There are many bare metal hypervisors. Prxmox as suggested above, ESXI from VMware. XenServer, XCP-NG that is a new alternative to XenServer. KVM and alot more i've probably never heard of yet. Pick the one you like the most

They are right. A server is a concept. Not a standard, nor a machine type. In my opinion, at a minimum, a server is designed for 24/7 operation without interruption. It may have Error-Correcting Code Memory (RAM). It may be powered through a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). Or a generator. It can serve the needs of a whole country or a two-people business. It can have such redundancy, or none at all. Or very cool features such as remote access and remote Firmware configuration (iLO, IPMI, DRAC). It may be connected through fiber optic to a 100TB storage datacenter in another country. It may be searching for alien life or working against the clock to find an antidote for the SARS virus. It may run Irix 6.3 or Windows Server 2012. It is just there, listening to the queries. It serves a purpose.

NAS is simpler. NAS is redundant storage. Network-Attached Storage. Many computers can access it. It is used locally, it is usually not shared over the internet. It is designed for you or your (small) organization. It would probably be bad at handling numerous queries per second online, for example. You would need an Entreprise-grade SAN (Storage Area Network) for that. A NAS can be as simple as 2 hard drives replicated (RAID1, mirror), with a shared folder on your network. It could also be much more intricate, like iscsi netbooting other servers or diskless workstations for less client-side maintenance.

The reason Im using windows is because of Data de-duplication. Real killer for me, saves more than 2tb on media on my setup.
The reason I have it go from D:\Downloads to G:\Torrents. Is because the D drive is a Samsung Pro 120gb ssd (for the 10 year Warranty), its there so a torrent downloads to that then flushes to my 4tb raid. Downloading straight to the raid (while seeding ~300-400 torrents) cause utorrent to crash and the whole system coming to a hault. I think the is due to the nature of how torrents download and not playing nice with the super high activity times on the raid (before the ssd, there was a wait time of over 100 seconds for the HDD, SSD fixed this)

My laptop has 8gb ram, and I use that for watching videos, browsing the web, nothing intensive, the most I have seen myself use is 5.2gb ram. On my gaming rig I have 16gb, again, I use no more than about 9 or 10gb. My sisters laptop and my dads desktop both have 4gb, and they use around 2.5gb-3gb. All work fine, just get the amount you need. However my workplace, they have 2gb ram but use 4-5gb........ page files suck.

a guy told me that sending speaker audio over a phone line cable would make the audio come out garbled and really low quality.

the dude is an electronics engineer college student, deeply believes in the superiority of "perfect surface silver" audio cables being far superior than cables that can scientificly be tested to show they have lower resistance and less interference.

also, iOS has superior audio quality over android. let that sink in folks, an OS has superior audio quality.

So I live on an Island south of Australia called Tasmania. Tasmania is a fairly large island, taking about 3 hours to drive From Hobart (South of the state) to Launceston (North of the state). Tasmania is home to 520,000 people (1/40 of the population of Australia) as far as Tasmania is concerned we are just another state. A bit of background. There are only 3 undersea cables connecting Tasmania and the Main land (what Tassie's call the rest of Australia) 2 are owned by an ISP called Telstra and the the other is owned by Basslink (Basslink is not an ISP). All the ISP's in Australia use the Basslink fibre cable as its cheaper to use than Telstra's, and Telstra use there own lines. (Also to note that most of Australia internet is NOT owned by ISP, and is owned by the Government)

So I'm living here at home enjoying my 100mbit Fibre connection when I hear the new that Basslink is having problems (Basslink also carries Electricity between the Tasmania and the Main land) Now I get a little concerned an go buy a UPS for my server and router in case of power issues. Then on Friday they had to cut Basslink (power and Fibre) cap it and bring the surface to fix the power part of it. Now this is not a problem in itself as Basslink purchased bandwidth from Telstra to use for the next 2 months Except it wasnt enough

So Friday night, I go to watch some 1080p Youtube or Vessel, buffers, weird, lets try 720p....nope. oh it works at 360p! well that's not good enough, I can normally stream 4k! So I contact a few friends, some can get 75-100mbit and others (including myself) are only getting 1-2mbits. Im like Oh well maybe it will be fixed tomorrow morning, how how wrong I was....

So here its is Monday Midday and internet (for me) has not gotten any higher than around 5mbit. 200,000 People in Tasmania are not using Telstra and are using other ISP's, and go full on rage on facebook at iinet, internode and other isp's some showing speedtest's as slow as 0.02mbits! The internet in my state is basically cut off. for example, I wanted to watch the archive of the most recent wan show (and I apologise in advance Linus) I downloaded it instead of watching on youtube, It took 2 days to download in 720p, my laptop hasn't turned off since the cut. Now its not all bad, I can connect to my mates internet and we can play some games, as that traffic stays in the state, I still get 100mbit, except no one hosts web servers or cache servers in Tassie. So here I am basically stuck without internet along with the 200,000 people struggling to load images on the web. I forgot, without using a VPN you cannot do the following things:
Login into steam (or download games)
Cant download games in Origin (though a VPN it took 14 hours to download Need for speed, instead of 1 hour)
    No Microsoft updates
Video streaming services has been throttled
    Torrents have been throttled
Files downloaded from the web sometimes fail (kinda sucks waiting 3-4 hours to download 1gb and then failing 2.5 hours in)
and who knows what else (also to note, Internet in Australia is unfiltered and there is no traffic prioritisation, all traffic is equel.

iinet posted an update saying on Thursday that more bandwidth will be available and that they would contact all their Tasmanian customers, once basslink is fixed at the end of May, and will compensate for the loss of internet and apply credits to the accounts. I guess its not so bad I still get an upload speed of 35mbit (Max is 40mbit)

Below is a map of Australia and you can see the 3 links connecting to Tasmania
Now I can load LTT on my laptop since its fairly light weight, so if you have any questions ask below.

4MB/sec is about 32mbits. Wireless N is slow, I havent seen faster than 5MBs on wireless N, you best bet is to either use a ethernet connection or as you said a flash drive. an Ethernet connection will give you either 100mbit or 1gigabit/sec (10MBs to 100MBs). Either that or upgrade to wireless AC or AD

I didnt want to say this, but this is my backup solution, kinda. before you rage at me listen. the data i have i would prefer not to lose, however in the event that it does, that will suck, however i do keep backups of my important files in multiple areas. Another reason i want to raid, is i would rather my server not go down, as it hosts a 24/7 game server of mine, for me and a few friends. Also Im doing a Certificate IV in Business and ICT (Its an Australian thing, Basically I get paid to get a Qualification type thing but I get paid to do it, not that its very much) and i can apply this raid thing to my Units i have to do.

I read the link about raid 5 and did a bit of research, and as for the hassle with the card and what i have read (including the "write hole") I might settle for raid 10 as i only did have 4tb previously, i will just have to remember to delete old un-needed files. Also this was for my home server, not for a business, nothing that contains important files.

Just for future reference there is no point defragging an ssd. In the days (well we are still here so yeah) of HDD's it would physically move the data on one point of the disks inside to a new point to reduce loading times, so the header doesnt have to go to 5 different locations for the data, its all together, when i say physically move it, i mean on the magnetic platers, it does not effect your folder structure. however this irrelevant on ssd's as it does not matter physically where there data is, as there is no moving parts, so there is no waiting time for the "head" to get to the next chunk of data.
