source, quote a section of it to give a general feel of the article, then just post your thoughts.

Posting your thoughts is easy. What did you think about the article? Obviously it made some impression on you, since you wanted to share. It could be as simple as "I personally think this domain craze is stupid and a waste of time" or whatever. Doesn't have to be a PhD thesis. I hope this helps

WhatTheQuack reacted to itachipirate in Is Adblock internet piracy?
A lot of people use some kind of Ad blocking software on their web browsers to block annoying ads. But shouldn't blocking Ads be consider pirating content?

When a game developer makes a game, time and money goes into making original content that they expect to make profit off of. When somebody pirates a game, they receive the content the developer created without the developer making any money

When a website developer makes a website, they make money off of selling ad space. Their goal may be to make profit off of just the ads, or just to hope that their ad revenue will be enough to pay for server hosting and other expenses. When somebody visits a page with adblock, they receive the content of the website without the developer making any money

What is the bad part about internet piracy? That you don't have to pay, or that the content creator is not making money off of their work?

It's illegal to download paid music, games, and movies and piracy is often compared to stealing. The big problem is that somebody worked hard to create something, released it with the intention of making some amount of money in return for the content they created, and people are receiving this content without the creator making money. But still Adblock isn't considered piracy, and is even allowed by Google and Mozilla?

But isn't Adblock be worse than piracy? Pirating content that costs money is one thing, but to deny money to content creators that were actually providing you with their content with no cost to you? You don't even have to pay. They will make money even if you ignore the advertisements on their websites

Who'd a thunk it, other people don't just knee jerk hate on Apple products!

The Macbook of now is the Macbook Air of back then. It made little sense for normal people. Now look at the air, the cheapest point of entry to the Apple ecosystem and a pretty good entry to boot, a laptop that basically kicked every other PC maker in the ass on how to make a good, small laptop.

Its Apple first gen, every gen. Don't buy into it unless you really know what you want and are getting into. Otherwise wait for the vastly improved 2nd gen, when shits been ironed out and things make a little more sense.

Instead of saying "WTF" and figuring out a way to bash Apple about this, can we just take a moment and be proud that technology has done something meaningful for science and moved the field forward?

    Can we try that?

And just so we're clear, I would like to stress just how incredible this is. You know what it usually takes to get this many participants in a study? 5-8 years at least. Sometimes even more. The last study I worked on required FIVE years just to get 2500 patients.

So this is amazing. I hope more brands and institutions get into this and make use of it. I'm tired of people seeing Apple and just proceeding to shitposting. Read up on this, get involved. Do some good instead of just sitting on your asses mashing away at your keyboards.

So Windows itself only had 36 vulnerabilities, yet "IE had 242 vulnerabilities, compared to 124 in Chrome, and 117 in Firefox."

Even though the OS might have fewer vulnerabilities, its browser, and other 3rd part software has more vulnerabilities, if you plan on installing NO software on your windows PC, its safer, but once you start downloading programs and running 3rd party stuff, then its irrelevant

WhatTheQuack reacted to KemoKa in Could somebody enlighten me why Alienware is shunned upon?
Apple for the most part isn't aimed at hardcore programmers and workstation users (because even they know that a similarly-priced workstation PC will absolutely tear theirs inside out when it comes down to it). Apple makes computers for users who aren't that into computers, but want to own one that is easy-to-use, simple, and good-looking. And Apple computers are certainly very well-built, and pretty reliable if you take care of them. The hardware isn't top-of-the line, of course it isn't, the boards are made by Foxconn, but they're not bottom-of-the-barrel components, either. Of course, in terms of raw power, they're not good, like, at all, they make people like us cringe at how they would fare against a similarly-priced PC, but again, that's not what Apple computers are about. They do well at what they're used for, which is generally content consumption rather than content creation or alteration. or gaming, for that matter. While I wouldn't approach them for any reason other than to watch my dad nerd out, I do understand and appreciate Apple's value in the PC market in general (and yes, they are PCs, because PC stands for Personal Computer. basic terminology, here.) I also think they look really nice. Not in my personal tastes, you understand, but they are objectively very good-looking.

