Proxmox does containers, not just VMs: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Linux_Container. I'd just use that unless you prefer manually setting up the OS for your purposes.

Yea that hardware will be more than plenty here.

Really depends on what you want to do here. Both docker or proxmox + containers/vms will work fine here and run these programs(Or just can just run them all on the base os with no docker/containers).

HW wise this should be more than enough. If you're using Docker the underlying OS is pretty irrelevant, go with what you like the most.

As per proxmox vs ubuntu/docker, I personally prefer to have my services as containers instead of full blown VMs.

One port is more than enough. DNS takes very little traffic, and filling 1gbe with torrents is rare(unless you got > 1gbe internet connection and a lot of disk io)

If you know docker already, I don't see a reason to use proxmox, just use the docker commands you know

Yes.  All 3 M.2 slots support PCIe 4x and the first 2 also support SATA.  The Pro can go into any of them.

My i7 8086k was at 5ghz all cores.

Compared to my 5800x and i9 10900k performance tanked on the i7 with the 3080 ti.

I would go with a 3070 ti or 3080 if you plan on keeping the i7 8700k for a while.

    Thank you everyone!

I think from the above advice I'll wait until later in the year and see what Nvidia brings out!

    Thanks again!

    At least RTX 3060ti.

RTX 3060 is a sidegrade with mostly the same performance but has newer features. I don't recommend 3060 though, it's not worth it from 1080ti.

I mean really nothing less than a 3080 will be that huge of an upgrade.

So a 1080ti is similar to a 3060\3060ti, if you are looking to upgrade as you need more FPS or want ray tracing you are probably going to want to go with a 3080 or higher at the least, otherwise it is probably not worth upgrading at all as the 1080ti is still a very capable GPU.

I would suggest you wait if you can as new cards this year are expected from AMD, Nvidia and even Intel.  Which means if you upgrade now, in 6 months there will be another generation out.

    This.
I'm also rocking a 1080Ti and, at this point, I just don't think it's worthwhile buying anything.
I'd rather wait until later this year when both AMD and nVidia are expected to announce and launch their new series of cards.

To quickly test for stability, 30 minutes is fine. However such a quick test should always be accompanied afterwards with a thorough stability test that takes longer.

If instabilities would occur, they will do so during those few hours. And even then you’re not 100% sure the system is stable. (Therefore real enthusiasts run such a test for a whole day.)
30 minutes is a too narrow time window for system errors to occur.

Air cooled, AIO, Custom loop cooling?

If its an air cooler only about 15 minutes should be enough, AIO give it 30 or so minutes(for a 120/140/240/280mm) and for a custom loop then it depends how many rads you've got.

I would say at least half an hour for a quick and dirty test. Otherwise several hours just to make sure the system is able to handle it.

However, Prime95 is a worst-case scenario test. You almost never will encounter something that will give it that bad of a load outside of it.

Gamersnexus had a roudup, and the Strix came out on top overall, with the Gaming X as a runner up. For watercooling, the Armor, because it's exactly the same as the Gaming X with a crappy cooler.

coil whine depends on luck (on getting a card without one, since every card can have this problem), overclockability depends mostly on luck once filtering the bad ones (which are few).

I'd call the FTW3 the best all-rounder. EVGA is the only company I know that accepts 'coil whine' as a reason for RMA so there's only 1 brand. The Hybrid cards are out of question because you want air cooling, Kingpin is bad because it's very expensive.

Choice between SC and FTW is much more difficult. I'd still prefer the FTW because it does have a higher power limit and better cooling than the SC without being overpriced.

The kingpin one is probably one of the best option if you want pure air. Sadly it's not available (and i don't think it ever will).
Or go hybrid, that's a good option as well.

You can run a Windows 10 OEM license, it's just that doing so would violate the license terms.

Yes the speed/bandwidth of an NVMe drive is 4 - 6 times better than a SATA III connection. But that extra bandwidth/speed only produces a noticeable difference under certain conditions. Most of the storage i/o in a system with the described usage will be small (4K) reasonably random blocks with cpu processing interspersed. Where the higher performance of an NVMe drive makes a difference is with long serial reads/writes and high i/o queue depths.

Personally I think the money is better spent getting a larger SATA III ssd as more faster storage improves overall performance.
