So, I have a friend who is currently rocking a really cheap-o crappy headset, and is looking to buy a new one. He owns a Blue Yeti, but for some reason wants to get the Astro A40 headset. He says he is in a secluded environment, so I'm assuming open headphones would be best for him. In the $150 range, what open headphones would be good for him?

They look like they sound great and everything, but the open design and the actual looks of them make them not for me. Great review, though!

Note my post count, I've probably suggested headphones more times in this sub than you've posted on this forham in total.

If you think a "surround" headphone makes sense, you probably need to get educated.

You have $75 and you can't afford a $50 mic? How does that work?

You cannot get real surround sound with headphones, but open headphones are much better for positional tracking than closed headphones because of the design. Get a pair of Sennheiser HD 558's and an AntLion ModMic and run it off your onboard audio on your motherboard.

I agree with @lBubbleTea, get the Audio Technica Ad700x or something similar with a ModMic or Blue Snowball.

M50s dont need an extra amp, unless your onboard is broken.

There's a lot more variation in the mic input on motherboard than people seem to realize, and even within batches of ModMics. They haven't nailed down the manufacturing process yet, so there's been some variances. What is good about the modmic is the pretty great customer service. Their product(s) are continuously in development, so errors do occur, but generally they'll replace your modmic with a newer version if anything goes wrong with your old one.

Aint perfect, but it satisfies enough of a niche to be a good thing for consumers.

The Zalman Clip-on, again, will vary in performance depending on what you plug it into. It's cheap, it works, but there's only so much a clip-on can do. People with mechanical keyboards will find their friends ragging on them about it constantly. You can easily mod it to work similarly to a ModMic, but you won't be conveniently detaching it from a magnetic baseclamp.

I would actually recommend buying the DT770 Pro and a mic seperately, that way you can save some cash. From what i see the MMX 300 are 345$.

    192$ - DT770 Pro 32 Ohms: http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-770-PRO-32-Headphone-Monitoring-Applications/dp/B008POFOHM
    50$ - Microphone: http://www.modmic.com/products/modmic-4-0
Total:  242$ instead of 345..that's 103$ that stays in your pocket.

    What?

Anyway you won't want any headphones with "DJ" in them if you want a flat response. The T70's are baby T1's and they're SUPER flat so that probably isn't a bad choice. Just make sure you get a good amp.

Many/most of the posts the audio subforum gets are requests for what products to buy. After recommending them, we hardly ever hear from the owner. What product did we recommend for you that you now use? Do you like it? Photos?