I really hope that you've at least used an apple computer before you dismissed them all as crap, because while from a PCMR, raw-power standpoint, I would wholeheartedly agree with you, as a person who likes good, informed, scientific discussions, and also as someone who grew up using both PCs and Apple computers... No. You need to back up your claims. Dude.

WhatTheQuack got a reaction from bcredeur97 in This company claim its cable could charge your phone 2x faster ( SONICable)
I think can believe these claims, here's why:
Some devices, specifically Apple iPhones and iPads (I assume other devices do this too) use the USB data lines to determine what the device is connected to via a series of resistors in the charging circuit at the other end. This is the bit that I don't fully understand, somehow the device uses these resistors to determine how much current it is allowed to draw from the charger, and this determines the charging speed.
So this cable, I guess, has a different resistor configuration which the device reads as it being allowed to draw more current than usual, so it charges faster.

I leaned this because as part of my AS Product Design course, I am making a table which will be able to charge USB devices, and apparently it isn't as easy as just hooking up a 5V supply to the USB ports...

Yes, yes they did. Because Comcast actually harms the industry and country they operate in. Ubisoft just releases bad games.
Then again, people around here have a poor sense of perspective on these things and think gaming is the centre of every universe.

WhatTheQuack got a reaction from W-L in Charging with 5V USB
I thought of an alternative idea, which would be to just use a 12v PSU for the LEDs, and use a cheap usb car charger to adapt the 12v supply to a USB charging port. That way I won't need to mess around with mains voltage wiring to get 2 PSUs running on one wall plug.

That would probably be the best thing so there is no possibility of ruining the battery on the iPad, just be sure to have a 12V switching PSU for the LED's to ensure their lifetime and not burn them out prematurely.

Anything public is okay, but when they start sniffing around in your computer remotely with no reason or suspicion of criminal activity crosses the line.

But it would be nice if their performance CPUs had a different forté to that of an i3. And as much as people like to bring up their effectiveness for YouTubers, how many of us does that honestly apply to?

WhatTheQuack reacted to Victorious Secret in Apple to increase App Store prices in Europe and Canada tomorrow morning
Ladies and gentlemen, look here: a person who doesn't understand the markets and why currency fluctuation can increase and decrease prices!
Guess what? Canadians often cried for prices to match what the exchange rate was, cause often the rate would dictate the prices but when the rate changed the prices wouldn't. Guess what? THAT WORKS BOTH WAYS!
When the rate favours Canada, low prices. When it doesn't, higher prices. You can't have it only one way. Apple isn't some fucking devil who is unique in doing this. Every single company that does business has already or will adjust their pricing soon. Canadians already take it up the rear in game prices (well before this drop in Canadian currency I might add)
To add to your list of companies that can go fuck themselves: Fitbit, Steam, every car marker, book publishers; pretty much every goods and service company there is.

I think ARA will take time to develop, I think jumping in early will be a mistake, it will take time for modules to be developed and for traction to gain behind the idea

Honestly I would upgrade your phone now, the iPhone 4 is pretty terrible when compared with new phones you will find it a night and day experiance, either going for an iPhone 6 or a high end android handset (or windows)
I think it will take at least 1 to 2 years until we see if the concept works

I love the idea of ara, it's definitely the right way for the mobile market to move, however I'm skeptical if it will work initially, the amount of issues early models will have will probably be ridiculous, so I'd rather wait for the second or third generation of it before I jumped on getting one.

I am of divided option, I love the concept, but ... will it really revolutionise the mobile space? for it to work it means there should only be ONE modular platform or that its interface method should be standardised

Also the base platform should not be updated in the future rendering old parts incompatible (which could happen)

    I am on the fence
