Depends how you travel.  Air?  Car?

I put monitors on the backseat floor in my car when traveling.  So what you have in your pic is fine.

For air, use the box it came in.

    SSD uses NAND

Like Dedayog said, even as a boot drive pro level or even a PCIE GEN 4 NVME pretty much only miliseconds faster than GEN 3. Tried both, I needed a stopwatch to actually measure it.

My suggestion is to just get a decent enough NVME with DRAM. Unless the price is not that much different.
Most warranty period is the same IIRC, 5 years. Only the TBW (write endurance) differs, but yeah... I doubt your daughter will ever reach it.
Example : Crucial P5 Plus 2TB's endurance is 1,200 Terrabytes, with 5y warranty, if we take let's say a 150GB game as example, your daughter will need to transfer in around 8000 games of that size.

For transferring small files the high end will perform pretty much almost the same like lower end, their high speed only shine when they are transferring big arse file.

My laptop uses P5 plus as boot drive, my desktop uses S70 blade as boot drive.
    P5 plus speed is 6600/5000 , S70 Blade speed is 7400/6400
Both perform pretty much the same.
Before going S70 on the desktop, it used ADATA SX8200 Pro, which was 3500/3000 , Yep.. needed a stopwatch to measure the difference.
If i want to go back even longer, before SX8200 it used a Patriot P210 (budget 2.5" non DRAM SATA SSD), the difference in boot time was merely 1-3 seconds max.

Also, just as PSA, M.2 is a form factor, while NVME and SATA are protocol.
There is an M.2 SATA SSD.
So to avoid confusion in the future, probably best to familiarize yourself by referring NVME as NVME instead of M.2.
Not trying to be an arse about it, just ... you know... don't want ya to someday walk into a pc store, say you want 1tb M.2 and the stupid employee gives ya an M.2 SATA SSD

Crucial P3 Plus or any of the other Gen 4x4.

No need to spend Pro money on a secondary drive, especially when you were using a shit HDD as secondary for the longest time.  Don't sell the Corolla and get a Ferrari.

There is no real world benefit to gamers for expensive PRO level drives.

Fans are like $5 or less.  Get two.

But yes, it may be enough to just have the side panel off and the CPU cooler and GPU fans may be enough.  Won't hurt anything, try it.

I think you're overthinking.  Unless you do productivity for work/income, the 8c/16t 7800X3D is more than enough.  Especially if you're coming from a 3770k.

The 7900 is an off CPU, as it isn't quite the 7950X and is only slightly better than the 7800X3D/7700X for productivity.

It's more than enough for casual editing, even for a Youtube channel owner.  If you NEED a 7900X/7950X, you'd know.

try the microcenter 7800x3d or 7700x bundle, everything else seems fine, it will pair ok for a 3070 but it can take a 4090 so you have a clear upgrade path for gpu

They're both 4x4, so theoretically they should be damn similar.  Real World booting?  Couldn't tell if your life depended on it.

If they're the same price, get the 1TB for capacity.

Both are already actually in the machine, the 500gb running through the chipset and the 1tb running through the CPU. The 1tb also has better latency and IOPS, both are similar on the read/write front, the sn850 being faster for smaller due to the higher max R/W but for larger files the (disregarding size) P5 Plus edging out the SN850 i believe due to stronger sustained R/Ws but thats at the 15+ minute mark i think, The P5 Plus also having DRAM and the sn850 not having it was another consideration. Im leaning toward the SN850 due to higher size headroom, cpu vs chipset position and the fact i dont transfer a ton of huge files that will take 15+ mins, and the DRAM should be somewhat irrelevant for my use case.

My SN850 is the one with an integrated heatsink and i have plenty of airflow through my case so shouldnt be too big an issue, also own and have both in my pc atm anyway (see above)

@Agall I see, the diagram definitely helped.  Based on @Tetras's response and the diagram, a swap seems like unnecessary effort so might just plug 990 into M2B. Thank you guys!!

It really wont provide any benefit, youll more than likely need to change motherboards again before being able to make use of them, id recommend getting gen 5 on your next motherboard upgrade, or maybe even the one after that, but right now theyre a largely redundant technology as we havent caught up to them in the other formats that matter, GPU etc

Yes, the 5600 is CL28, 6000 is CL30, 6400 is CL32, etc.  CL should be 1/2 the speed for DDR5. in general.  Disregarding the Zero's.

    @filpo loves his 5600CL28's.

6000 CL30's have got my heart now 😄
cl28 is only like $10 more

stability for am5 might be worse with 28 though, that's why we all spec 6000 CL30s

Dedayog reacted to SpookyCitrus in SSD heat spreader pad or motherboard heatsink
Nvme SSDs are designed to work without a heat spreader, so either one is going to work. Typically you will need to remove the preinstalled one in order to use the motherboards built in. Usually the built in MB ones are better. Personally, I order Nvmes without the heat spreader or if the heat spreader version is cheaper I remove it and use the motherboard's if it has one.

Usually you order the with or without versions based on if your motherboard has one or not. In this instance where your board has one already, you'd want to get an Nvme that doesn't already have a heat spreader. Regardless, even if it didn't come with one or the motherboard didn't have one you'd still be fine.

Devil's Advocate is a solid play here, but a 4070 Super for 1080p, especially going from the iGPU in a 5600g.... a bit much.

So no, I am staying strong and saying a 4070 Super is overkill for 1080p.  There are a myriad of sub-$800 GPU's more suited.

I understand your point and it's a vague one.  You're just hedging on a "what might happen in the future", may as well get a 4090 then.
